Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.

Memorial Day

We hope that you take the time to link to a very moving presentation that captures the essence of Memorial Day.. It is on "Youtube" and you can get to it by clicking here. Soldiers The following information concerning Memorial Day was gathered from various sources.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920).

While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868.

It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Letters From our Readers

Dear Peggy Jo,
I receive the New Letter every week and enjoy and participate in some of the activities. Back in April there was a Happy Hour at Genopolis on the west side of town. Would it be possible to get a copy or just the front page (maybe May issue) sent to me? I was in the picture and accidentally deleted it. It was a first for me and I am so sad that I lost the picture.

Thank you in advance for your efforts and thank you for all the work you put into the weekly newsletter.

T
Response: I hope you found it. It was in the March 19, issue.

Dear Peggy Jo,
In case you would like to advertise a free concert, here's one for you. On the Sunday before Memorial day the Birmingham Concert Band, under the direction of Grant Hoemke, always does an outdoor patriotic concert at White Chapel cemetery at 3:00 pm. This year the Sunday before Memorial day is May 27th. admission is free.

621 West Long Lake Rd (at Crooks) (248) 362-7670 The concert is always weather permitting, but we haven't been rained out very often. Bring a lawn chair or use the ones that are there. There are a couple of patriotic singalongs with the band, including a salute to both active and retired service people. We sing all the service anthems and salute the service people and their families. It always brings a lump to your throat and a warmth to your heart. I am the Soloist and Master of ceremonies, and the more people we have there,. the better the band (and I) like it. It really is a wonderful event, and a great way to spend some time Memorial day weekend.
