What we can learn from Sailors?

Most of us live in an area where medical assistance is just a 911 call away. But what if we were somewhere where that was unavailable. Dr. Robert Amsler was the speaker at the Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association (DRYA) seminar at the Bayview Yacht Club on Wednesday January 23, 2013.We feel that some of the tips in the book are also very appropriate for people living alone. (See Get A Buddy) This is the first of a series excerpted from Dr. Amslers book. Let us know what you think.

SORE THROAT

  • CEPASTAT or CHLORASEPTIC LOZENGES -- Very good to relieve a sore throat or a tickle that causes a cough. Use pediatric strength more frequently because no upset stomach is likely. Use as often as needed.
  • HOMEMADE GARGLE -- Crush aspirin, pinch bicarbonate of soda and vitamin C pill and mix in warm water. Gargle and swallow every 2 hours. (Alternative is one Original Alka-Seltzer gargled every 2 hours and swallowed.)
  • ZINC LOZENGES -- Very effective for colds and sore throat. Suck on 8 -- 10 the first day. Often, no second day is needed.
  • Peggy Jo has added: Gargle with warm water & Celtic sea salt . Drink several cups of hot water, honey, & lemon. (a touch of Whiskey optional) .

Get a Buddy, No Matter How Old You Are!

Many more people are living alone nowadays so we started this campaign some time ago but it needs a re-visit, especially this time of year. The link is here

Safe Sailing: Prepare or Beware
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2013-02-06

Safe Sailing: Prepare or Beware

by Phil LePage & Tim Metcalf (at the Detroit Yacht Club)

Ask sailors the definition of "safe sailing" and you will get many different answers. This session will address the topic from two points of view. The first part will review some of the equipment, techniques and training that can reduce the likelihood of an emergency at sea. Later, we'll take a look at what can be done with a boat's electronics and software.

Phil LePage is a founder and twice Past Commodore of the Doublehanded Sailing Association. He has a lifetime of sailing experience, including multiple Atlantic crossings. He owns and sails a C&C 44 sloop. He is the owner of Northeast Metalcraft, a custom and limited production machining and metalworking business located in Pontiac.

Tim Metcalf is the Vice Commodore of the Doublehanded Sailing Association for the 2012 sailing season. He has been sailing for more than 30 years, on boats from twenty to seventy feet long. His has owned his current boat, a C&C 41 sloop, for more than twenty years. He owns TCM Marine Electronics Services, a small business that sells, installs and integrates marine navigation electronics hardware and software. He is also a Licensed US Coast Guard Captain.

This seminar will be held at the Detroit Yacht Club from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Bar and (limited menu) grill service will be available starting at 1730. Food and drink specials will be featured for DRYA seminar attendees. Credit cards only. The dress code has been waived for the evening.

Blue Water Ski Club Meeting

WED 2013-02-06

Blue Water International Ski Club

Port Huron, MI & Sarnia, ONTARIO

The Blue Water International Ski Club has over a hundred members who all share a love of travel and outdoor adventure. The club plans and facilitates at least two trips every year. In the past few seasons we've skied; Vail and Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado; Moonlight Basin, Montana; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Whistler and Panorama, British Columbia; Killington, Vermont and Sugerloaf, Maine just to name a few. Because we travel as a club we enjoy reduced rates on airfare, lift tickets and condo fees, so our trips are reasonable and affordable. Every level of skier is welcome as we have members who ski the easy runs as well as those who take on the aggressive slopes. New members will find that we double as a social club with fun, interactive meetings and events such as BBQ's, golf outings and sailing get togethers planned year round. This is a great place for couples and singles to meet new people and make new friends.

Mobile Trends Shaping the Retail Experience
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-02-11
Join BlueWater Technologies, MARS Advertising and Team Detroit as Mobile Monday Detroit explores and discusses the 'New Retail' - choosing and integrating the right technologies and the increasing importance of integrating mobile development within the creative process.

Retail has reached a critical tipping point - the digital marketplace - where the lines between the virtual and physical sholpping world are blurring, placing signficantly more power in the hands of the consumer. This shift requires retailers to consistently and continuously engage customers with timely and relevant interactions, while providing a seamless shopping experience across all touch points. Consumer expectations of the shopping experience far exceed many retailers' capabilities to deliver, resulting in a fragmented customer journey and lost sales for the retailer.

The current trends are clear:

Customers are more empowered
Shopping has become omnipresent
Competition exists in new and compelling forms
Mobility is disrupting the path to purchase
New and innovative mobile solutions can provide a tailored and personalized shopping experience that builds loyalty, creates trust and transforms satisfied customers into advocates. Those who are able to seamlessly integrate mobile into their existing shopping experience stand to grow share of wallet and margin. Today's retailers face two choices: invest in mobile technology as a key way to exceed customer expectations, or risk losing sales and market share to the innovators in their retail segment.

SPEAKERS:

BlueWater Technologies

Dan Lorenz, Director of Innovation
Scott Schoeneberger, Experience Architect

MARS Advertising

Jason Unger, SVP Group Creative Director

Team Detroit

Aaron Smith, VP of Mobile & Tablet

The meeting takes place at Compuware Headquarters on Monday, February 11th at 5:30 p.m., and is free to attend though reservations are required for security and catering purposes.

Free parking is available to those who utilize Compuware's parking deck and have their parking stub validated when signing in at the meeting. Refreshments will be served.

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2013-02-20

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

by Loretta Rehe (at the Edison Boat Club)

Because an emergency can happen anytime anywhere, the American Heart Association's CPR and AED learning programs help increase survival rates by training people just like you to respond quickly. The sad truth is most people don't survive a cardiac arrest. Four to six minutes is the window of opportunity for someone to act before it is too late, but fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from someone nearby.

In the HeartSaver CPR/AED course, you will learn how to perform "Hands only CPR", and single rescuer CPR which includes Compressions, Airway and Breathing. You will learn abdominal thrusts to help someone who is choking. If you complete the course and pass your skills test, you will receive a card that states you have completed the objectives of the course.

You should be aware that this session is by advance registration only and is available for a limited number of participants. It is the only seminar with a fee to cover the cost of materials -- $30.00 paid with the registration. In the event that we receive reservations in excess of the capacity there may be a second session on Thursday, February 21. Final day to register is Friday, February 15, 2013. The presentation will start promptly at 7:00 PM at the Edison Boat Club. No food or beverage service will be available.
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 PM. Price is $30. Location: Edison Boat Club
