Miraculous News

Re: Jan Bissell who we asked you to pray for in the 12/04/2006 issue of the PJSN

The report we received is her bloodwork was sent to California for "blood markers" that took about ten days. They came back negative! This means that her lung cancer is treatable. She will receive a recently approved drug by the FDA and remission is expected within 3 - 4 months. She will not have to have chemotherapy.

From our readers

Hi Peggy Jo!
How is your "Keep the lights on" drive going? It's a great idea---It will make a difference----and it will ameliorate the dull, grey spells of winter in Michigan! Take care. Rand M.
I have put up hearts up for Valentines' day. I left my lights up as Valentine lights. I am a party animal. hope to see you soon. maybe at the Valentine party.

Dear Peggy Jo
Who was that "scrooge" that said we wanted only the events? Keep up the good work and don't listen to the "Nay Sayers". I for one appreciate your eclectic approach to life.
Ralph L.
Subject: Hats --- Hats ---Hats. I stood across the room looking at the people entering the room to attend the Sailing Singles Dance. And then BAM a striking lovely young lady waked in. She stood out among the other people attending. There was something different about her. ---She wore a hat --- Was she an "old fashioned girl". I knew I had to know more about her. As she turned and raised her head after signing in I saw the mystery woman under that hat. Her eyes were big and bright and she had a lovely smile. I knew I had to meet that young lady bringing back that "old fashioned trend".You are looking Great Peggy Jo

I hesitated in publishing this e-mail for fear people would think I have "Big Head" to hold my hat up and not just for the hat but then I also felt that most of the compliment was directed to my hat. "Hello, Do You from the children's book Go, Dog Go " Thank you.

My Christmas, Not so Merry
by Diane
Dear Peggy Jo,
I last wrote you at 2:46 Christmas D--- the day has taken a turn. Now itís 4:05. I have packed up the sleigh with dinner goodies and called Mom to say I was heading out, no answer. Called the neighbor across the street, no sight of Mom for a few days. She interrupts her Christmas dinner to go over. Canít get in the house --- dead bolt on "uncommon"--- she goes home to get a ladder to see in the window --- Mom is lying on the floor of her bedroom.
She is breathing---Maria calls 911 for EMS and the police! She calls me, Iím on my way. I get to Mom's house, but she has already been transported to the hospital.
What happened:
Momís back door bell rang about 8:30 pm Saturday night. She was in bed, I was not feeling well (so I wasnít there). My son Dr. Randall ("Rande") and Nicole with new baby Preston, a month old, and my grandson Gray, 3 Ĺ, had left about 8:00 pm to head back to Ohio. ---Mom canít walk over 20ft and cannot get to the door. The door is kicked in and this big person confronts my 92 year old mom with a flash light in her face and tells her he is there to rob her and wants her money. She tells him she has no money so he hits her and roughs her up, we donít know exactly what happened. She is bruised all over, her shoulders, face, back, ribs, chest, thighs, hips, legs, arms. He shoved her body under the bed where she was wedged for two days. She was unable to get up off the floor. While under the bed she had a heart attack - the doctors could tell because her heart enzymes were significantly elevated. Today her chemistry is getting closer to normal ranges, but she can barely move, she hurts so bad. I am so sad.
So thatís my Christmas story --- others in the hospital were not so lucky.
My dear friends please keep my sweet mom and me in your prayers.
Diane

TO PJSN READERS:
I spoke to Diane over this past weekend and she tells me her Mom is doing a little better and will soon need a facility where she can receive 24 hour care that is affordable. Sheíd like to look into adult foster care. Anyone with knowledge in that area please forward it to us.

Also, this unfortunate story brings on thoughts we should all be thinking about----people who live alone. Age doesnít factor in this. This story reminds me of too many lives that could have been saved had a daily contact been established. Oftentimes elderly people donít know how to use those 1st Alert things...and for sure you wonít get a young person to wear one unless there is a known medical problem.

