Memorial Day History

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Resurrecting yet another name from Detroit's dining past

MON 2011-05-30
Resurrecting yet another name from Detroit's dining past, restaurateur Joe Vicari says he will open a new version of Brownie's on the Lake this Memorial Day weekend. Brownie's - known for its water views and slips for Lake St. Clair boaters - closed 14 years ago. The new Brownie's will be in the old Jack's Waterfront Restaurant at 24214 E. Jefferson in St. Clair Shores, now being renovated under the direction of Ron & Roman architects in Birmingham. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner daily and will include space for indoor and outdoor dining, entertainment, dancing, and "the largest docking area of any metro Detroit restaurant," said Vicari, who founded the Andiamo Restaurant Group. The menu will feature a Brownie Burger - the signature item of the old restaurant - but the new version will be made with USDA Prime beef. The menu will be expanded to reflect more modern tastes, featuring fresh fish, salads and pizzas among other items. Vicari is also opening a new version of the long-closed Joe Muer's Seafood Restaurant this September in the Renaissance Center.

" I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day. I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did."

Blackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music. Traditional songs of emigration, sea shanties, lively jigs and reels, and ancient airs combine with some of Ireland's best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people. What makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes, tempos and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments and complement the lead vocal of Richard McMullen with their harmony.
