Tips for Women Traveling Solo
Hostelling International-Michigan

TUE 2011-06-28
Although geared toward women, anyone interested in hearing about the benefits of solo travel is welcome at this presentation by the Michigan Council of Hostelling International. There is no one way to take a trip, but traveling solo can be a very positive, life-changing, and empowering experience. Because of this, many people prefer to travel solo. In particular, many women want the freedom and independence that comes from solo travel. All kinds of women do this, not just college students. Women of any age and level of physical ability or income can travel solo. The benefits of solo travel include the following: self-discovery - you will better understand your reactions to the world around you and better understand your limits and preferences; build confidence in your judgment and an amazing sense of accomplishment; you will become less intimidated by new challenges and new and different people; you will discover just how resourceful you are; change your life forever - a chance to escape your day-to-day routine, have new experiences, and learn to handle them by yourself. Mollika Biernat has traveled solo throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe; she has travelled with company in Central America, Europe, and India. Her favourite travel companions are hostels, a backpack, Lonely Planet, a journal, Smartwool socks, and a miner's lamp.

Guitar virtuoso, Joe Summers, and violinist, Paul Chang, inspired by Europe's most famous Gypsy, Django Reinhardt, begin the evening at 6:00 PM. They deliver beautifully improvised jazz reverent of the '20s and '30s that is punctuated by energetic, tight melodies and strong beats that will get you dancing. Then, at 7:30 PM, the Rusty Wright Band plays an electrifying, blues-infused tour de force of southern rock n' roll from the heart of the rustbelt, Flint, Michigan. In less than three years this six-piece has made the leap from regional favorite to performing at some of North America's top blues festivals. A scorchin' southern roots jam that'll be sure to get everyone dancing! Both concerts are free. Take I-94 West (from the Detroit area) to Exit 177, State Street. Turn right (north) on State Street. Continue on State Street to the U-M campus. Turn either left or right from State Street onto Washington Street. (Parking lots are located in both directions.) Liberty Square is walking distance to Ingalls Mall/Top of the Park. Entrance is off Washington between State Street and Division; cost is $2 after 3:00 PM. RSVP by Friday, July 1st. 734-332-3993
