The Devil is in the Details

Often we hear the request to get to the bottom line. On Wednesday February 1, 2012, at the Bayview Yacht Club, Bruce Burton

Past Commodore of the Bayview Yacht Club and both National and International Etchell’s Champion, led a discussion featuring the details of sailboat racing and the sailors present asked for even more details.

An example ofthe commodore's detail suggestions was to use a cell phone camera to relay information about the shape of one's sail to the sailmaker.

In the photo with Peggy Jo is DRYA Historian, David Coleman who, along with DRYA Chief Handicapper David Spiers will be leading a seminar on salboat ratings.

How Children View Their Grandparents!

Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. 'It means carrying a child."

Letters from our readers

Dear Peggy Jo,
Check this link out and read about how Royal Oak is attempting to put this family's dog down because some "bone head" does not know how to approach an unfamiliar animal. (And the poor dog was just raising up to greet him. It's happened to many of us, myself included). Also this man appears to be litigious and found an animal-unfriendly assistant prosecutor (per other reports).

The petition does not require your residence be in Royal Oak. These creatures need a voice and I next to never send out such an appeal. Signing the petition will help, I hope, but there are no guarantees.

Thank you,
Sharon Bear

Membership Event
Preservation Wayne

THU 2012-02-09
Hi everyone - mark your calendars - the PW annual Members Event is Feb 9. For those of you who haven't been to one before, it's always held in a historic building that isn't usually open to the public - this time the former world HQ of the Kresge Corp (just 'across the street' from the Masonic Temple, and almost across the street from Brush Park!!) Since Kresge left many years ago, the building has housed a number of technology inititives including the current one - the Metropolitan Center for High Technology. We always get a chance to see 'behind the scenes' of the building, which is always very cool. There will be a silent auction of historic memorabilia and other fun stuff. Price is $35 (or $60 for 2), just to cover the costs of putting on the event. See the attached link to RSVP. Marion also suggested that we all wear our badges, so we can show off our wonderful tour teams!! I am sure we still have a couple available in our tour bag if you need one!! Thanks---Lisa

Speaking Event featuring author Dennis Hale - Sole Survivor of a Great Lakes Shipwreck

SUN 2012-02-19
The International Shipmasters' Association will host a speaking event featuring author Dennis Hale, sole survivor of the Daniel J. Morrell tragedy. On the night of November 28, 1966, the Daniel J. Morrell encountered a gale on Lake Huron with winds up to 70 MPH and waves as high as 25 feet. At 2 AM on November 29th, 26 miles northeast of Harbor Beach, MI, the Daniel J. Morrell broke in two and sank. Of the 29-man crew, there was only one survivor, 26 year old watchman Dennis Hale. Wearing only boxer shorts, a pea coat and lifejacket, Hale spent 38 hours on a barrel-tubed life raft before being rescued. With temperatures hovering around freezing, doctors were mystified how he managed to survive. Please join us to hear Mr. Hale's thoughts and comments. To the best of his ability, he will also answer questions about his extraordinary experience. His presentation also includes two short videos. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
