Patricia Hill Burnett passes away at 94

I've known Patricia since the middle 70's when the Peggy Jo Studio first photographed her for the Detroit Magazine. Over the past several years, we became special friends while again photographing her and assisting her with her extensive Holiday Card mailings. She was one of my Send Out Cards customers and I was able to use their tools to create beautiful Christmas Cards. Patricia had a wonderful sense of humor and it was always delightful to be around her and photograph her. To know her was to love her---Patricia, you will be certainly missed.

One of her memorable quotes:

Never say No, except when someone asks You "Do you have enough?"

Visitation:

Visitation will be at Desmond Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Avenue Royal Oak, MI (248) 549-0500, from 5:00 PM till 8:30 PM on Monday January 12, 2015.

Obituary

PATRICIA HILL BURNETT, artist and feminist, whose long and ever-surprising path took her from noted beauty and socialite to founding feminist, died peacefully at home on December 29th after seizing the day for 94 years.

Born in Brooklyn, she grew up in Washington, D.C., and Toledo, Ohio before accompanying her mother, Mimi Uline Hill, to Detroit. Educated at Goucher College, she moved from local modeling to winning Miss Congeniality and runner-up in the1942 Miss America Contest, and from there to prominent voice roles on WXYZ's The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet.

During this time, she gradually built her career as a painter and sculptor. Her first commissioned portrait was at age 14. She went on to paint Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, Joyce Carol Oates, Corazon Aquino, and too many Michigan politicians, business personalities, and social celebrities to list. Her 2008 portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsberg hangs in the National Bar Association in Manhattan, that of Betty Ford at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor, and she was at work on a large-scale floral painting until her sudden illness last week.

In the early 1960s, her life took an unexpected turn towards feminism. Working with Betty Friedan, she co-founded the Michigan chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), and later served on its National Board, chaired its International Board, and chaired the Michigan's Women's Commission before being appointed the Chair of the National Association of Women's Commissions by President Carter. She convened the first International Women's Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1973, then traveled around the world promoting women's rights through the 1970s and 1980s. For more than five decades, from the local podium to national media, she merged her commitment to women's rights with her Republican Party affiliation as skillfully as her careers in art and public service.

Her book True Colors chronicled her unconventional life, her extremely sociable nature and the spontaneous joy she took in creating change.

She was honored with a doctorate from the College for Creative Studies in 2009 for her lifetime contribution to the arts community of Detroit. Other recent recognitions include the Wonder Woman Award in 2013, "Salute America" and "Women Who Made a Difference" from the International Women's Forum, both in 2006, and the Michigan Women's Foundation's "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2001. Her papers relating to her career as a feminist are archived at the Bentley Library at the University of Michigan.

After a brief marriage to William Lange, she enjoyed long marriages to Harry Albert Burnett, Jr. and Robert Siler. She leaves William Hill Lange, Harry A. Burnett III, Terrill Hill Burnett, Hillary Hill Burnett and grandchildren Honora, Delia and Liliana Burnett, Blaize and Aiden Wallace, and Thea, Marina and Remy Mayaud. The world is richer with opportunity for women, more beautiful and more interesting for having had her in it.

Visitation is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Jan. 12 at A.J. Desmond & Sons, 32515 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak. - See more at: http://www.desmondfuneralhome.com/obituary/Patricia-Hill-Burnett/_/1466083#sthash.ilv2JYr1.dpuf

From our readers

Dear Peggy Jo,
Thank you for publicizing my book Her Sacrifice it took many years for me to complete. Now, with Amazon, it is in circulation. I would like the people that downloaded the book during last week's sale to take the time to fill out the review form so that I can see what the general public thinks of my book because I am in the process of writing another.

In addition, I have reduced the price of the book to $4.99 efectively immediately and in anticipation of the new season of "Downton Abbey". The events in my book take place in roughly the same time period.

yours truly,
Francine LeGrove.
Dear Peggy Jo,
Subject: A little humor is always good
  1. I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people. I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out.
  2. I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People move out of the way much faster now.
  3. You can tell a lot about a woman's mood just by her hands. If they are holding a gun, she's probably angry.
  4. Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers.
  5. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That's common sense leaving your body.
  6. I don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom.
  7. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row,
  8. And so I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
  9. Dear paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers: If you find one, what's your plan?
  10. Everyone has a right to be stupid. Some just abuse the privilege.

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord's glory, as the waters cover the sea."

DRYA Winter Seminar #2
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2015-01-14
APPLYING FOR A DRYA PHRF RATING, REVIEW AND APPEAL OF A HANDICAP:David Spiers, DRYA Chief Handicapper

The goal of any yacht racing rating system is to level the playing field for often disparate vessels. Dave will discuss the forms and other necessary items to complete this very important first step toward obtaining a fair rating and where to get this information if you don't possess it. Questions are welcome! Dave is a retired Manager of Engineering for DTE Energy. He has been involved in Handicapping in DRYA for over 20 years, rising to his current position several years ago.

BEHIND THE SCENES; RUNNING THE MACKINAC RACE: Art LeVasseur & Carl Bihlmeyer

Art LeVasseur is an Old Goat, having raced in 31 Mackinac Races. He has served on the Mackinac Race Committee in various capacities since 1993, including serving as the 2014 Race Chairman. Carl Bihlmeyer is also an Old Goat, having raced in 26 Mackinac Races. He has served 13 years on the Mackinac Race Committee. His biggest thrill was serving as the 2013 Mackinac Race Chairman.

Art & Carl will talk about the people/operational side of things and the cost side. The money raised by entry fees, which averages about $500 per boat, is allocated to various race expenses, but much more is needed. Additional income comes from race merchandise sales and sponsorship. Without them, the entry fee would have to be doubled just to break even. Aside from money, BYC could not sponsor this race without the many, many hours of time invested by its volunteers, some of whom have been participating for many years.

Bayview Yacht Club and Grosse Pointe Yacht Club will both be open for dinner this evening for attendees. Please see the times, phone numbers and addresses listed elsewhere.
From 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.. Location: Grosse Pointe Sail Club: Tompkins Community Center, Grosse (Windmill) Pointe Park, 14920 Windmill Pointe Drive, Grosse Pointe, MI 482230
