More about Drones

Here is a story about the "Burrito Bomber"

We are presenting this link again because of it's popularity.

Here is the drone video for those who wondered what was hovering over the sailing race course on Sunday June 2! Great added value from BYC. Thanks to Kerri Barno & Todd Jones for posting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPq-1AOYAOY From Mickey Bennett posted on Facebook.

At the very end you can see the operator bring the drone down to a point where he could reach up and grab it. They are about thirty inches wide and weigh less than ten pounds.

Phantom S800 [editors note: We think that they were using a DJI Phantom S800 Quadcopter. The following link gives more information about these civilian drones} Information here

DJI has a facebook page where you can scroll down to a video which covers many aspects of civilian drones including insurance and provable FAA regulations.

Don't Be Fooled by Scammers Impersonating Police

Sgt. Mark Thompson of the Michigan State Police advises on what to do if you suspect you are being pulled over by someone posing as a police officer.

Technology is a wonderful thing. When used appropriately it makes our lives better and most times easier. But then you have to wonder about the some of the technologies which have been developed.

The iPhone application which makes the phone flash like a police light is one of those technologies that make some of us ask the question, "What were you thinking?"

Recently, in another part of the State of Michigan two individuals utilized this application to make a traffic stop on another motorist. The motorist became suspicious and contacted police and the two individuals were apprehended.

Citizens and police officers take a dim view of people who impersonate police officers. MCL 750.215 covers impersonating a police officer which can result in a one year misdemeanor or a four year felony charge.

If you think someone is at your residence impersonating a police officer call 911. If the person is a real police officer they will be contacted by the 911 center and the dispatch center will confirm the person is a police officer to you. Do not call a telephone number given to you by the person you suspect may not be a police officer as it could be fake.

If you are a driver and suspect you are being pulled over by someone posing as a police officer, maybe using the "police light" iPhone application, call 911. The dispatch center will confirm if a police officer is pulling you over. If it is not a police officer then real police officers will be dispatched to stop the individual and we'll handle things from there.

It is now the season for high school graduation parties. Parents, if you are hosting one, don't serve alcohol to your underage guests. Nothing good can come from this and a whole lot of bad could happen. Utilizing a designated sober driver is always a good idea.

If you have a questions or comments please email them to askatrooper12@gmail.com, or mail them to Ask A Trooper, Michigan State Police--Brighton Post, 4337 Buno Road, Brighton, MI 48116.

ON BELLE ISLE

Friends keep building afloat

'We're going to be proactive in the solution,' group says of Detroit Boat Club structure By John Gallagher Detroit Free Press Business Writer

The venerable Detroit Boat Club building on Belle Isle has seen its share of boondoggle proposals for redevelopment since the membership left the building in 1996 because of financial difficulties.

Then-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick wanted to make it part of a vast maritime-themed academy campus, and various people have talked about operating a high-end restaurant there. All the ideas came to naught. But over that time, local rowers have quietly continued to use the building as their clubhouse to nurture a sport with roots in Detroit that go back 174 years.

Over the past 17 years, in an arrangement with the City of Detroit, which owns the structure, the nonprofit Friends of Detroit Rowing has poured some $300,000 into repairs and upkeep, including boiler upgrades, weatherproofing and some structural work. All the while, the rowers have filled up the ballroom and dining rooms with rowing and workout machines for a group of more than 250 enthusiasts for the sport.

Those members include youths, masters rowers, serious competitors and recreational rowers. They're on the water in any of the dozens of rowing craft stored at the club when weather permits and otherwise use indoor rowing machines.

This may be Detroit's best example of how a quiet solution works better to save a historic building than some of the more grandiose plans that make headlines but go nowhere.

"A lot of people driving by think it's an abandoned building, and they have no idea what's happening within," said Todd Platt, president of the Friends of Detroit Rowing.

Under its deal with the city, Friends of Detroit Rowing pays $1,000 a month in rent to the city for using the building. But repairs and upgrades count against that obligation, so the Friends has essentially paid its rent years in advance by keeping the building functioning.

One reason many passersby think the Boat Club is abandoned is that the stucco exterior has deteriorated over the years because of a lack of funds. But the building still has good bones.

DBC

The rowers are working on a business plan that, if proper funding appears , could make the boat club the permanent home of the rowing sport in the Midwest. It would involve further upgrades to the building, which dates to 1902.

"We've decided we're going to be proactive in the solution," Platt said. "There's too much at stake with our program."

The Boat Club example demonstrates how smaller, often interim solutions can do more good to save historic structures than waiting for a single grandiose plan to emerge. Once a building is shuttered, it can deteriorate quickly through roof leaks, burst pipes and other problems that come with neglect.

A lot of historic downtown theaters in the U.S. that were first-run movie houses in the 1920s might have fallen to the wrecking ball had not some interim uses been found in the 1950s or so. Some played host to musical acts or burlesque shows before preservationists raised funds to do proper renovations in the 1980s and beyond.

