Letters from our readers

From Michael Copado:

My friend Joseph Michnuk, who if you don't know worked for the Tiger's organization, and rode with Sparky Anderson in the 84 Tiger's victory parade, and a member of the Navin Field Grounds Crew has written a very articulate and heartfelt piece on the PAL redevelopment of the old Tiger's Stadium grounds, and his belief in the importance of preserving the historic integrity of the property, including keeping the original playing service.

From Joseph Michnuk

I appreciate Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) for helping generations of Motor City Kids, especially the Youth Baseball Program and improvements made to fields @ Patton Park on Detroit's Southwest Side where I played as a child.

Children of Detroit and every city in America are spending more time at their computers than outside. They need and deserve programs that PAL has created to allow them to play outdoors more often.

I believe Detroit PAL has the unique opportunity to honor is core mission of "Putting Kids First" while preserving the greatest sporting legacy of Motown in the process. Building their new Headquarters next to Historic Navin Field, Briggs Stadium and Tiger Stadium is a match made in Baseball Heaven. I'm certain that Sparky Anderson & Ernie Harwell are smiling about that.

As everyone probably knows, the Original Flagpole, Dirt Infield and Grass Playing Surface at Michigan & Trumbull remains in its entirety as it 1st appeared on Opening Day in April 1912. Although folks miss those Stadiums, they have flocked to this site by the thousands over the past five Summers. Grandfathers and Grandmothers, Uncles and Aunts have brought children of all ages to The Corner to visit, tell stories, share memories, toss a ball and run the bases. PAL Kids deserve this exact same experience.

Many studies have demonstrated that AstroTurf does not provide the cost effectiveness that its proponents would like us to believe. A Forbes Magazine Article from 2014 entitled "How taxpayers get fooled on the cost of an artificial turf field" and a University of Missouri Study stating "Synthetic turf grass costs more, a lot more" are just two examples of why natural grass is better.

Personally, I think saving this Historic Field in cooperation with PAL Kids is the most prudent use of time and resources. Let's show children how to maintain the dirt and grass field firsthand. What could be more rewarding than working shoulder-to-shoulder mentoring youngsters with rakes in our collective hands? I've learned many valuable lessons about Life these past five Summers with the Navin Field Grounds Crew and passing building character in young people to PAL Kids would be our pleasure.

Finally, we've witnessed hundreds of folks leave the cremated remains of loved ones at Home Plate, the Pitchers Mound and at various places on the Queen of Diamonds. In fact, 1968 World Series MVP Mickey Lolich stopped by last Summer during a Youth Baseball Event and told us a story of a Clubhouse Pet buried near the Flagpole. I strongly suggest we honor these memories by maintaining the current configuration in its natural state. I believe that's the way God planned it.

Sincerely, Joe Michnuk

Navin Field

With God's help we will do mighty things, for he will trample down our foes."

SAT 2015-04-18

Police & Fire to Drop Puck for 'Guns & Hoses' Charity Hockey Game

The hockey teams of the Royal Oak Police and Fire departments are set to square-off in the fifth-annual Royal Oak 'Guns & Hoses' Charity Hockey Game on Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the John Lindell Ice Arena in Royal Oak. Proceeds from this year's game will directly benefit disabled military veterans throughout Metro Detroit.

Based out of Royal Oak, the Michigan Warriors Hockey Program gives disabled Veterans a no-cost opportunity to get onto the ice. The nonprofit organization provides an educational and developmental atmosphere for Veterans of all skill levels for both stand-up and sled hockey. The program runs completely on donations and sponsorships.

"We're honored by the opportunity to support our military veterans. These men and women have dedicated their lives to serving our nation and in some cases, suffered either long-term physical or mental wounds while doing so. It is our job as Americans to take care of these men and women and this game serves as a means to do just that, said Patrick Stanton, a sergeant with the Royal Oak Police Department and the Guns & Hoses event co-founder.

Proceeds generated from the 'Guns & Hoses' hockey game will be used to support new and existing veterans with hockey equipment, ice time, lessons and games against teams throughout the area, Stanton said.

"As a Veteran of the U.S. Army, I couldn't be prouder of this year's beneficiary. The response to this year's event has been wonderful and we look forward to a fun and successful evening for everyone," said Stanton.

"The Michigan Warriors Hockey Program is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide disabled Veterans the opportunity to live a healthy, active lifestyle and improve their quality of life through the sport of ice hockey," said Josh Krajewski, a US Army Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. Krajewski is also the Founder and President of the program.

The program was started by military Veterans for military Veterans with immeasurable help from Carol Schwanger, the Disabled Section of USA Hockey, and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association, Krajewski said.

"We have all faced challenging adversities while in the military and coming back home to civilian life can be a daunting task. The Michigan Warriors Hockey Program is here to ease that transition by providing the camaraderie of the military brotherhood as well as a fun and challenging atmosphere to stay active,"Krajewski said.

Tickets: Game tickets are $10.00 each and can be purchased in advance by visiting the Royal Oak Police Department or any Royal Oak Fire Department station. Tickets can also be purchased at the John Lindell Ice Arena in Royal Oak on the day of the game.

National Day of Prayer

THU 2015-05-07

Once again we will be gathering to observe the National Day Of Prayer at Shain Park in downtown Birmingham.

The National Day of Prayer is far more than a day to gather and pray. it is truly part of a much larger prayer movement that is changing the conditions of our culture.

ndp The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress' proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

BE THERE! 11:45am
From 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.. Location: Shain Park. Bates and Merrill, Birmingham, Mi.
Starts at 11:45 AM.. Location: Shain Park. Bates and Merrill, Birmingham, Mi.
