Something to Think About!

This article was viewed by many and evoked a few comments so we are repeatiing it.

We posted an article in the blog relating a story that might not be based upon a true incident but it could happen.

It warns people to not put their home phone number in their contact list on their cell phones. It also warns about other things that should not be kept in your car. The article is here

Jay Deeds 1912-2009

It is sad to announce the passing of Jay Deeds in the evening hours of February 11,2009.  Jay first started working with Jay DeedsDRYA in the 1960s.  He began serving as mark set boat on the C Course when it was established and continued serving until 2 years ago.  During that period he went through Septet I through Septet IV.  He truly provided support to the Detroit area sailors giving him much earned respect and admiration.  He also served as Equipment Chairman for these many years bringing the trailer with race equipment to each club every week.  Not only did he care for the equipment, he also designed and made the equipment to suit the specific need of DRYA.  He also served as Commodore of the Grosse Pointe Sail Club, the Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association and the Commodores Club of Detroit.
He will be greatly missed by his many friends in the sailing community.
Our prayers and support are extended to his family.

This Week's Now Famous Person

Judy Benn

Judy Benn is now famous because she is appearing in the "Got Mustard Campaign" She is also famous for being a three term past president of the Somerset Singles Ski and Golf Club, she provides valuable information to this newsletter each week and is an outstanding vocalist.

So when you see or contact Judy be sure to tell her you've seen her in the "Got Mustard" campaign. You can see the other hundreds of people by clicking on the underlined words above.

So many people have volunteered to participate that we have found it necessary to change the way the slide show runs so that people can browse rather than wait to see their photo with the "digital mustard" on their upper lip. One can replace the phrase in the section box with their first name and deleting any other text in the box. Then only the slides that contain that name are displayed.

If you had your photo taken and can't find it in the slide show please send us an email. If you would like to send a photo to be included, send it to We will supply the "digital mustard".

Congratulations Judy Benn!

What was I thinking?????

How could I (of all people) forget about Valentine's Day - one of my favorite days?
I guess it just snuck up on me!
Well, Happy Valentine's Month everyone -
It's never too late to send flowers, share a box of candy, or give a Valentine's Hug.
Bouquets to all of you - my Valentines.

Protein catches up with carbs to boost athletes

BY JANICE LLOYD • USA TODAY • February 15, 2009

If you're an athlete who leans toward strenuous workouts, whether you pound the pavement or fly down black diamond ski slopes, it is time to tweak your recovery, sports nutritionists say.

The long-held belief encouraging avid exercisers and elite athletes to rehydrate and to reload with carbohydrates is passé. Protein has muscled its way back into popularity.
Studies show that carbohydrates combined with a little protein creates a better muscle refueling and building response, and it reduces cortisol, a hormone that breaks down muscle, according to Nancy Clark, an active member of the American Dietetic Association's sports nutritionists and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Timing is also important.
"When our athletes reach the finish line, they're trained to go right to the feed bag," said Troy Flanagan, head of sports science for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. Flanagan is with the ski team at the World Championships in Val d'Isere, France, where Lyndsey Vonn won her second gold medal Monday.
"They can take a sports drink, a milk, or yogurt drink," he said. "The feed bag is right on the hill. They will eat straight away."

Refueling and rebuilding

Clark says to grasp why the ski team's feed bag exists is to understand how the body conducts two fundamental tasks: refueling for energy and rebuilding muscle.
Carbohydrates -- grains, fruits, vegetables -- digest into glucose, and that glucose is gasoline to the muscles. Extra glucose gets stored in the muscles as glycogen to maintain normal blood glucose (sugar level) and fuel the brain. During prolonged exercise, levels of glycogen in muscle and liver are tapped. Glycogen depletion is associated with fatigue.
A 1966 study showed that after exercising, athletes replaced depleted muscle glycogen more quickly by consuming carbohydrates (such as pasta, potato, rice) as compared with a high-protein or high-fat diet (such as fried chicken, cheese omelet, steak). The high-protein subjects remained glycogen depleted for five days, while those on the high-carb diet replaced glycogen in two days.
Carbs do not build or repair muscle. Protein does that job. Clark says that in fine-tuning the science of recovery, studies started re-introducing small amounts of protein to carbohydrates to see if the combo would speed up muscle recovery without sacrificing glycogen refueling.

Eating as soon as possible

John Ivy, a kinesiologist at the University of Texas, has been one of the leading scientists advancing ideas about protein lately. He invented a sports drink used by Michael Phelps and his teammates on the swim team at the Beijing Olympics that's designed to reduce soreness and promote recovery when consumed soon after racing or working out.
"Immediately post-exercise, muscle is very sensitive to nutrient taken," said Ivy.
Olympian Bill Demong eats as soon as he can after a challenging workout -- even when he does not feel like eating. He competes in cross-country skiing and ski jumping as a Nordic combined specialist.
"Eating within 30 minutes of a hard or prolonged workout is critical in recovery," he said. "And actually within 10 minutes is almost twice as good to replenish glycogen stores quickly."
He likes a pop like Coke or Fanta immediately and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich soon after, followed by a long cooldown for recovery."
Vonn's reward after competing is a sports drink, followed by an energy drink for extra glucose.
Clark has a tip for fitness exercisers, who are mostly trying to lose weight and do not damage muscle or deplete glycogen stores.
"For them, eating something after exercise can nip the appetite in the bud, before the cookie monster visits," she says. "A protein-carb combo can be more satiating than carbs alone."

love ya

Hey Peggy Jo.

I know it's still over a month away, and it's hard for singles (especially) to ca-ca-ca-ca-comit, but I would appreciate it if you could start noting this year's Victory Party in the Comming Events section of you letter.  And I hope YOU come again:

1.      Victory Party III: A Spring Fever Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 21st, 2009.  For the third year in a row, we're doing it again.  This is a chance for you to meet old friends, and make new ones, enjoy great music, dance, and have fun - all for a good cause.  Those of you who came the last two years remember how much fun this is, and you felt good at the same time, knowing that all proceeds go to our American Cancer Society Relay for Life team’s fundraising effort.  Bring your date, or come alone and meet someone new there.   start at 7:00 and end at 1:00 at  Barnstormer Banquet Center (9411 E M-36, Whitmore Lake, MI).  We'll have two ballrooms, with a DJ in one, and a live band in the other; it's like two great parties under one roof, and you can mingle between the two all evening long.  Help us blow the top of our efforts the last two years, and buy your tickets early:  $20 in advance, or $30 at-the-door so don't wait.  Get your tickets on line at (click the Donate link then click on Enter an Amount equal to $20 per ticket, One Time Gift, your name (or simply Victory Party in the Recognition Name field, and finally, a note to me telling me your name, email, and number of tickets you bought.  The rest is simple).  Or mail your check, payable to The American Cancer Society, to PO Box158, Hamburg, MI  48139.  Questions?  Call Joe at 810-923-1567

   Thanks. . .Joe

Staying Alive with CPR Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2009-02-18
In the face of the unexpected collapse of another human, on board or off, what can you or someone else do? Many bystanders who witness a person collapse are hesitant to perform cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) because they are not appropriately trained or reluctant to perform mouth-to-mouth breathing. CPR is a lifesaving procedure that is performed when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped, as in cases of electric shock, drowning, or heart attack. Get that training by joining us for a three hour instructional seminar on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:00pm as the Edison Boat Club (EBC) taught by Loretta LoRe, a fellow sailor and certified CPR instructor. There is a nominal of $20.00 to cover the costs of educational materials. to have adequate equipment and instructors on hand. Participation is limited.
