Hearst Magazine President at Inforum

Cathie Black and Peggy Jo

Cathie Black, The president of Hearst Magazines ( in the photo from left to right are Leslie Herrick, Communications Manager of Inforum, Cathie Black and Peggy Jo), was the speaker at the AdCraft and Inforum luncheon meeting held at the San Marino club on Thursday February 28, 2008.

Black began her career at Ms Magazine with Gloria Stenem. She later became New York Magazine's first female publisher. Following that she served as publisher of USA TODAY. Since 1996 Black has been president of Hearst Magazines where she led the successful launch of O, Oprah Winfrey's Magazine.

Well, what can I say about Cathie Black,
other than that
she’s a charming, attractive, bright, articulate,   successful woman with a sense of humor. And that you should have been with me at the InForum - A Professional Women's Alliance luncheon and presentation last Thursday. It was terrific. Lucky for you, you can still find out what she has to say on such subjects as:
    * Don't try to communicate through hints or double meaning.
    * Focus on being respected rather than being liked.
    * Beware the fine line between humor and sarcasm.
    * Focus on solutions, not problems.
    * Lead with affection (but don't call it that in the office).
    * Treat people fairly.

From our readers:

Hi Peggy Jo..

My dad (Joe Bulone) is going to have surgery this Monday,
March 3rd for the removal of his left kidney due to cancer in it.  Please ask your readers to pray for
a positive outcome for all involved.  We are happy with the surgeon he's got, and
The hopital is Beaumont in Royal Oak which is one of the best for this situation

We will be gone and off e-mail for 5 days, and look forward to telling you the
Good news that things went well.

Thanks for all the support and friendship

Love Dave and Maria Kujat (Saxappeal)

Hi,
I suggest a rewording of your credo under your "Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter" masthead to create more clarity and a less awkwardly worded subhead:
Cut the redundant "A Newletter to" part as it is already clear that it is a newletter from the masthead and use a participle to begin the subhead---suggested rewording follows:
"Encouraging singles and couples to embrace life and be active in ways that spiritually, physically, and mentally promote good health"  My rewording would eliminate the dangling "which" clause at the end of the credo and reduce the word count.  I am hopefully following Pascal's idea:  "The reason this letter is so long is that I did not have time to make it shorter."
Keep up the wonderful service to your online readers.

John

Dear John,
I really appreciate your input and I'm stirred up as I contemplate your
suggestions. While I think I understand what you are
saying, I 'm not sure it is saying what I'm meaning.
In thought. Thank you again for taking the time to critique our eNewsletter.
Peggy Jo
P. S.Anyone else care to comment.

Dear Peggy Jo,

I had sent you an email about the jazz fund raiser for mosquito bed nets for the Congo.

I'm a grad student, and this project grew out of my work with UNA-DRC (United Nations Assoc. of Dem Rep of Congo).  UNAs are different from UN orgs in that they are associations of people, not government officials.

I've been working relentlessly on the bed net project since December.

All concert proceeds would go for the nets - no middle management fees. (UNA-DRC is funded by donations - it's not a government organization.)  So, I'm unable to advertise this event without the help of agencies like yours.

If you would look at the website and do some reading, and then had questions, I would be pleased to answer them.

http://www.TheCongoCause.org

I'm pretty much pleading for some help to get the jazz event advertised.  All the musicians are donating their time.  (Cliff Monear, Barbara Ware, George Benson, Nick Calandro, Sean Dobbins, and Nicole New.)

Thank you,

Diane Western

Hello Peggy Jo:

Just a quick note to thank you so very much for your thoughtfulness!  I received your postcard
from your "Send Out Card" program.  I am familiar with this program.  I have a friend in Phoenix Arizona that became
involved with it. I apologize for the delay in my writing to you with a response
to your card as I have been traveling quite a bit since the first of the year.

In the near future I would love to get together with you and tell you all about some of what I am doing these days.  I am in
the process of obtaining a Professional Coaching Credential from the Coaches Training Institute and I will be offering workshops
and seminars in different arenas especially to women in Leadership roles and in the wellness industry - just to name a few.  The name of my new company is The Institute of Empowerment.

I am so looking forward to connecting with you in the near future.  Until then----NAMASTE!(I bow to you)

Racing Rules of Sailing Sailboat racing is governed by a set of rules called the Racing Rules of Sailing. These rules apply to the sport worldwide, and some of them are baffling. But this seminar concentrates on only those rules that the newer sailor needs to know to enjoy sailboat racing safely. This informative and entertaining seminar again will be led by Ted Everingham, an International Judge, a US SAILING-certified Umpire and Senior Judge and the immediate past chair of the US SAILING Judges Committee.
The DRYA seminars are developed with the novice and recreational sailor in mind. These weekly Wednesday night seminars are designed to introduce the sport of sailing to non-sailors and to broaden the knowledge of newer sailors. They are FREE and open to the public. One need not belong to a club or the DRYA to attend. All seminars start at 7:00pm. Jazz Vespers

SUN 2008-03-09
Jazz Vespers offered in an Ecumenical, Historical and Educational Environment Newly created Ecumenical Orchestra features world-acclaimed artists
Ecumenical Theological Seminary (ETS) is hosting its first ever Jazz Vespers, a concert worship service. A brief tour highlighting exquisite architectural and artistic treasures of the 117-year-old Sanctuary will be held at 5:15 p.m. preceding the concert.

