11 tips to avoid a winter pileup from a pro trucker

Road & Track By Alan Wrobel | Road & Track Wed, Jan 8, 2014 2:51 PM EST

In eight years as a truck driver, Alan Wrobel has driven 810,000 miles (accident-free) in 45 states and Ontario. He now covers Ohio, Michigan, Ontario, and Wisconsin for a beverage distributor. Here's some of his advice on how to handle yourself when the snow starts falling the rest is on the blog

When is Cold-Weather Driving Riskiest?

You face the greatest risk of losing traction on snowy, wet roads when temperatures are between 22 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit. At colder temperatures (10 to 20 degrees or less) snow-covered and icy roads afford more traction than at those warmer (22 to 35 degree) temperatures.

Don't believe it? Try this: Take two ice cubes. Place one in a deep freezer for 30 minutes. Drop the other in a glass of water. Try picking it in up with your fingertips. Notice how slippery it is? After 30 minutes, get the other ice cube from the freezer. My bet is it practically sticks to your fingers for a bit.

The same principle applies to driving. The ice is almost sticky in more extreme cold. But during heavy and slower traffic, more heat is applied to its surface, and traction will be commensurately reduced.

Ultimately, you're responsible for exercising your best judgment. If the weather is bad, stay put and let road crews do their jobs.

Be safe out there.

Emails from our readers:

Dear Peggy Jo,

Please post this letter in your "Superbowl Issue"

Some thought on the game of football.

Before I express my opinion, I would like to give some of my background. Back in the '50's I played sandlot football, high school football, U.S. Army football and some collegiate and semiprofessional football. Back then the game was played by what I will call "normal" people. People who were playing it as a game. People who would do some pre-season conditioning in order to be ready for the season.

The game was viewed, by educators, as a means of teaching valuable teamwork skills. Coaches were praised for designing systems that took advantage of particular skills of their talent pool and mitigating those skills that they did not have. Some professional players were not even full time. Les Bingeman, the great Detroit Lions middle guard, was also the bar tender at the Sax club in the off season which was, at that time 9 months of the year.

Now the game is played by dedicated people who spend many years developing their bodies to obtain maximum efficiency. Their nutritional diet, their mental skills are all aimed at conditioning. Using modern photographic techniques aids in correcting inefficient movements. They can run faster, jump higher and play longer. Coaches recruit talent to fit their particular system. Evaluation services test these people to rate their skills. The result is that these players can launch themselves as lethal weapons, using their headfirst tackles to not just stop an opponent but to cripple them.

Aside from developing an attractive body, most of these skills are not transferable. Because of the entertainment value and the massive amount of money that is involved the players are paid great amounts of money that, for some, will take of them for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately there are those that need extra care that dries up their funds rapidly.

Equipment has been developed to prevent fractures and sprains. But no equipment can prevent the damage that any sudden change of direction will cause ones brain, which is floating around in the head, to be bounced and injured. Scientists tell us that we only use 20% of our brain. Maybe we need that extra 80% to repair what we damage.

While watching the game, remember in terms of physique, round is also a shape.

Yours truly,
A long time football fan.

National Day of Prayer

THU 2014-05-01

Once again we will be gathering to observe the National Day Of Prayer at Shain Park in downtown Birmingham.

The National Day of Prayer is far more than a day to gather and pray. it is truly part of a much larger prayer movement that is changing the conditions of our culture.

ndp The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress' proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

BE THERE! 11:45am
From 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.. Location: Shain Park. Bates and Merrill, Birmingham, Mi.
