" God isn't asking us to earn His love. He's simply asking us to turn towards His love."
A Holy Experience

What we can learn from Sailors?

Most of us live in an area where medical assistance is just a 911 call away. But what if we were somewhere where that was unavailable. Dr. Robert Amsler was the speaker at the Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association (DRYA) seminar at the Bayview Yacht Club on Wednesday January 23, 2013.We feel that some of the tips in his book are also very appropriate for people living alone. (See Get A Buddy) This is the second of a series excerpted from Dr. Amsler's book. Let us know what you think.

CUTS AND ABRASIONS

  • No matter how much it hurts, scrub it out. If it starts bleeding again, treat like any bleeding with compression.
  • Never close a puncture wound (one that is deeper than wide). This includes bites. Wash, work Bacitracin deep into the wound and place a dressing on the wound.
  • To handle a moderately deep wound without suturing:
    • 1. Scrub it out.
    • 2. Let bleeding stop or slow (use pressure if needed) to a trickle.
    • 3. Pull edges together with tape.
    • 4. Pad the wound on each side to hold edges together.
    • 5. Wrap firmly with ace wrap.
    • 6. Note: Deep wounds need to be held together with Ace wraps for at least 10-14 days.
  • Ice is always appropriate over the bandage and NOT on exposed skin.
  • Most wounds heal well if immobilized long enough. Use bandages and splints. Keep them on longer than you think you should.
  • All deep palm lacerations require antibiotics NOW! This area is known as NO MAN'S LAND! Seek medical attention.
  • Ripped nails and nail beds look worse than they are. Cool down with ice or soak in ice water for 20-30 minutes then maneuver skin and nail into a normal position and tape in place. DO NOT REMOVE NAIL.
  • Peggy Jo's additions:
    • Washing of one's hands often, is essential to good health.
    • Just as Dr. Amsler's book is aimed at actions to be taken, when at sea, It is advisable that one always carry some form of hand sanitizer.
    • Make sure that the hand sanitizer, something like "Wet Ones", contains enough alcohol to do the job.

Get a Buddy, No Matter How Old You Are!

Many more people are living alone nowadays so we started this campaign some time ago but it needs a re-visit, especially this time of year. We have added some information on the upcomng proposal for implementing the "7-10 System" The link is here

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association

WED 2013-02-20

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

by Loretta Rehe (at the Edison Boat Club)

Because an emergency can happen anytime anywhere, the American Heart Association's CPR and AED learning programs help increase survival rates by training people just like you to respond quickly. The sad truth is most people don't survive a cardiac arrest. Four to six minutes is the window of opportunity for someone to act before it is too late, but fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from someone nearby.

In the HeartSaver CPR/AED course, you will learn how to perform "Hands only CPR", and single rescuer CPR which includes Compressions, Airway and Breathing. You will learn abdominal thrusts to help someone who is choking. If you complete the course and pass your skills test, you will receive a card that states you have completed the objectives of the course.

You should be aware that this session is by advance registration only and is available for a limited number of participants. It is the only seminar with a fee to cover the cost of materials -- $30.00 paid with the registration. In the event that we receive reservations in excess of the capacity there may be a second session on Thursday, February 21. Final day to register is Friday, February 15, 2013. The presentation will start promptly at 7:00 PM at the Edison Boat Club. No food or beverage service will be available.
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 PM. Price is $30. Location: Edison Boat Club

Blessing of the Fleet - Sailing Singles
Sailing Singles

SUN 2013-03-10
The "Blessing of the Fleet" Mariners' Church of Detroit March 10, Sunday 11 am service, (313) 259-2206 170 E Jefferson Ave, Detroit MI www.marinerschurchofdetroit.org Come mark the beginning of the 2013 boating season. Sailing Single Club 's Flag will be presented at the service by Commodore Pamela Rupinski. This is a yearly spring event, a beautiful ceremony in a beautiful church. Plan on arriving at the church by 10 am to be seated for the ceremony. Come late and it is standing room only. Tea, coffee and cookies are served after the service in the church basement. From all area highways, head Downtown Detroit--follow Tunnel to Canada signs, to Jefferson Ave. Park under ground in the Ford Auditorium Parking Garage. Enter Church from the garage or at main doors on Jefferson. Church is next to (west of) the Renaissance Center. Less than a block west of Mariners, at Woodward, is the entrance ramp to the Ford Auditorium underground garage. Free Parking The attendant can direct you to the far corner of the secured garage, where Mariners' doors are just a few steps away. Be sure to get a validation card for free parking inside the church. Those traveling East on Jefferson (e.g. coming off the Lodge Freeway, from Cobo Hall) will stay in the left lane. On Jefferson, at Woodward (and at the Joe Louis Fist statue), go straight through the intersection and veer left into the median strip of Jefferson, and proceed down into the underground garage. Those traveling West (Southwest) on Jefferson (e.g. coming off of 375 or down Jefferson from Northeast Detroit) stay in the left-hand lane as you pass Renaissance Center. Just before Woodward, make a leftward U-turn into the median strip of Jefferson, and go down into the underground garage. http://marinerschurchofdetroit.org/directions/ FYI, if you miss the underground parking at Woodward , don't make your U-turn in the Windsor Tunnel Entrance or you'll be singing "O Canada" before you know it!
