Bayview Yacht Club continues the "overflow crowd" trend

On Wednesday January 11, 2012 and another overflow crowd attended the second of twelve seminars concerning sailing. Because of the technical nature of the topic, this seminar's crowd, was made up of yacht racing sailors or those that want to join in

In the photo with Peggy Jo are Loretta Rehe, the Past Commodore of Crescent Sail Yacht Club and Kevin Sherry, the Commodore of the Detroit Regional Yacht-Racing Association(DRYA). The seminars will be held each week on Wednesday night from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at various yacht clubs in the area. This year there will be one seminar held at Wayne State University's planetarium on January 25, 2012.

Commodore Sherry informed us that there will be some special events this summer in connection with the 100th Anniversary of the DRYA.

In addition to providing valuable knowledge about the sport of sailing the seminars provide an opportunity for people to visit the DRYA clubs and to mingle with other sailors during the winter.

The complete list of the seminars are at; http://www.peggyjostudio.net/wordpress/dryaseminars2012/ and the weekly meetings will be included in the newsletter each week.

National Hat Day

When : Always January 15th

National Hat Day is set aside to wear and enjoy a hat of your choice and style. Isn't it great that hats come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and styles? There's one to fit every size head and personality. Often, hats are used to make a statement, or to promote a cause or a product.

Oh yeah--- hats have logical uses, too. Some hats (Aka helmets), offer safety protection. Some hats keep your head warm.---how boring.

National Hat Day is not intended to just keep you warm. Its a chance to make a statement and to display you favorite headgear. We suggest you wear a number of different hats over the course of the day.

Did you know? More body heat is lost from your head than other parts of the body. So, wearing a hat goes a long way towards staying warm on a cold winter's day (or night). Click here to see some famous Hats

How Children View Their Grandparents!

I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!"

Emails from our readers

Frank Feldman

Dear Peggy Jo,

A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by. He gets into the taxi, and the cabbie says, 'Perfect timing. You're just like Frank.
Passenger: 'Who?'
Cabbie: 'Frank Feldman. He's a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happened like that to Frank Feldman every single time.'
Passenger: 'There are always a few clouds over everybody.'
Cabbie: 'Not Frank Feldman. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand-Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.'
Passenger: 'Sounds like he was something really special.'
Cabbie: 'There's more. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody's birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Frank Feldman, could do everything right.'
Passenger: 'Wow, some guy then.'
Cabbie: 'He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Frank Feldman.
' Passenger: 'An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?'
Cabbie: 'Well--- I never actually met Frank. He died and I married his wife.'

Yours truly,
J.T.

An Evening at The Planetarium
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2012-01-25
Seminar #4 Jan 25 AN EVENING AT THE PLANETARIUM: MARS, LAKE HURON AND CELESTIAL NAVIGATION
This very special DRYA evening will be held in the recently upgraded, state-of-the-art, digital Wayne State University Planetarium. The planetarium uses a Spitz SciDome HD projector to provide a spectacular full dome experience for visitors. The group will be divided into two segments to see the special planetarium show, and to receive a primer on celestial navigation from members of the Power Squadron. Both will be presented twice.

The planetarium show will include a look at the dazzling winter night sky, along with currently visible planets and a number of spectacular winter nebulae. Visitors will enjoy the use of special diffraction glasses and be treated to a stunning multi-media presentation on Mars. This will be followed by a tailored presentation of what it's like to be sailing on Lake Huron to racing and recreational destinations and all of the magic and navigational information to be gleaned. The Power Squadron will provide a primer on sextants and practical celestial navigation. The planetarium presentation is hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Wayne State and will be presented by Professor Jeff Conn.

This will be no charge for this evening, but "Wilson" will be passed and all donations will be accepted. The Planetarium is located on the lower level of Old Main (corner of Cass Avenue and W. Warren Avenue) near the main, Cass Avenue, entrance to the building. There is signage near entrances to help direct visitors to the planetarium.
