What we can learn from Sailors?

Most of us live in an area where medical assistance is just a 911 call away. But what if we were somewhere where that was unavailable. Dr. Robert Amsler was the speaker at the Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association (DRYA) seminar at the Bayview Yacht Club on Wednesday January 23, 2013.We feel that some of the tips in his book are also very appropriate for people living alone. (See Get A Buddy) This is the second of a series excerpted from Dr. Amsler's book. Let us know what you think.

STOMACH, CONSTIPATION AND DIARRHEA

  • Mylanta, Maalox or Gaviscon Calcium, magnesium or aluminum hydroxide used to neutralize stomach acid, heart burn, stomach burn and to calm an upset stomach. They can be used very frequently and often helpful with seasickness. Side effects may include diarrhea (magnesium) or constipation (calcium).
  • Prilosec Use for acid stomach, heartburn, and reflux of acid. Take 1 tablet twice a day as needed.
  • Pepcid Complete Use for stomach ulcer or heartburn or stomach pain that does not improve with Mylanta. Great for heartburn when sleeping. Great for sailors.
  • Dulcolax 5mg (bisacodyl) Use for constipation. Comes in pill or suppository form. Remember to refrigerate suppositories.
  • Imodium A-D (loperamide hcl) Use in addition to fluids and electrolyte replacement for diarrhea. Use as directed on the bottle.
  • Peggy Jo has added: Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar is great for digestion. According to studies it's been used for centuries as a natural remedy for heartburn.

Get a Buddy, No Matter How Old You Are!

Many more people are living alone nowadays so we started this campaign some time ago but it needs a re-visit, especially this time of year. We have added some information on the upcomng proposal for implementing the "7-10 System" The link is here

Mobile Trends Shaping the Retail Experience
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-02-11
Join BlueWater Technologies, MARS Advertising and Team Detroit as Mobile Monday Detroit explores and discusses the 'New Retail' - choosing and integrating the right technologies and the increasing importance of integrating mobile development within the creative process.

Retail has reached a critical tipping point - the digital marketplace - where the lines between the virtual and physical sholpping world are blurring, placing signficantly more power in the hands of the consumer. This shift requires retailers to consistently and continuously engage customers with timely and relevant interactions, while providing a seamless shopping experience across all touch points. Consumer expectations of the shopping experience far exceed many retailers' capabilities to deliver, resulting in a fragmented customer journey and lost sales for the retailer.

The current trends are clear:

Customers are more empowered
Shopping has become omnipresent
Competition exists in new and compelling forms
Mobility is disrupting the path to purchase
New and innovative mobile solutions can provide a tailored and personalized shopping experience that builds loyalty, creates trust and transforms satisfied customers into advocates. Those who are able to seamlessly integrate mobile into their existing shopping experience stand to grow share of wallet and margin. Today's retailers face two choices: invest in mobile technology as a key way to exceed customer expectations, or risk losing sales and market share to the innovators in their retail segment.

SPEAKERS:

BlueWater Technologies

Dan Lorenz, Director of Innovation
Scott Schoeneberger, Experience Architect

MARS Advertising

Jason Unger, SVP Group Creative Director

Team Detroit

Aaron Smith, VP of Mobile & Tablet

The meeting takes place at Compuware Headquarters on Monday, February 11th at 5:30 p.m., and is free to attend though reservations are required for security and catering purposes.

Free parking is available to those who utilize Compuware's parking deck and have their parking stub validated when signing in at the meeting. Refreshments will be served.

The Science of Optimizing & Interpreting Instruments
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2013-02-13

The Science of Optimizing & Interpreting Instruments

by Mike Ruhland (at the Grosse Pointe Sail Club (Tompkins Center))

The yacht "Dolphin" and its crew are folk heroes around the Great Lakes. Despite her 35 years, this one-off Mull 54 has finished in the money 11 out of the last 18 Bayview Macs amongst many other races. Mike is her tactician and speed-king, and applies his business analysis and technical problem-solving skills to the art of winning sailboat races.

In 1987, after attending an Ockam U seminar, he sold his dad and team patriarch on the ideas and the need for new instruments to implement them. Then he bought and installed an Ockam system himself and trained the crew in its use. They are still using that same system.

Mike will tell how to calibrate sailing instruments so you can have confidence in the information they provide. With that trustworthy information, he will discuss how to use it in the context of a race, e.g. what numbers do the tactician, the helmsman, and the sail trimmers need.

He will illustrate the value of this approach with an experience from a race in which it was used. Finally he will tell us about the Ockam U seminar and how it can help us to do better on the race course.

This seminar will be held at the Tompkins Center from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Refreshments are often available at GPSC hosted events.
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 PM. Price is Free. Location: Tompkins Center

MSDA Monthly Dance
Michigan Swing Dance Association

SUN 2013-02-17
Every month, the MSDA holds a kick-ass dance, usually on the third Sunday. Our dance is held at the gorgeous Rhythm -n- Shoes Ballroom Dance Studio in Bloomfield Hills. There are lessons at 3 PM and a dance party from 4 to 8 PM. The music is California Mix with East and West Coast Swing, Hustle, Ballroom, Latin and Country and our DJ, Phil Dorroll, takes requests. We throw in a Speed Dating Dance and a Newcomer Mixer just to change things up a bit. A light meal is served, as well as snacks, soft drinks and cake, plus we give away door prizes to people whose tickets are drawn.

For members, the dance is $9 and the lesson is free. For non-members, the lesson is $4 and the dance is $11. If you join the club at the dance, you save $6. .

The MSDA dances are attended by couple and singles alike. For the most part, our members are single and we are always happy to see new members join. The MSDA is like a big, friendly family and we are very comfortable asking each other to dance. In other words, men ask women and women ask men. That's our format. If you have never been to an MSDA dance, your first visit is FREE!!

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2013-02-20

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

by Loretta Rehe (at the Edison Boat Club)

Because an emergency can happen anytime anywhere, the American Heart Association's CPR and AED learning programs help increase survival rates by training people just like you to respond quickly. The sad truth is most people don't survive a cardiac arrest. Four to six minutes is the window of opportunity for someone to act before it is too late, but fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from someone nearby.

In the HeartSaver CPR/AED course, you will learn how to perform "Hands only CPR", and single rescuer CPR which includes Compressions, Airway and Breathing. You will learn abdominal thrusts to help someone who is choking. If you complete the course and pass your skills test, you will receive a card that states you have completed the objectives of the course.

You should be aware that this session is by advance registration only and is available for a limited number of participants. It is the only seminar with a fee to cover the cost of materials -- $30.00 paid with the registration. In the event that we receive reservations in excess of the capacity there may be a second session on Thursday, February 21. Final day to register is Friday, February 15, 2013. The presentation will start promptly at 7:00 PM at the Edison Boat Club. No food or beverage service will be available.
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 PM. Price is $30. Location: Edison Boat Club
