Salute to Janet Blair

Red cross relief

Once again Janet Blair and her crew at the Tri-County Business Exchange staged a very classy event at the San Marino Club on June 13, 2013. It was a benefit for the American Red Cross. The crowd was entertained with a dazzling show by professional ballroom dancers, treated to delicious tastes by more than a dozen strolling food stations, provided with a live band for dancing, and given an opportunity to honor some of the Michigan Marathon runners who did not get their afterglow at the Boston Marathon this year due to the bombings.

In the photo at the top is Nancy Smith, who has run in 28 marathons including 13 consecutive Boston Marathons. Ms. Smith is the chairperson of the UEA Staywell Committee. Nancy was one of the many runners present at the event.

Janet, in the photo on the left with Peggy Jo, has organized singles events, through Succesfullysingle.org, business and profesional events through the Tri-County Business Exchange and travel events both local and international over the past years and deserves all of our gratitude for the fabulous job she does. Hurrah Janet, you are awesome!!!

See how a drone works on Lake St. Clair

We are presenting this link again because of it's popularity.

Here is the drone video for those who wondered what was hovering over the sailing race course on Sunday June 2! Great added value from BYC. Thanks to Kerri Barno & Todd Jones for posting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPq-1AOYAOY From Mickey Bennett posted on Facebook.

At the very end you can see the operator bring the drone down to a point where he could reach up and grab it. They are about thirty inches wide and weigh less than ten pounds.

Phantom S800 [editors note: We think that they were using a DJI Phantom S800 Quadcopter. The following link gives more information about these civilian drones} Information here

DJI has a facebook page where you can scroll down to a video which covers many aspects of civilian drones including insurance and provable FAA regulations.

New Web Radio Show

For IT Professionals and other interested people.

Mark Brown

Tune in on Monday from 9-11 PM for the third episode. They have Mark Brown of Brown Staffing Solutions coming in, and the underlying theme of the show will be the importance of networking, getting yourself to events, and why it matters. And there are very few people who exemplify that better than Mark, who has quite literally built a business from coming to their events, making great connections, and hiring people into new jobs.

To listen to this week's show go to http://rawradiox.com prior to 9:00. Then click on the link to "Show Schedules". You should see It in the D (Tech Show) listed under the Mondays subtitle. There are apps available for both Android and the iPhone so that you can listen on your mobile device. There is a link on Raw Radio that will give you instructions on how to download software for any device. Turn down the volume on your speakers because the web casts are very loud. There is also a link to re-plays.

You can read the recap and listen to the first week's episode here: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/5271/it-in-the-d-week1-recap/

You can read the recap and listen to the second week's episode here: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/5302/it-in-the-d-recap-06102013

Hope you can join them Monday night!

Emails From Our Readers

At the Royal Oak Farmer's Market last Saturday I tried a new offering from Charley The Singing Hotdog Man. It's chocolate candy made with a touch of Charley's mustard. The result is a delightful blend of sweet and tangy. I recommend it!

IT in The D: Listen Live
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-06-17
You can listen in a couple of different ways. There's a live stream you can catch via browsers, and there's an app for both Droid and Apple--- ---and yes, it's there for Windows phone users as well--- Once you've got the app loaded, you're going to want to hook in to the Raw Radio X feed: http://tunein.com/radio/Raw-Radio-X-s192773/ You can also hit that link from your browser and listen that way as well. Or you can hit the RawRadioX.com website - http://rawradiox.com/ - and listen to the stream there from your browser. For Droid devices: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tunein.player For Apple devices: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunein-radio/ For Windows devices: http://tunein.com/mobile/windows/ And remember to follow @ITinTheD on Twitter. We'll be using that as the "voice" for the show on that platform. IT in The D also has its own Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD RawRadioX can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/RawRadioX And, of course, our base on Facebook is over at https://www.facebook.com/detroitnet Hope you can join us Monday night from 9pm to 11pm. We're looking forward to it. That's right, starting on Monday, June 3rd---someone is giving us broadcast capabilities. For two hours every week, from 9pm to 11pm, you'll be able to listen to us live on the air---uhhh, on the ethernet? Via wireless? Whatever, it's an internet radio show. You get what I mean. Bob, Dave and Jeff will be in an actual broadcast studio every week doing what they do best -- ranting, babbling, discussing and chatting whatever happens to be on their minds that night. Things that matter to the metro Detroit information technology community. Current events. Beer. Things that suck. Things that are awesome. If you've ever had a conversation with us for more than five minutes, you know it's impossible for us to stay on any one topic for an extended period of time, so this probably won't be much different. Thankfully, we're not going to rely on just ourselves and our random synaptic misfires to keep things moving. We've already lined up some great guests to come join us in-studio over the course of the first few shows to talk about some pretty cool things they're doing here in the area that we think you ought to know more about as well. If Monday nights from 9pm to 11pm aren't all that convenient for you---don't sweat it. It's really not all that convenient for us, either---but the live broadcast is just the starting point. After the live broadcast each week, things will get edited down into coherent tracks and topics from that night into separate broadcast segments as podcasts for streaming whenever you've got the time to listen. And if you've never watched the three of us talk about---well, anything really---then you know we hardly ever fully agree. And the conversations tend to get a little---oh, let's call them "spirited". Which is why the live broadcast is probably going to be more fun to listen to, because "raw" is where the fun is. Thankfully this is an internet broadcast or else we'd likely be shut down.
