Boy's Story

This summer "Boy" was living from porch to porch in Detroit when a social worker, who also volunteers for the animal rescue PAAW, made a call on the house where he was staying that day. When she opened her car door to leave Boy jumped in and gave her a "please save me" look. He was deathly sick with parasites, bacterial Sharon and Boypneumonia, kennel cough, malnourished and 20 lbs. underweight. The rescue did not know the severity of his illnesses and brought him to me to "teach him some commands." I discovered he was deaf with impaired vision. The only name he recognized was "Boy."  He was terrified of being touched or petted. We began making him physically and emotionally healthy.

For the first time in his life Boy was loved and safe. He soon returned each speck of love with a mountain of it back. He has his first toys and still acts like a puppy with them (he probably missed a proper puppyhood). He has become a "velcro dog" of attention and affection to me.

Boy's manners and house behavior had already been trained so I tried hard to find him a permanent home while we were clearing up residual health problems. Then came a new vet and new news: Boy was unadoptable. He has two severe heart conditions, kidney failure and the worst arthritis in his elbow the vet had ever seen. The arthritis is also in his hips and spine. Medication for the kidneys hurts his heart and meds for the heart are hard on his kidneys. The vet gave him six months.

The people at PAAW and I decided to keep him as comfortable as possible (he only feels pain from arthritis) and provide him the happiest months of his life. So here he is and here I am: nesting with a dog who is my size! Boy is a survivor (including being a Houdini at escaping from a double fenced-in garden and yard to search the neighborhood for me and then returning over three fences and getting back in the house waiting like an angel for me to come home!) Survivor that he is, his survival chances just might beat the medical odds. But with each month God gives me joy in the privilege of giving one of His creatures the love and respect he deserves and showing him life is good. He in turn makes my life "good-er."

If you want a new furry family member, please think of Boy and the millions of other wonderful animals needing rescued and a life of safety. They "know" you saved them. You will be richer by far for doing so.

Signed, Boy's Foster Mom

PAAW has many dogs and cats available for immediate adoption.  PAAW is a "no kill" rescue committed to quality life for animals.  PAAW is especially in need of volunteer foster homes.  If you would like to help or view animals available for adoption see:

The SS Columbia, one of two boats that carried visitors to Boblo Island, is undergoing a $10-million restoration project. The 108-year-old ship is to become a floating educational tool in New York.

The Ste Clair is also being worked on but will hopefully stay in the Detroit area.

Amazon Promise? photos from the Upper Amazon Basin of Peru
Art Show

This event spans the period from 2011-01-04 to 2011-02-06

Amazon Promise… photos from the Upper Amazon Basin of Peru

For Royal Oak native, Patty Webster, a trip through the Amazon is no longer a casual adventure. Since 1993, Patty has been coordinating medical relief programs designed at assisting native people with health care that currently is not being supplied by NGOs. Amazon Promise, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that she founded and is president, has grown to provide medical and dental care to this underserved population across a network of villages in the Amazon Basin. Each year, health care workers (some from University of Michigan) and non-medical volunteers join with the Peruvian medical team to administer shots, wound care and surgeries and to date have provided care to over 55,000 people.

In 2008, it was decided to extend this program to the residents of Belen, Peru where no government medical care is provided and is desperately needed. Working with Engineers Without Borders (NY Chapter), a temporary structure was completed and a new clinic is in the fundraising and planning stages.

Photographs from Patty's frequent expeditions into the rainforest will be displayed and for sale in the restaurant. A special event night with videos from CNN Hero's of the Week and another by Jacques Cousteau's granddaughter Celine, who paid a visit, will be shown. Patty will be available for questions and all donations from the sale of pictures and all monetary donations will benefit Amazon Promise.

Visit: www.AmazonPromise.org for more details and how you can help out directly by joining an expedition.

Visit: http://belen.ewbny.org/ for more information regarding construction of the health clinic in Belen, Peru.

Each January, Inn Season selects a charity to sponsor and help provide fundraising opportunities. Amazon Promise, founded by Royal Oak native Patty Webster, and who's sister Susan was a former restaurant employee, regularly stops by when home visiting family. We are proud of the work by Patty, her staff and volunteers.

The first in the Chamber Night Out series is a trip to Painting With a Twist (PWAT), where members will be given step-by-step instructions for creating their own work of art.  There is a two hour class that also includes beverages and appetizers, plus plenty of time to take breaks and get to know each other better. Everyone will be given a quality canvass and all the supplies they need to make their masterpiece.  Each class offered at PWAT features a different work of art.  For the Chamber Night Out it will be "Red Landscape," although artists are welcome to deviate from the color scheme if they would like.