The free worship service in jazz is open to the public and features Detroit's world-acclaimed musicians in the newly created Ecumenical Orchestra:
Don Mayberry (bass)
Spencer Barefield (guitar)
Sean Dobbins (drums)
Kevin Grenier (piano)
John Trudell (trumpet)
and Kate Patterson (vocals).

Selections will include such diverse composers as Billy Strayhorn, Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern and others. This event is co-sponsored by Creative Arts Collective.

The Jazz Vespers service will be a combination of scripture readings and jazz songs in tribute to the traditional "call and response" format in which jazz originated. Jazz, once depicted as "the musical incense that collects and carries the prayers of a people," has origins in the slave churches of America. Jazz Vespers is a meeting in a sacred space where the music and the spirit are honored and celebrated together.

It is fitting to hold such a historically sacred tradition as Jazz Vespers at ETS which is located in what was Detroit's oldest protestant church, First Presbyterian Church, currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1891, this magnificent Romanesque church is filled with Tiffany stained glass windows, Pewabic tile, and ornate stenciled motifs. The original congregation helped found Harper Hospital and its first pastor, John Monteith, was instrumental in establishing an educational institution which eventually became the University of Michigan.

Ecumenical Theological Seminary is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. It offers a Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, and Doctor of Ministry degree as well as an Urban Ministry Diploma program. ETS is known for bringing together students from all different faith traditions as well as from widely diverse racial, socio-economic, and geographical backgrounds to transcend alienation and fragmentation as they seek to understand the meaning of God's Word in their lives and in the congregations they serve. ETS alumni are leaders of many of Detroit metropolitan area's communities of faith, helping to shape the future of the 21st century Church.

ETS is committed to making a difference in its Detroit community by presenting meaningful events and outreach services. Last October 21, 2007, ETS hosted a rare concert with famed opera soprano Jessye Norman at the Detroit Opera Theatre. The Seminary's ongoing "Everyone Eats" program provides approximately 300 hot meals to Detroit's homeless and hungry each Wednesday.

Jazz Vespers began in New York City in 1961 when the late Reverend John Garcia Gensel started an evening service at St. Peters Lutheran Church. It was designed for those musicians who couldn't make it to Sunday morning service after playing late Saturday night gigs. He invited them to perform "a worship service by and for jazz musicians" the public is invited. The legendary "Duke" Ellington became a frequent worshiper - he called Pastor Gensel "the shepherd who watches over the night flock". Duke's famous tune "Shepherd of the Night Flock" has been widely recorded and performed. Since then, Jazz Vespers Services have become popular across the country.

For more information, contact Ms. Lydia Holmes at 313-831-5200, ext. 209 or visit ETS website www.etseminary.edu. Free will donations will be accepted.

inForum- A Professional Women's Alliance

THU 2008-03-13
We often let sleep take a low position in our list of priorities. Many women suffer from sleep disorders and never seek a professional's care when the treatments available are simple and usually require no medication at all.

Dr Barbara Fisher

Find out how you can beat these odds and snooze better so you don't lose at work or home during a mini-sleep workshop presented by medically acclaimed Dr. Barbara Fisher, neuropsychologist. (Registration includes hors d'oeuvre s and wine.)

This event is presented in partnership with The Community House "Influential Women Series."

Twelve million people have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, heart problems and sleep deprivation. An estimated 40 to 50% of those individuals diagnosed with congestive heart failure suffer from a sleep disordered breathing problem; effective treatment is estimated to negate 12,600 vascular events in men per year in the United States.

Dr. Fisher will teach you how to wake up feeling relaxed and refreshed without medication.

Barbara Fisher, Ph.D., is the author of numerous books and articles and speaks extensively throughout the U.S. on sleep disorders and other disorders. She is the founder and managing director of the United Psychological Services, a multidisciplinary clinic that provides testing and diagnosis and support for individusals with a number of neuropshchological distorders. Stagecrafters "Decorating the Throne"

THU 2008-03-20
"Decorating The Throne" Stagecrafters will dive deeply into a fundraising event that will bowl you over. Decorating the Throne will have guests up out of their seats as they peruse and bid on one-of-a-kind artful toilet seats in Clawson’s lifestyle destination store, Leon and Lulu.

What is Urinetown-The Musical about anyway? Book by Greg Kotis Lyrics by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann Music by Mark Hollmann This darkly hilarious musical satire uses an absurd premise – a devastating drought has put control of all toilets into the hands of a corrupt corporation – to spoof Broadway plots and conventions. The evil CEO of Urine Good Company, Inc., has the police and the politicians in his pocket, but they won’t be able to stop our idealistic young hero and heroine as they lead the poorest citizens in a revolution against the anarchy of pay toilets. Hailed as one of the most original musicals to hit the scene in decades, you have never experienced anything like the Tony Award-winning Urinetown – The Musical. In keeping with Urinetown’s comical theme, we have flushed away all tones of seriousness for this event and expect to receive more than 20 unique toilet seats (some functional, some decorative only) for an auction people will be talking about for years. All proceeds from these chic commode toppers will benefit Stagecrafters - your community theatre.

Starts at 6:00 PM. Price is $20.Location: Leon & Lulu. 96 W. 14 Mile Rd., Lawson, MI. 48017 Just west of Livernois .
