" For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle(dove) is heard in our land."

Opening Day is just one week away!

Todd Jones

With the addition of three star quality players (Miguel Carbera, Dontrelle Willis and Edgar Renteria) during the off-season, there is much anticipation for the beginning of the 2008 regular season and expectations are high.

The 2006 season was a complete surprise when the Tigers went all the way to the "World Series" . With the strengthening of the team after the 2006 season, hopes were high for a "World Champion Title" in 2007 but the team fell short.

Much has been written about the heralded newcomers but little about the players that paved the way and endured the dark days of the Tigers. One such is Todd Jones (in the photo) who is returning to Detroit for the 2008 Season.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Todd Barton Jones (born April 24, in Marietta, Georgia is a relief pitcher in who plays with the Detroit Tigers. He bats left-handed and throws right-handed. He has been an effective middle reliever for a variety of teams, and he has had an up-and-down career as a closer. He is known for his distinctive moustache. On September 16, 2007, Jones became the 21st member of the 300-save club, tying Bruce Sutter. His nickname, "Rollercoaster," given to him by Tigers Hall of Fame radio announcer Ernie Harwell, comes from his penchant for putting lots of runners on base with the game on the line yet still managing to get the save — an emotional "rollercoaster" for those watching the game.

Jones is a finesse pitcher and shows good durability. In every year since the strike-shortened 1994 season, he has pitched in at least 51 games. On May 21, 2006, he became the Detroit Tigers' all-time leader in saves, passing Mike Henneman.

Jones is a devout Christian, and is known for using Contemporary Christian music when entering from the bullpen. During the 2006 playoffs he entered to "Last One Standing" by MercyMe.[4]

Since 2002, Jones has been writing a weekly column, "The Closer," for The Sporting News and Jones was on the cover of the baseball preview issue with the caption "Don't Tell columnist Todd Jones but (Beware of The Tigers)".

Singing Hot Dog Man adds flavor

Charley MarcuseIn a wonderful article published in the Detroit Free Press on page 6D of the Sunday August 26, 2007 edition, Todd Jones, the "closer" for the Detroit Tigers wrote an article about Charley Marcuse.

He recounted his and Charley's history starting back at the old Tiger Stadium and bringing it up to date.

Part of the article is here:
Ever go to a Tigers game and hear opera music off in the distance between innings? Well I have.

I first heard it at Tiger Stadium. Charley Marcuse, a.k.a. the Singing Hot Dog Man, would be belting out opera as he was selling hot dogs during another losing season at Michigan and Trumbull.

Before the final weekend at Tiger Stadium, there were thousands of empty seats and you could hear operatic hot dog inquiries all the time. Charley would be there slinging the best dog this side of Dodger Stadium, and if you were real nice, he'd belt out opera right in the middle of the game.

From our readers:

Hi Peggy Jo,

I had a great time DJ'ing the Victory Party.  You were a great crowd and filled the dance floor.  I am looking forward to doing it again.  My only regret is that I could not showcase my light system. Next time I will bring a light system that I can get up the stairs.

I am availabe to DJ more events this summer.

HI Peggy Jo

.  I just flew in from Florida (boy, are my arms tired), so I didn’t get to look at your newsletter until today.  Thanks for the great promotion of our second annual “Victory Party – A Celebration of Life” at Barnstormer Banquet Center in Whitmore Lake.  Last year, we had a blast with 350 mostly single friends, dancing, eating and laughing our way to raising over $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.  This year’s program is even better, and we’re all looking forward to a fun night.  I hope you’ll be able to join us in having fun for a great cause.  Thanks again for you support.

Urinetown - The Musical This darkly hilarious musical satire uses an absurd premise – a devastating drought that has put control of all toilets into the hands of a corrupt corporation – to spoof Broadway plots and conventions. The evil CEO of Urine Good Company, Inc. has the police and the politicians in his pocket, but they won’t be able to stop our idealistic young hero and heroine as they lead the poorest citizens in a revolution against the anarchy of pay toilets. Hailed as one of the most original musicals to hit the scene in decades, you’ve never experienced anything like the Tony Award-winning Urinetown.

Jazz Benefit The Congo Cause Mosquito Bed Nets

SUN 2008-03-30
Cliff Monear & Friends perform a Jazz Benefit for Mosquito Bed Nets to prevent malaria near the eastern border of Congo.
Detroit's finest jazz artists will perform at a benefit jazz concert hosted by the Birmingham Community House, under the direction of

Tickets are $25 and include the concert and hors d'oeuvres. A cash bar will be available and a silent auction will be held.

The Performers Include:
Cliff Monear - Piano
Nick Calandro - Bass
Sean Dobbins - Drums
Barbara Ware - Vocals
Nicole New - Vocals
George Benson - Saxophones

Up to the minute jazz concert details are available at:

All concert proceeds will go towards mosquito bed nets to be distributed for free near the eastern border area of Congo where over 600,000 people are internally displaced due to rebel conflicts. Journalists are describing eastern Congo as being 20 times worse than Darfur -- and the worse genocide since World War II.

Special Guest From Congo: Dr. Cissa Wa Numbe director of the United Nations Association of the Dem. Rep. of Congo (UNA-DRC) will be attending the Jazz Concert Benefit and share briefly about the Congo. Dr. Cissa was twice jailed as a prisoner of conscience under previous governments in Congo. He was freed through efforts of UN organizations. Dr. Cissa has enjoyed freedom since 2000 and works relentlessly for human rights, peace, health, and freedom in the Congo. The Congo had its first democratic election in 2006. Please join us to meet and talk with Dr. Cissa, and surround him with our support and Detroit generosity!

On the website: you can find video clips and articles about the eastern border of Congo when Ann Curry, NBC News, visited mid-February, and from Anderson Cooper (CNN/CBS 60 Minutes) who visited in January. This concert is a local grass roots effort. We are honored to have such an awesome collection of jazz artists. Please join us for this memorable event in support of this great need!!!
