Longest Day of the Year
Sunday marked the Summer Solstice and was the day that we had the most daylight this year. From now until December 21, we will be getting less daylight each day.
The Earth's day has increased in length over time. The original length of one day, when the Earth was new about 4.5 billion years ago, was about six hours as determined by computer simulation. It was 21.9 hours 620 million years ago as recorded by rhythmites (alternating layers in sandstone). This phenomenon is due to tides raised by the Moon which slow Earth's rotation. Because of the way the second is defined, the mean length of a day is now about 86,400.002 seconds, and is See tidal acceleration for details.
Fewer Post Office Branches On the Horizon
Over the past ten years, there has been a decrease of nearly 300,000 pieces daily of First-Class Mail being mailed in Detroit. This move would allow the Postal Service to consolidate what have now become redundant processing operations and multiple locations into one state of the art facility. This consolidation will contribute towards the Postal Service’s goal of increasing efficiency and improving productivity while ensuring it remains a viable organization well into the future, providing universal mail service at reasonable rates. A summary of the proposal, the meeting agenda and presentation materials are available on More information from the postal servive here.
This Week's Now Famous Person
Gayle Shields is now famous for appearing in the "Got Mustard Campaign" She is also famous for a gracious hostess and a great salesperson for Charley's BallPark Mustard"
So when you see or contact Gayle be sure to tell her you saw her in the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter. You can see the other hundreds of people by clicking on the underlined words above.
You can browse rather than wait to see a particular photo with the "digital mustard" on the upper lip. One can replace the phrase in the section box with a first name and deleting any other text in the box. Then only the slides that contain that name are displayed.
If you had your photo taken and can't find it in the slide show please send us an email. If you would like to send a photo to be included, send it to email@example.com. We will supply the "digital mustard".

Dear Peggy Jo,
Please share in your newsletter that my mom,
Luella Forbes, had a heart attack and is now
pretty much blind.
I've moved in with her to be
her care giver. Please pray for her and me too.
It's so hard, I don't want to lose her.
Dear Peggy Jo,
Please pass this along to your readers.
Hollywood is Coming to Michigan!
There is an opportunity for everyone!
Please join me on Tuesday, June 23, and / or Thursday, June 25, in learning from noted film industry expert, Bob Brown how we can benefit from Michigan's focus on film! Just click here for the exciting details.
Meet Bob Brown of Purple Rose Films and hear what he has to say to individuals and businesses regarding the Michigan Film Industry and the opportunities that surround it.
Let's get involved!
In the last issue of the PJSN you published a rebuttal to my email from " A concerned Host".
I do not know where "A Concerned Host" got the idea that I was complaing about "feeling" isolated . I share ACH's regard for the volunteers who plan these various gathering for the many clubs that you publicize in your newsletter.
There is a difference between "feeling" isolated and being physically isolated.
My point was, the concept of getting everybody in attendance at one long table in order to make them feel welcome, is false. In fact it does the opposite. This was not to criticize the people putting on the event. I am sure that the do want to make everyone feel welcome. It was meant to give them some insight into the dynamics of the group.
Long tables inhibit mixing. The only people one has access to are the two on each side and possibly two or three people across the table. ACH noted that I at least was able to meet some new people and perhaps the next time I would meet more. the next time. ACH did not comprehend that I might have wanted to meet someone else that was seated somewhere else at the table. Also, I am not in a business that requires meeting a great number of people nor am I running for an office where just meeting new people is an advantage.
"The best thing a host/hostess can do is to have an event at a place where the group can stand and mingle for an hour or so before sitting down to dinner. Once people start sitting down, it's all over. It doesn't matter if there's one big table or ten individual tables."
Is almost right on. Many establishments do not have an extra room for pre dinner mixing. Even if they did smaller table would allow table hopping and continued mixing once the dinner begins.
Long Tables Make it Difficult for the Restaurant: Because the group is sitting at one table the wait staff takes all of the orders and submits them to the kitchen. Most restaurants hire short order cooks. They can fill an order for a table of four in short order and the wait staff can deliver it to the respective table. When they get an order for twenty or thirty meals it requires a different approach. Everyone has to wait un till all orders ready before the wait staff starts delivering the meals.
The billing process is complicated with a large group all sitting at the same table.
I remember going to a restaurant in Windsor where all of the chairs had wheels. The Kitchen was overwhelmed by the unexpected influx of people. We were at three long tables and had to wait a long time for our meals. Someone got the idea that they could stay in their chair and scoot around to meet other people. Very shortly many people followed suit and the wait for the dinners was made enjoyable.
Keep up the good work with your newsletter. I am sorry that more people don't take the time to pass good tidings on. Unfortunately complaints get voiced but compliments are overlooked.
Hi Peggy Jo,
Mingling first and putting oneself out there are good ideas. But, as for seating arrangements, smaller tables instead of one big one sounds best - as long as established people are sensitive to including newcomers when they go to sit down. To aid in this, maybe no one should select a seat until the mingling period is over.
And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable to Him than a whole flock of sparrows."
