At the Royal Oak Farmer's Market last Saturday I tried a new offering from Charley The Singing Hotdog Man. It's chocolate candy made with a touch of Charley's mustard. The result is a delightful blend of sweet and tangy. I recommend it!

Ferndale Memorial Day Parade
Festivals and Community Events

MON 2013-05-27

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, the 95th annual observance in honor of those who gave their all will take place in Ferndale.

Ferndale's observance is the oldest continuous Memorial Day parade in the state of Michigan. A wide variety of community organizations and civic associations march in the parade. Once again, members of Michigan's Fallen will participate to commemorate service members who have lost their lives during current military engagements.

The parade gets under way at 10 a.m. on Livernois, just north of West Nine Mile. It concludes with a program held at the city's Memorial Mall, which is located on Livernois, two blocks south of West Nine Mile Road.

The program includes the reading of the "Honor Roll," those members of the military who died since Memorial Day 2012. Also, children 12 years and under are encouraged to decorate their bicycles patriotically and ride them in the parade. There will be a drawing for prizes at the end of the parade. Meet at Maplehurst West of Livernois.

This year, the parade marshal is Ferndale resident and former U.S. Army Spc. Tom Ducharme, who received a Purple Heart last year, 42 years after being wounded in Vietnam.

Memorial Day Parade
Festivals and Community Events

MON 2013-05-27

The Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 27th, beginning at 9:00 am. The parade route starts at South Main Street and Harrison, heading North to 2nd Street, then East to the Veteran's Memorial Plaza where the Annual Memorial Service will be held.

Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade or volunteer to help out, are encouraged to contact the Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade Committee at royaloakmemorialday@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/royaloakmemorialdayparade for more information.

The Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade Committee was formed in the Fall of 2008, comprised of 10 people dedicated to ensure the continuance of the high quality of our Royal Oak parade that has been held for more than 4 decades to honor the dedication of all of our Military Forces, both past & present.

big flag

Planning for parade is a year-round task. The Committee meets monthly, and strives to improve the parade each year, while maintaining the high standards that are expected of such a premier event dedicated to honoring our veterans so that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

One of the Committee's primary goals is to reach out to veterans of all ages and to those who wish to show their respect to our veterans. This is one of the most prestigious parades held in Michigan and the high standards of this parade have held true for decades. By reaching out to the younger generations and teaching them why we need to continue to honor our Veterans with the respect and dignity the Committee is dedicated to keeping this a solemn event for generations to come.
