The U.S. Coast Guard

is warning those recreating on the water this weekend that despite the unseasonably warm temperatures across the region, water temperatures are still dangerously cold.
"Mariners, who may be surprised to learn that 'cold water' is technically defined as any water colder than 70 degrees Fahrenheit, need to continue to be cautious of the risks of drowning and hypothermia," said Capt. Steve Torpey, chief of response for the 9th Coast Guard District, which includes Detroit.
The 9th Coast Guard District recently performed a number of search and rescues for swimmers.
On Wednesday morning a U.S. Coast Guard boat crew from Belle Isle rescued a 46-year-old woman from the Detroit River near Belle Isle. She was hypothermic and taken to a local hospital for treatment. The air temperature was 49 degrees, but the water temperature in the area was 36 degrees, which officials say is cold enough to cause hypothermia in a short period of time.
Jenny Birmelin, of Farmington Hills, is an avid swimmer who says it takes preparation to swim in cold water. Last August Birmelin swam the English Channel.
"People don't understand you have to acclimate to those temperatures," she said. "It was a slow process. The 83 degrees in pools, it's a completely different thing."
On Saturday, Birmelin went to Trout Lake in the Island Lake Recreation Area in Brighton. She said she put her thermometer in the water and got a reading of 56 degrees.
"It was freezing," she said. "I got in up to my knees. I have to get used this again."
It can take less than 10 minutes for a person to lose the use of their fingers, arms and legs in cold water as hypothermia sets in, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Those without life jackets risk drowning.
"You don't' realize it's coming," Birmelin said of hypothermia. "You don't know you have it. You could be swimming around in circles.

BEING THANKFUL

A Rabbi said to a precocious six-year-old boy, "So your mother says your prayers for you each night? That's very commendable. What does she say?"

The little boy replied, "Thank God he's in bed!"

SAY A PRAYER

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother's house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served.

When Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away "Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer." said his mother. "I don't need to," the boy replied.. "Of course, you do "his mother insisted. "We always say a prayer before eating at our house."

"That's at our house." Johnny explained. "But this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook.

76 Trombones

This is perhaps the most amazing performance with large vocal group ever seen. Be sure to watch to the end--some amazing stage tricks with such a large group, too. The choral work is amazingly crisp and words so clear for a group this size. The choreography is really great too. Good surprise ending too. In Anaheim July 4th, 2009, a performance by the Ambassadors of Harmony from St. Charles (Metropolitan, St. Louis), Missouri. They scored a 100 out of a 100 for this and probably would have been given more if that was possible.

" A loving relationship is one in which the loved one is free to be himself - to laugh with me, but never at me; to cry with me, but never because of me; to love life, to love himself, to love being loved. Such a relationship is based upon freedom and can never grow in a jealous heart. - Leo Buscaglia
