What we can learn from Sailors?

Most of us live in an area where medical assistance is just a 911 call away. But what if we were somewhere where that was unavailable. Dr. Robert Amsler was the speaker at the Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association (DRYA) seminar at the Bayview Yacht Club on Wednesday January 23, 2013. He had a planned presentation from which he deviated from to answer questons from the audience who were primarily sailors or friends and family of sailors that participate in Bayview's annual race from Port Huron To Mackinac Island. The questions and Dr. Amsler's answers could be a book in it self.

About Dr. Rob Amsler: Dr. AmslerDr. Amsler is a medical graduate of Michigan State University and has been in practice since 1978. As a certified member of the American Osteopathic Board of Family practice, Dr. Amsler is extensively skilled in a wide variety of clinical procedures and has special interests in Structural Medicine, Sports Medicine, Asthma, and Nutrition. He also frequently appears on area radio and television programs as a medical consultant and expert.

Dr. Amsler is the author of the online book How to Prepare a Medical Kit for Yacht Racing & Medical Tips for the Practicing Sailor We have received the permission of the doctor and Commodore Colpaert of Bayview Yacht Club to place excerpts from the book in this newsletter. The book is available for download at the Bayview Yacht Club website byc.com

We feel that some of the tips in the book are also very appropriate for people living alone. (See Get A Buddy)

Get a Buddy, No Matter How Old You Are!

Many more people are living alone nowadays so we started this campaign some time ago but it needs a re-visit, especially this time of year. The link is here

Peggy Jo's Recommendation

The Dinner Shows being presented by Empire Entertainment are class events and I heartily recommend them for a complete evening of entertainment. Here are some photos

Amyloidosis

Susan seated Susan Tabar is still struggling with her health and needs our prayers.

From Susan Jan 23,2013
Well, it has been a tumultuous three weeks, unfortunately. :( Initially, my tongue swelled-up to enormous proportions and landed me in the ER with a torn lip and much trauma. Then, I was admitted to the hospital and two days later contracted the flu having no symptoms except a 7 hour fever due to the masking by the heavy steroids and allergy meds that were given for my tongue situation (have not had the flu for 22 years) and was put on TamiFlu and ended up getting extremely sick from this nasty drug and almost bled to death with uncontrollable body functions from the root colon problems that were the precursors for this dreadful Amyloidosis for a week, developed anemia and then when I was feeling a bit better, had a chicken dinner from a restaurant and developed a 24 hour food poisoning -- in a nutshell, the past three weeks were a living hell for me.

DRYA Seminar #4 - January 30, 2013 "You Call that Damn Thing a Boat?" by DRYA Com. David M. Coleman and "The View From the Bridge" by Capt. Rick Scott (at the North Star Sail Club).

Capt. Alex. McDougall (1845 - 1923) was an iconic figure of early great lakes Dave Coleman shipping. Born in Islay, Scotland, he had little formal education but had a remarkable career as a laborer, blacksmith, mariner, captain, innovator, inventor, and business entrepreneur. He is most famous for his invention of the so-called Whaleback steamers and consorts, 43 of which were built between 1887 and 1898. Although successful in many ways they were ignominiously named "Pig Boats" by many crew. This presentation by David Coleman will include many historic photos and videos.

Finally, a brief description will be given of current efforts to restore the one extant Whaleback, the Meteor (nee Rockefeller) that is now in critical condition in Superior, WI. This effort is being led by a recent Commodore of the Duluth Yacht Club (a friend of Com. Coleman).

In addition Capt. Rick Scott will lead a short discussion on "The View From the Bridge" of commercial vessels and how that affects recreational boaters like ourselves. Capt. Scott is an officer on the Infinity/Ovation and the DYC Shuttle Master Captain. He also sails "Sweat Dreams" a 42 foot Albin Nimbus.

This seminar will be held at the North Star Sail Club on Wednesday, January 30 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Beverage service (only) will be available.
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 PM. Price is Free. Location: North Star Sail Club.32041 S River Rd Harrison Twp, MI' 48045 (586) 463-2192

Mobile Trends Shaping the Retail Experience
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-02-11
Join BlueWater Technologies, MARS Advertising and Team Detroit as Mobile Monday Detroit explores and discusses the 'New Retail' - choosing and integrating the right technologies and the increasing importance of integrating mobile development within the creative process.

Retail has reached a critical tipping point - the digital marketplace - where the lines between the virtual and physical sholpping world are blurring, placing signficantly more power in the hands of the consumer. This shift requires retailers to consistently and continuously engage customers with timely and relevant interactions, while providing a seamless shopping experience across all touch points. Consumer expectations of the shopping experience far exceed many retailers' capabilities to deliver, resulting in a fragmented customer journey and lost sales for the retailer.

The current trends are clear:

Customers are more empowered
Shopping has become omnipresent
Competition exists in new and compelling forms
Mobility is disrupting the path to purchase
New and innovative mobile solutions can provide a tailored and personalized shopping experience that builds loyalty, creates trust and transforms satisfied customers into advocates. Those who are able to seamlessly integrate mobile into their existing shopping experience stand to grow share of wallet and margin. Today's retailers face two choices: invest in mobile technology as a key way to exceed customer expectations, or risk losing sales and market share to the innovators in their retail segment.

SPEAKERS:

BlueWater Technologies

Dan Lorenz, Director of Innovation
Scott Schoeneberger, Experience Architect

MARS Advertising

Jason Unger, SVP Group Creative Director

Team Detroit

Aaron Smith, VP of Mobile & Tablet

The meeting takes place at Compuware Headquarters on Monday, February 11th at 5:30 p.m., and is free to attend though reservations are required for security and catering purposes.

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2013-02-20

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

by Loretta Rehe (at the Edison Boat Club)

Because an emergency can happen anytime anywhere, the American Heart Association's CPR and AED learning programs help increase survival rates by training people just like you to respond quickly. The sad truth is most people don't survive a cardiac arrest. Four to six minutes is the window of opportunity for someone to act before it is too late, but fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from someone nearby.

In the HeartSaver CPR/AED course, you will learn how to perform "Hands only CPR", and single rescuer CPR which includes Compressions, Airway and Breathing. You will learn abdominal thrusts to help someone who is choking. If you complete the course and pass your skills test, you will receive a card that states you have completed the objectives of the course.

You should be aware that this session is by advance registration only and is available for a limited number of participants. It is the only seminar with a fee to cover the cost of materials -- $30.00 paid with the registration. In the event that we receive reservations in excess of the capacity there may be a second session on Thursday, February 21. Final day to register is Friday, February 15, 2013. The presentation will start promptly at 7:00 PM at the Edison Boat Club. No food or beverage service will be available.
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 PM. Price is $30. Location: Edison Boat Club
