Some good tips for 2010

10 New Uses for Baking Soda

“Not only does baking soda neutralize odiferous fatty acids but it also attacks grease by turning it into―believe it or not―soap,” says the University of Pittsburgh’s Wolke. Fact: More than 100 tons of the refrigerator staple were used to clean the Statue of Liberty’s inner copper walls during its 1986 restoration.

Use Baking Soda to:
1. Exfoliate skin. Wash your face, then apply a soft paste made of three parts baking soda and one part water. Massage gently with a circular motion, avoiding the eye area; rinse clean.
2. Erase crayon, pencil, ink, and furniture scuffs from painted surfaces. Sprinkle soda on a damp sponge, rub clean, and rinse.
3. Unclog a drain. Pour 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, then slowly pour 1/2 to 1 cup of white vinegar after it. Let sit for five minutes (covered, if possible). Follow with a gallon of boiling water.
4. Remove tough stains from enameled cast iron and stainless steel. Scrub enameled cast iron with a soft nylon brush and a thick paste of baking soda and water. Clean stainless steel with a soft cloth and 4 tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in 1 quart of water. Wipe dry with a clean cloth.
5. Scrub pans. Sprinkle soda on crusted casseroles and roasting pans and let sit for five minutes. Lightly scrub and rinse.
6. Brush teeth. Use a paste of baking soda and water.
7. Fight class-B fires (flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, and grease). Baking soda can be used to smother only a small flame.
8. Deodorize. Dust baking soda under your arms to absorb body odor.
9. Clean up minor oil and grease spills on a garage floor or driveway. Sprinkle baking soda on the spot and scrub with a wet brush.
10. Settle a stomach during occasional indigestion. Stir 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into 1/2 cup of water and drink for a safe and effective antacid.

Sailing, Pure and Sometimes Simple
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2010-01-06
'Sailing, Pure and Sometimes Simple' is a potpourri look at the joys of sailing from four different viewpoints by people who are living their dreams. Chuck Knowles and Margi Schneider are a year round live aboard couple who regularly leave the daily routine of their Detroit jobs to explore the world from the water. “Skip” Gmeiner has enjoyed growing up on, sailing and maintaining a famous NY 32 classic yacht Apache that has been in his family, and at the DYC, since 1940. John Barbour’s local racing prowess is well known to many of us who have raced the bigger boats; he will share his Mackinac race experiences with us. And finally, Dawn Riley, a local woman who got her start on Lake St. Clair followed her dream to become the pioneering CEO and Captain of America True (America’s Cup Campaign) and one of the best-known sailors in the world. Join us to hear their stories at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on the evening of January 6, 2010 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm for the first seminar in this year’s outstanding series. 'Assignment Detroit' and the Culture of Innovation
Inforum- A Professional Women's Alliance

FRI 2010-01-15

Inforum Special Event:

Time Inc. Chairman and CEO to Talk Innovation at Inforum Luncheon on Jan. 15 DETROIT // On Jan. 15, Time Inc.'s Chairman and CEO Ann Moore will be in Detroit to talk about the media giant's ground-breaking Assignment Detroit project and how it fits into building a culture of innovation at Time Inc. Moore will speak at a luncheon hosted by Inforum, Michigan's largest and most prestigious business forum for women, starting at 11:30 a.m., at the Detroit Marriott. Time Inc. made waves locally and nationally when it purchased a home in Detroit and announced plans to spend an entire year getting to know the city better. Moore says the project is part of Time Inc.'s strategy for altering the landscape of the publishing world with new technology, novel approaches and fresh thinking. "Like the state of Michigan, Time Inc (and the entire publishing industry) is going through a dramatic transformation," Moore said. "Just as Time Inc has diversified beyond print-based content, Michigan now has to diversify beyond reliance on auto manufacturing. In that kind of environment, bold innovations (like our Assignment Detroit project) are the key to moving forward." Inforum CEO Terry Barclay says Moore's vision fits perfectly with the message of reinvention and renewal, which has been the main theme of Inforum's 2009-2010 events. "When it comes to getting out of a crisis, sticking to the script and doing what's expected usually is not a good strategy," Barclay said. "When the world changes around them, the most successful leaders show imagination, exhibit courage and take calculated risks when others are inclined to play safe. Our goal this year has been to point people in that direction. For that reason, we're thrilled to be hosting Ann Moore." Tickets to the luncheon are available now. The cost is $50 for Inforum members or $65 for nonmembers. For reservations visit the calendar at www.inforummichigan.org or call 313.578.3230. About Inforum Inforum is one of the largest and most prestigious business forums for women in the nation, with more than 1,800 members from a broad cross-section of Michigan's business community. The mission of the organization is to strengthen the business environment by creating opportunities for women to lead and succeed. Founded as the Women's Economic Club in 1962 in Detroit, Inforum has affiliates in Grand Rapids and Lansing, Michigan. For more information, visit www.inforummichigan.org or call 877.633.3500. About Time Inc. Time Inc., a Time Warner company, is one of the largest content companies in the world. With a portfolio of 21 U.S. magazines and more than 25 U.S. Web sites, including some of the world's most popular, powerful and trusted brands, it is the largest magazine publisher in the U.S., and a leading publisher in the U.K. and Mexico. Time Inc.'s popular brands and successful franchises extend to online, television, cable VOD, satellite radio, mobile devices, events and branded products. Each month, one out of every two American adults reads a Time Inc. magazine, and one out of every seven who are online visits a company Web site.
Starts at 11:30 AM. Member Price is $50 and guest price is $65.Location: Detroit Marriott - Renaissance Center. Detroit, MI 48243 (313) 568-8146 .
