Father's Day in United States

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Father's Day celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children. It is on the third Sunday of June.

Father's Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life. Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers. Common Father's Day gifts include sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household maintenance.

Father's Day is a relatively modern holiday, so different families have a range of traditions. These can extend from a simple phone call or greetings card to large parties honoring all of the 'father' figures in a particular extended family. Father figures can include fathers, step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and even other male relatives. In the days and weeks before Father's Day, many schools and Sunday schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their fathers.

Father's Day is not a federal holiday. Organizations, businesses and stores are open or closed, just as they are on any other Sunday in the year. Public transit systems run to their normal Sunday schedules. Restaurants may be busier than usual, as some people take their fathers out for a treat.

There are several events which may have inspired the idea of Father's Day. One of these was the start of the Mother's Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.

A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father's Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again.

Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed for Mother's Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father's Day was held in June was in 1910. Father's Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.

MON 2012-06-11
Description Register at http://meetup.com/Mobile-Monday-Detroit

The mobile gaming landscape is growing at an exponential rate and becoming more complex than ever. Mobile gaming has a stand-alone market, but mobile gaming technology is also being incorporated into branded marketing strategies in rapidly increasing numbers.

On a stand-alone basis, mobile games continually lead the top grossing charts for driving signficant investment and capital. But with the rise in opportunities also comes the rise in competition, and today's mobile games market is no exception.

On the marketing side, savvy brands are incorporating game-like promotional experiences into their mobile mix to encourage customer / potential customer engagement.

This session of Mobile Monday Detroit will focus on today's trends in mobile gaming - from both the stand-alone and marketing perspective.

For those interested in stand-alone mobile gaming, we will review key business models, monetization and marketing strategies. We will also review best practices and what to consider when entering the games market or seeking to grow your mobile games business.

For those interested in utilizing mobile gaming technology as part of a marketing strategy for brands they represent, we will delve into a range of game-types from win-wheels and photo hunts on mobile sites to robust games built in native apps. We will also review case studies across industries, and highlight new opportunities for marketers when bringing mobile gaming into the marketing mix.

American Aesthetic Clyde Burroughs Dinner/Lecture #5
Scarab Club

WED 2012-06-13
Subject: Artist and the Scarab: Marie Zimmermann and the Egyptian Revival Marie Zimmermann (1878-1972) was among the most eclectic and innovative designers of jewelry and metalwork working in the early twentieth century. Her creations in gold, silver, bronze, copper and iron, which were shown twice in 1920s exhibitions at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts and which are included in the collection of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, explore a wide range of approaches to design, celebrating and interrogating traditional methods and experimenting freely with materials, surface, color and applied ornament. Because of the radically diverse and challenging nature of her work, Zimmermann's oeuvre has received little scholarly attention until the recent book The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann (Yale U Press 2011). The book's coauthor, Joseph Cunningham will discuss Marie Zimmermann's explorations of the Egyptian revival style across all aspects of her work including jewelry and a wide range of metalwork and her most famous work the Egyptian Box, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Egyptian and its revival motifs played a central role in design both in America and abroad from about 1870 through the 1930s, due in large measure to the opening of the Suez Canal, attention to Egyptian styles in the design press and pattern books including those by Owen Jones and Christopher Dresser. The string of excavations continually renewed the public's appetite for all things Egyptian, which taste was developed in New York by the quick and determined development of Classical Collections at the Metropolitan and Brooklyn Museums of Art. Marie Zimmermann was deeply impacted by seeing those collections and the popularity of the Egyptian style, but her interest was hardly of the tourist variety. Zimmermann showed throughout her career a deep and abiding love of Egyptian style and ancient imagery and a unique talent for reinterpreting antiquity. Speaker: Joseph Cunningham, Ph.D. Profession: Curatorial Director of American Decorative Art 1900 Foundation Joseph Cunningham, Ph.D., is the Curatorial Director of American Decorative Art 1900 Foundation. He is the author of The Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs (2008), which was awarded the Henry-Russell HitchcockAward by the Victorian Society in America, the Charles F. Montgomery Prize by the Decorative Art Society, and the Henry Allen Moe Prize by the New York State Historical Association. He contributed the essay "Irene Sargent and the Craftsman Ideology" to Gustav Stickley and the American Arts and Crafts Movement (2010) and was awarded the Robert C. Smith Award by the Decorative Art Society for Design is Not Art (2004). Dr. Cunningham previously held the position of Curator and Department Head of Contemporary Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts and has contributed essays on artists Agnes Martin, John Cage and Robert Smithson to Art Criticism.

MSDA Monthly Dance
Michigan Swing Dance Association

SUN 2012-06-17
Every month, the MSDA holds a kick-ass dance, usually on the third Sunday. Our dance is held at the gorgeous Rhythm -n- Shoes Ballroom Dance Studio in Bloomfield Hills. There are lessons at 3 PM and a dance party from 4 to 8 PM. The music is California Mix with East and West Coast Swing, Hustle, Ballroom, Latin and Country and our DJ, Phil Dorroll, takes requests. We throw in a Speed Dating Dance and a Newcomer Mixer just to change things up a bit. A light meal is served, as well as snacks, soft drinks and cake, plus we give away door prizes to people whose tickets are drawn.

For members, the dance is $9 and the lesson is free. For non-members, the lesson is $4 and the dance is $11. If you join the club at the dance, you save $6. .

The MSDA dances are attended by couple and singles alike. For the most part, our members are single and we are always happy to see new members join. The MSDA is like a big, friendly family and we are very comfortable asking each other to dance. In other words, men ask women and women ask men. That's our format. If you have never been to an MSDA dance, your first visit is FREE!!