So my friends, get that family member or buddy in place and encourage them to check in every day for safety reasons!
We are starting to compile the "Keep the lights up Campaign" data and placing it on a web page so that we can start the campaign sooner next year

Sign Your Car Registration, Or Pay $125

The email below is making the rounds, may be overstated.
According to the Royal Oak Police Department, failing to sign your registration is an offense that can be ticketed but it is up to the court to assess the fine. So it is better to be safe than sorry.

Make sure your car registration has been signed on the back to avoid paying a $125 fine if you're ever pulled over for anything. New legislation in Michigan.

At the Secretary of States office the customer service representative told me to please be sure that the registered owner of the vehicle signed the registration. She explained that if you are pulled over and the back of your registration is not signed (even though it is valid), you will be fined $125.00

I was so stunned " I had to clarify: So, if I get pulled over, and even though my tags are valid, and the registration is in my possession BUT it is not signed by the registered owner, I will be given a ticket for $125.00?? She answered YES! Apparently, this is Michigan state legislature that has recently been put into effect. Pass it on Please

British Virgin Islands Opportunity

John Faitel John Faitel, a long time member of Sailing Singles and one of their most trusted skippers, is looking to round out his crew with two more congenial people for a trip to the BVI from March 11 to March 19.

The cost is $850 for a berth on the boat and all meals aboard. Other costs would be personal drinks, meals ashore and airfare. He is skippering a 50 foot Beneteau and can be contacted at 313-510-1089 or jrfaitel@yahoo.com.

DRYA Seminar Kickoff

Grosse Point Yacht Club Seminar The DRYA kicked off their 2007 Winter Sailing Seminars at the Grosse Pointe Yacht club on Wednesday January 10. In the photo above (l to r) Lynn Wargo of Sailing Singles; Ron Spies, The Rear Commodore of DRYA and PC of Grosse Isle Yacht Club; Peggy Jo and Steve Liroff of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club , the Grosse Pointe Sail Club and a member of the Seminar Committee. According to the official tally there were 57 people signed in but the crowd appeared to be much larger. The speakers were 1) Chris Behler ( 2) Glory Schappe (3) Tom Caulfield and (4) Eric Hollerbach. Several of the attendees gave their views also. Eric Hollerbach of the legendary Hollerbach sailing family related his history of sailing with his family and then going on to bigger and more competitive races but now returning to sail again with his family on Lake St Clair just for the "Joy of Sailing". He told the story of the time he took five teen-aged youth as crew for a Mackinack race just to emphasize that event, though very competitive, can still be enjoyed just for the fun of it.

The Seminar series will continue at The Ford Yacht Club on Grosse Isle this Wednesday January 17. (see below under Wednesday events)

Do you Know What A Reverse Mortgage Is?

by Teresa Fisher
Reverse Mortgages allow older homeowners to take a loan out against the equity they have built in their home. The loan provides tax-free cash and requires NO monthly mortgage payments during the course of the loan. The loan is repaid only when the borrower no longer occupies the home or a maturity event occurs (moving out or passing away).

Reverse Mortgage Facts:
  1. Must be 62 years old.
  2. Homeowner ALWAYS remains on title.
  3. Homeowner NEVER makes any payments (excluding taxes and insurance)
  4. Homeowner can NEVER be removed from home.
Reverse Mortgage can provide money for any or all of the following:
  1. Long-term care/ medical expenses.
  2. Daily living expenses/ Pay off debts.
  3. Insurance Products
  4. Home repairs
  5. Travel

FHA (HECM) offers one type of reverse mortgage that is insured by US government and id completely regulated. The amount of money available is based on age, value of home, and what money is owed

Homeowner can receive money as a monthly income, lump sum payment, line of credit, or any combination of these options. Additional information can be found on the following web sites: AARP(www.aarp.org), Fannie Mae (www.fanniemae.com), HUD (www.hud.gov). A local Reverse Mortgage Specialist, Teresa Fisher, can be contacted at 248-601-0625 office, 800-707-5874 ext 1433 or email at msteresafisher@yahoo.com to answer questions or discuss your needs.

I hope this has shed some light on the benefits of a Reverse Mortgage. Senior homeowners are recognizing the significance of the equity in their homes as a way to fund their retirement years and enjoy more financial freedom!
