70 footers in Lake St Clair

The Lake St. Clair water level has risen enough to allow these large sailing ships to once again race there. Scroll down to future events to see the announcement by Bayview Yacht Club.

Something is always going on at the famous corner once the site of Tiger Stadium. This Father's day they will be hosting a special Vintage Base Ball at Navin Field event. Family members who play in clubs from across the State and even Ohio will converge on this historic corner of Michigan and Trumbull to play in a friendly competition of 1860's era ball The Fathers & Grandfathers will be taking on their offspring (both male & female ballists.) Will the "old golds" prevail over the "whippersnappers?" Come out with your own families and find out, and cheer on your favorite generation. (Please share this with your friends and fanily, and help promote this unique event.)

Admission is free. You can donate to get hot dogs and pop and they do have shirts for sale. This is the only source of income for the volunteer group. Bring portable chairs. They do have some picnic tables.

For more information, like "Vintage Base Ball at Navin Field" on Facebook.

The games are the work of The Navin Field Grounds Crew and Michael "Preacher" Copado.

The most noticeable difference between modern and vintage ball is the lack of gloves or protection of any sort. Also balls are pitched underhanded, balls which are caught on one bound or bounce, are considered outs, there is no sliding, bunting,or stealing allowed and rarely are balls and strikes called.

I have seen the glories of art and architecture, and mountain and river; I have seen the sunset on the Jungfrau, and the full moon rise over Mont Blanc; but the fairest vision on which these eyes ever looked was the flag of my country in a foreign land. Beautiful as a flower to those who hate it, terrible as a meteor to those who hate it, it is the symbol of the power and glory, and the honor, of fifty million Americans."

Father's Day- Fathers v. Children Vintage Base Ball Match
Navin Field Grounds Crew

SUN 2014-06-15
Vintage logo

An exhibition of 1860's era base ball featuring fathers v. sons and daughter vintage ballists from across Michigan, Ohio and elsewhere.

For over 100 years family memories were made as countless fathers shared their love of America's pastime with their children at this hallowed corner in Detroit's historic Corktown neighborhood. Make new memories for you family by joining us for this special event.

Bring a picnic lunch, coolers, blankets, and lawnchairs and cheer on these family member players of all different ages as they engage in high spirited and friendly competition. Will age and experience beat youthful energy? Come out and see. Faygo pop and hot dogs will be available.

This match is brought to you by the Navin Field Grounds crew and Michael "Preacher" Copado. Please support the NFGC's effort to keep this historic corner alive. Please support us by liking the "Navin Field Grounds Crew," "Vintage Base Ball at Navin Field" and "Michigan Area Vintage Base Ball" on Facebook.