In Detroit, the Michigan Central Railroad Station and the Packard plant show what can happen when a building remains empty for years. Even a modest interim use is better than none.

Platt said the Friends of Detroit Rowing group hopes to build on its modest success in keeping the old clubhouse secure to make it even better in years to come.

"We're game-planning a number of different things," he said. "Hopefully there's that light at the end of the tunnel."

IT in The D: Listen Live
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-06-24

Metro Detroit Information Technology networking group Detroitnet.org launches "IT in The D" internet radio show.

Detroit's Raw Radio X has added a new, two hour long show to its weekly lineup -- "IT in The D". A lively mix of discussion among the Detroitnet.org co-founders, guest segments and listener calls, "IT in The D" goes beyond the casual networking events and Pink Slip Parties that Detroitnet.org is famous for all over the metro Detroit area that have resulted in more than 500 people finding new jobs.

The authors of more than 200 articles ranging from the "Don't Be That Guy" series instructing people on what not to do to be successful at networking to "The Dating Corollary" series that draws parallels between the reader's personal and professional lives to make the concepts clear and relatable, founders Bob Waltenspiel, David Phillips and Jeff Mackey were attracted to doing an internet radio show because of its ability to interact with listeners in ways that their website and other social media presences cannot.

David Phillips noted "Since we first started running with the name a few years ago, "IT in The D" has been a number of things. We've experimented with it as a conference name, a news aggregation site, and our wildly successful event on 3/13/13 at St Andrews Hall that brought over 700 members of the metro Detroit information technology community together. It's quick, clean and easy to remember, and so using it as the name for our new internet radio show made perfect sense as a next step."

"We're very excited about this new avenue to reach, and help, people in the area," adds Bob Waltenspiel. "With more than 500 people finding new jobs from our events around the area and our speaking engagements at local colleges and through MEDC's Shifting Gears Program, it was clear to us that our message, methods and advice resonate with people and can help them move forward with their job search, their hiring practices, and of course when they're just looking to extend their professional network. We're using "IT in The D" to extend our reach and continue making things better here in the area."

"Our first two shows have launched us right out of the gate with a strong start," says Jeff Mackey. "The guests that we've had in-studio are people actually doing something solid and important for the metro Detroit IT community. Too many people weren't even aware that a hardcore security conference was taking place in downtown Detroit, or that a group started by and focused on women in the metro Detroit IT community providing hands-on training and instruction even existed. Add in a recruiter each week talking about jobs they're looking to fill and taking calls, and you have another way we help make connections and improve things for people."

The "IT in The D" show airs weekly on Monday nights from 9pm to 11pm live from the Raw Radio X studio in downtown Detroit, Michigan.

Take a Chance Tuesday with Holly Williams
Ann Arbor Ski Club

TUE 2013-06-25

**At the Take a Chance nights the show is free with a food donation for Food Gatherers** Daughter of Hank Jr., granddaughter of Hank!

Hailed by American Songwriter as a "sophisticated, introspective singer/songwriter" and as having "a lovely, ever-on-the-verge- of-breaking voice, and knows how to sell a song" by the Washington Post, critically lauded Nashville-based singer-songwriter Holly Williams released her third studio album, "The Highway," on Georgiana Records February 5, 2013.

Co-produced by Charlie Peacock (The Civil Wars) and Williams, "The Highway" is the follow-up to 2009's "Here With Me," and is Holly's first record as an independent artist. Additionally, the album features guest vocals from Jackson Browne ("Gone Away From Me"), Jakob Dylan ("Without You"), Dierks Bientley ("'Til It Runs Dry") and Gwyneth Paltrow ("Waiting On June").

Featuring 11 original compositions of "serious-minded, heavy-hearted songwriting she's done all along," (Nashville Scene), all songs were either written or co-written by Williams. Writing collaborators include Christopher Coleman ("Happy," "Let You Go," "'Til It Runs Dry") Lori McKenna ("Without You"), Sarah Buxton ("A Good Man") and Cary Barlowe ("'Til It Runs Dry"). Recorded at The Art House in Nashville, the album was engineered and mixed by Richie Biggs, with additional engineering and mixing by Nick Autry, and Chuck Ainlay.

"I think every artist has their coming of age record," says Williams. "This one definitely feels like mine in that there was such a shift with me through the process of this record. It was completed in exactly nine months to the day, feeling somewhat like a birth. These songs really brought a focus into my life personally. Since the last record, I turned 30, my grandparents are gone, I'm married now, I'm keeping doggies and gardens alive, I have a clothing store, I have a husband on tour with a huge rock band, so there's a lot to keep up with. But the highway came calling and I suddenly had this serious longing for the road, the fans, the storytelling, and the life in that living. I'm ready to get back to those wheels and play these songs for everyone."
