Legends

According to legend St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.

Bravissimo

to Kerry Kelly Novick who conducted a totally enjoyable and informative evening at the Michigan Opera Building on Thursday February 9, 2012. The Bravissimo group sponsored her presentation as part of the Dance Film Series and had to add more chairs to accommodate the full house crowd.

Kerry is the daughter of famed dancer, actor, teacher, choreographer, film producer Gene Kelly. She showed film clips of her father's early films and many of his most popular ones. In between the clips she answered questions from the audience and we learned that Gene Kelly did not even enter show business until he was 29 years of age when he left Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was born and raised, to go to New York city. Ethel Merman recommended him for a role in the Broadway production of "Pal Joey" where he was noticed by MGM.

He was a dance teacher and coach to many film and television stars including Michael Jackson and Madonna. Even though his dancing looked relaxed and effortless, Kerry let it be known that her father was a perfectionist that worked long hours perfecting his dance routines. She told the audience about one short segment of scene involving him and Frank Sinatra jumping from a line of barracks cots had to be taken 73 times before he was satisfied with the timing..

Kerry was asked about her dancing and she said that she did take lessons but only one from her dad. She made up her mind at the age of 12 that she wanted to be a psychologist.

Kerry and her husband Jack Novick, have been working with children and families on thoughtful, positive parenting techniques for more than four decades. Psychoanalysts and psychologists, they are the founders of the innovative Allen Creek Preschool in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As internationally recognized authorities on child and adolescent development. They have authored the book Emotional Muscle.

How Children View Their Grandparents!

Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. 'It means carrying a child."

The winner was "Porcelain Unicorn" from American director Keegan Wilcox.

Letters from our readers

Dear Peggy Jo,
Check this link out and read about how Royal Oak is attempting to put this family's dog down because some "bone head" does not know how to approach an unfamiliar animal. (And the poor dog was just raising up to greet him. It's happened to many of us, myself included). Also this man appears to be litigious and found an animal-unfriendly assistant prosecutor (per other reports).

The petition does not require your residence be in Royal Oak. These creatures need a voice and I next to never send out such an appeal. Signing the petition will help, I hope, but there are no guarantees.

Thank you,
S

Response from a reader

Peggy Jo:
You might want to check your sources more carefully because your newsletter will lose credibility if you present such a one sided approach to an issue. My sisters are both veterinarians and will tell you there is no excuse for a dog to bite a human.

The information below is from the city of Royal Oak:

---"That's completely inaccurate," City Attorney David Gillam said Thursday as links to the website were tweeted and shared on social media ahead of the Feb. 9 court date.

Gillam disputes claims that Royal Oak is out to destroy the dog. He said the city did present two options: euthanize the dog or move her outside of Royal Oak. However, the issue could be resolved by sending the dog to obedience school, muzzling her whenever she is outside the owner's McLean Avenue home, or some other action.

"I wouldn't say anything is off the table," Gillam said. "We're trying to make sure the owner takes steps so the dog doesn't hurt anyone else. A fellow was bitten in the face."

Seagraves couldn't be reached for comment. His attorney, Harold Perakis, said Seagraves had one surgery and needs another.

"When this dog bit my client, he ended up with marks from its teeth and a broken nose," Perakis said. "He can only breathe out of one nostril. It's a problem."

"He has no say in what happens to the dog," the attorney said. "Each city has different remedies for dangerous dogs and it is the legal obligation of the city attorney to follow up. It's very true that a dog gets one bite. That's the reality of it."

Gillam said photos taken after the incident show the victim with two puncture wounds on his nose and two below his lip. The city attorney refutes website claims that the victim's nose was hurt when he bent over to pet the dog as the animal jumped up.

"This was no head butt," Gillam said. "The victim was bitten and medical records confirm that."

DEMYSTIFYING RATINGS
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2012-02-15
Seminar #7 Feb 15 DEMYSTIFYING RATINGS De-Mystifying Rating Systems" will be presented by DRYA Chief Handicapper David Spiers and DRYA VC and Nautical Historian, David M. Coleman. The Holy Grail of any yacht rating system is the fair and equitable leveling of the playing field for often-disparate vessels. The first part of the presentation will be a brief historical look at the evolution of sailboat rating systems. Professor Coleman will review the evolution of this concept from the first 'America's Cup' race, through the mighty J's. Included will be a discussion of Herreshoff's "Universal Rule" and the development of the alphabet classes (P, Q, R, and J) and the Meter Classes. The parameters from these early racing systems are precedent to today's and their evolution will be tracked descriptively and with visuals. The majority of the evening will briefly review the IRC, IMS, ORR and One Design handicapping systems and usage in today's yacht racing. Then we will discuss in detail the PHRF System used by about 80% of the racers in the world today, as well as who administers the databases and how consistency is addressed. We will cover the US Sailing databases, standards and what items affect the rating and how we address them to give fair handicaps and racing across the many types of yachts racing today. Questions are welcome! Comments are expected. The Detroit Yacht Club, on Belle Isle, will be our host for this seminar from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. The Starboard Haven Lounge will be open with a limited (special) menu starting at 5:30 PM. Credit cards please; formal dress code has been waived for the evening click here for seminar details
