7 Diet Mistakes You Can Avoid
by Christine McKinney, M.S., R.D., C.D.E.
Setting unrealistic goals. When you set goals for a diet, make sure those goals are achievable. Don't try to do everything at once and then expect to suddenly weigh what you did in high school. An example of an attainable goal might be to eat two snacks of fresh fruit every day and three servings of vegetables between lunch and dinner.
Eating only one time each day. I often hear that people, in order to "save" calories, are skipping breakfast and lunch and only eating dinner. Let me tell you: This plan will save you no calories and can squelch your metabolism in the bargain. Eating three meals a day is important to your general health. (I undesrstand soumo wrestlers would do that to gain weight)
Thinking short-term only. This is why people lose and then regain weight so quickly. A change in diet isn't meant to be just for a few months; it should become a lifelong habit. Think long-term changes.
Underestimating your food portions. We are all guilty of this. Research shows that, when recalling foods consumed, most people under-report the amounts they ate. You may think that you only are having one cup of cereal — but use a measuring cup just to be sure.
Making your diet plan too restrictive. When starting a diet, people usually err on the side of caution and eat too little — a practice they aren't able to maintain long-term. Also, a diet never means excluding major food groups like whole grains, fruits, or dairy.
Not having a support system. When working on eating healthier, the more support you have the better. Tell others around you about your goals and let them know how they can best help you.
Forgetting about exercise. People often ask me, "Which one is more important, diet or exercise?" I reply, "Do you want your airplane to have one wing or two?" Diet and exercise need to be done together — don't forget to exercise regularly.
The Rest of the Story
This email has been going around

But we're sorry to hear "The rest of his story" that
he died Feb.28,2009
If I were the devil . . .
I would gain control of the most powerful nation in the world;
I would delude their minds into thinking that they had come from man's effort, instead of God's blessings;
I would promote an attitude of loving things and using people, instead of the other way around;
I would dupe entire states into relying on gambling for their state revenue;
I would convince people that character is not an issue when it comes to leadership;
I would make it legal to take the life of unborn babies;
I would make it socially acceptable to take one's own life, and invent machines to make it convenient;
I would cheapen human life as much as possible so that the life of animals are valued more than human beings;
I would take God out of the schools, where even the mention of His name was grounds for a lawsuit;
I would come up with drugs that sedate the mind and target the young, and I would get sports heroes to advertise them;
I would get control of the media, so that every night I could pollute the mind of every family member for my agenda;
I would attack the family, the backbone of any nation.
I would make divorce acceptable and easy, even fashionable. If the family crumbles, so does the nation;
I would compel people to express their most depraved fantasies on canvas and movie screens, and I would call it art;
I would convince the world that people are born homosexuals, and that their lifestyles should be accepted and marveled;
I would convince the people that right and wrong are determined by a few who call themselves authorities and refer to their agenda as politically correct;
I would persuade people that the church is irrelevant and out of date, and the Bible is for the naive;
I would dull the minds of Christians, and make them believe that prayer is not important, and that faithfulness and obedience are optional;
I guess I would leave things pretty much the way they are.

Kevin Sherry is now famous because he is appearing in the "Got Mustard Campaign" He is also famous for being the treasurer of the Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association (DRYA) who are conductiing their winter series of sailing seminars at various Yacht Clubs in the area (see Wednesday's event)
So when you see or contact Kevin be sure to tell him you've seen him in the "Got Mustard" campaign. You can see the other hundreds of people by clicking on the underlined words above.
So many people have volunteered to participate that we have found it necessary to change the way the slide show runs so that people can browse rather than wait to see their photo with the "digital mustard" on their upper lip. One can replace the phrase in the section box with their first name and deleting any other text in the box. Then only the slides that contain that name are displayed.
If you had your photo taken and can't find it in the slide show please send us an email. If you would like to send a photo to be included, send it to email@example.com. We will supply the "digital mustard".

Dear Peggy Jo
I went to a Meet & Greet Dinner the night before Valentines' day. There was reserved table for the group and it was all taken. So I had to sit at another table by myself and the hostess knew about it. No one did anything to make room plus another person came and left. I cannot believe I was treated that way because they knew both of us. It was not even noticed when I left the place.
If you see me at any of these events please come over to me and tell me you are newbe. Even if I'm new at any of them we'll go aroud together and meet

Sorry to hear about Jan Bassil's passing I remember talking to her at a Bahama Breeze gathering and another event about caregiving and I hope I was of some help
I really liked her and could relate to what she was going through. She will be in my thoughts and prayers! Thanks for posting this in your newsletterJ
I read with interest the letter from 'D' who was ignored at a club function at a Valentines party. I went to a new club some years ago and got the same treatment. I was a stranger in the group and did not know anyone. I was totally ignored even when approaching a group and standing as near to the conversations as possible. However, I felt that it was just a dynamic of group behavior and I decided to continue going to the club meetings anyway. I was justly rewarded as the group turned out to be fantastic and I made many dear friends. Many in the group found their life partners and there were many marriages within the membership. I could not feel more fond of people than I am of this group. The group is the T-Bird Ski Club. I can only give 'D' a dose of encouragement and ask her to hang in there.
Thank you so much for your response.
I would love to put his in the newsletter for encouragement if you don't mind.
You have my permission to put it in your wonderful newsletter.
Just a little anecdote for you.
A man was entering Athens when he came upon Socrates. He asked Socrates what
the people were like in Athens. Socrates returned the question to the man as
Socrates was known to do and asked the man what the people were like where he
came from. The man responded, "Oh they were not friendly at all. They were
liars, cheats, and thieves." Socrates responded, "You would find that the people
from Athens would be pretty much the same."
A while later another man came
across Socrates. He posed much the same question to Socrates. Socrates once again
turned the question around asking the man what the people were like where he
came from. The man responded, "Oh they were the most wonderful people you could
imagine. They were caring, giving, loving." Socrates responded to the second
man, "You would find the people of Athens to be pretty much the same."
I love it and of course I agree with it. Thank you --- perfect for the newsletter

SAT 2009-03-21 For the third year in a row, we're doing it again. This is a chance for you to meet old friends, and make new ones, enjoy great music, dance, and have fun - all for a good cause. Those of you who came the last two years remember how much fun this is, and you felt good at the same time, knowing that all proceeds go to our American Cancer Society Relay for Life team's fund raising effort. Bring your date, or come alone and meet someone new there. start at 7:00 and end at 1:00 at Barnstormer Banquet Center (9411 E M-36, Whitmore Lake, MI). We'll have two ballrooms, with a DJ in one, and a live band in the other; it's like two great parties under one roof, and you can mingle between the two all evening long. Help us blow the top of our efforts the last two years, and buy your tickets early: $20 in advance, or $30 at-the-door so don't wait. Get your tickets on line at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=14419&team_id=400293 (click the Donate link then click on Enter an Amount equal to $20 per ticket, One Time Gift, your name (or simply Victory Party in the Recognition Name field, and finally, a note to me telling me your name, email, and number of tickets you bought. The rest is simple). Or mail your check, payable to The American Cancer Society, to PO Box158, Hamburg, MI 48139. Questions? Call Joe at 810-923-1567
Thanks. . .Joe
