Thoughts About Motherhood

(from an email I received)

Mother's Day no 1

Should I Retract my Prediction???

Before the baseball season started, I predicted that the Tigers would "go all the way" this year. Do you think this jinxed the team? What would happen if I reversed the prediction? Would retracting the prediction lift the jinx?

Over 450 Attended Inforum Health Care Meeting.

Addressing the topic of the "Future of the U.S. Health Care System," a panel of nationally and internationally recognized experts kept the rapt attention of more than 450 business professionals who attended Friday's 46th Annual Meeting of Inforum, held at the Troy Marriott. Inforum is one of the country's largest and most prestigious business organizations for women.

Distinguished panelists included Dr. Nicholas Barr, professor of Public Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science; Kate Kohn-Parrott, group director of Integrated Health Care and Disability for Chrysler Corporation; Nancy Schlichting, president and CEO of Henry Ford Health System; and Cathy Tripp, national leader of Consumerism for Watson Wyatt Worldwide.

Panelists discussed health care issues specific to their areas of expertise and then took questions from the audience.

Dr. Barr pointed to three primary problems facing health finance in the United States including the reliance on actuarial insurance, a mechanism that works well for automotive and property insurance, but with regard to health care, leads to gaps in coverage, unequal access and exploding costs. Though Dr. Barr was clear not to promote the British model of health care as the solution to the U.S. health care system, he noted that other advanced countries offer a range of less imperfect systems that include a combination of public and/or private finance along with public or private health care delivery.

Dr. Barr concluded that the economics of health care were not the greatest challenge for the U.S., rather the politics. "It's an election year-I wish you well," he said.

Representing the views of a major health care provider, Nancy Schlichting addressed the importance of universal access to health care, issues about gaps in quality and how health care dollars are being spent. She shared a particular area of concern regarding the need for more primary care physicians, who include an increasing number of women, and whose numbers may be reduced if they are not adequately rewarded. On behalf of Henry Ford Health System, Schlichting highlighted its many partnerships in education and research that are being undertaken to improve health care locally.

Cathy Tripp reported on recent research findings and surveys conducted with employers and employees with regard to health care plans and benefits. She pointed out that companies that have been able to engage employees in consumer directed health plans and participate in a variety of wellness programs have seen health care costs trending down. Employee concerns relate more to what health care costs are covered under various insurance plans, which plan to choose and how to cover out of pocket expenses. Tripp emphasized the need for employers to simplify the language and better communicate with employees and their spouses, who many times make the health care decisions.

Citing that most Americans receive health care coverage through their employers, Kate Kohn-Parrott presented a business perspective and cited specific initiatives of Chrysler Corporation to address the rising costs of health care. She pointed out some of the primary causes that lead to increased health care costs in the United States, and the company's legacy costs for retirees' health care.

Chrysler has initiated an aggressive strategy to attack rising health care costs and adopted the slogan "Healthy People Drive Our Future!" Her final comments encouraged the audience to know what we're paying for, select a system based on value and take personal responsibility.

Karla Hall, chair of the Inforum Board of Directors and vice president of DTE Energy Foundation, concluded the meeting by thanking the event sponsors, Lee Hecht Harrison and Michigan Business Review. She also gave each presenter a tile with the Inforum logo made by Detroit's historic Pubic Pottery.

Inforum is one of the largest and most prestigious business forums for women in the nation, with more than 2,000 members from a broad cross-section of Michigan's business community. The mission of the organization is to strengthen the business environment by creating opportunities for women to lead and succeed. Programs include events featuring nationally recognized speakers, leadership development workshops, and social networking groups. Founded as the Women's Economic Club in 1962 in Detroit, Inforum now has affiliates in Grand Rapids and Lansing, Michigan.
