Thanks for Asking----

Several people inquired about the photo we used in the June 25, 2012 newsletter. They wanted to know " who was the photographer. Well this photo was taken by one of my favorite local professional photographers, Yakhov Fatin, you can see more of his work by clicking on this link.

Another favorite local professional is is Hugh Mclean and you can see some of his work here,

We will try to place the photo credits at the bottom of the photo in the future.

Palmer Park Bike Ride
Palmer Woods Homes

MON 2012-07-09
icon PHOTO: J Singleton

DETROIT'"On a hot evening in Detroit, a group of 18 bicyclists gather in the parking lot adjacent to the waterless outdoor swimming pool at the south edge of Palmer Park.

As folks gather, arriving by car and bike, most of us engage in introductions and small talk; others ride in small circles or figure eights as if under the Big Top, anxious for the 7:30 ride to begin.

Cutting across the black top and onto a paved path, we cruise by the Detroit Mounted Police compound with saddle blankets hanging on a line out back.

In seconds, we are into the woods. Wait, the woods in the middle of Detroit? Indeed. Palmer Park actually has 13 miles of trails for hiking or biking through woods and park areas.

After a rain earlier in the day, the forest smells richly of pine and cedar and the trees muffle the sounds of nearby Woodward Ave. It's quiet and peaceful, with just the crunch of gravel and twigs under our wheels.

We cruise at a pace that's neither hurried nor lollygagging. The trail is surprisingly clean, but there are littered stretches and an occasional surprise, like the pair of men's jeans strewn in a clearing.

After a few miles, we're out of the woods, back onto roads, cruising around the Palmer Park Apartment District, a mix of occupied and abandoned brick structures.

We cruise north on a glass-smattered sidewalk along Woodward Avenue for a stretch, skirting the Palmer Park public golf course. Riding through old neighborhoods, we wave, ring bells and say "howdy" to folks on foot, like we're on the set of a Minute Made lemonade commercial.

We ride past the more chichi Detroit Golf Club, down side streets, nodding and smiling at all whom we pass: some waiting at bus stops; others trekking on foot with the day's groceries.

We pass by Palmer Park's bustling tennis courts and by the newly planted (by the People for Palmer Park) apple tree orchards.

Our group is made up of serious cyclists and novices alike, but the spirit is clearly about community and camaraderie, rather than gear, equipment and fitness level.

We are middle-aged folks, twenty-something college students, and seniors. Lots of folks live in the nearby neighborhoods of Palmer Park, Green Acres or Sherwood Forest. Some have driven or ridden from slightly farther stretches: Hazel Park, Ferndale and Royal Oak.

I make a new friend that's traveled here from Grosse Pointe. He went to college at University of Detroit; curiosity about his alma mater neighborhood and a desire to ride has lured him across town.

As dusk digs her heels in, the eight-mile-or-so ride ends with another loop through the woods, around a manmade pond abundant with geese, and past Palmer Park's majestic log cabin (Detroit's only log cabin, built in 1885).

Rides like this -- carefree rides without much of a plan -- remind me of being a kid. How I'd just hop on my bike, pick up my friends and cruise -- plain and simple (well, okay, sometimes no-handed and sometimes with a skateboarding pal in tow).

We didn't have an agenda; we weren't trying to get our heart rate up or burn fat. Instead, it was pure play. Sometimes us adults forget that we, too, need time to play, and biking is a joyous way to do that.

Starts at 7:30 PM.. Location: Palmer Park. Detroit, Michigan.

Michigan Swing Dance Association

SUN 2012-07-15
Every month, the MSDA holds a kick-ass dance, usually on the third Sunday. Our dance is held at the gorgeous Rhythm -n- Shoes Ballroom Dance Studio in Bloomfield Hills. There are lessons at 3 PM and a dance party from 4 to 8 PM. The music is California Mix with East and West Coast Swing, Hustle, Ballroom, Latin and Country and our DJ, Phil Dorroll, takes requests. For members, the dance is $9 and the lesson is free. For non-members, the lesson is $4 and the dance is $11. If you join the club at the dance, you save $6. .

The MSDA dances are attended by couple and singles alike. For the most part, our members are single and we are always happy to see new members join. Mass & Lunch
Catholic Alumni Club

SUN 2012-07-15
SUNDAY, JULY 15TH 11:45 AM MASS & LUNCH YES, last month we went to Mexican Town for mass and lunch. Today we go Italian. San Francesco Church will host their 12 noon mass in English, which we shall attend. (The 10 AM liturgy is in Italian, FYI). Look for us at the back of church. Special attraction for those who are interested: The original cord worn by St. Francis of Assisi has been carefully passed down for centuries by a local family in Assisi and is available for viewing at San Francesco. Honest to God!! This is a tremendous opportunity for people who are fans of St. Francis. San Francesco Church is located at 22870 S. Nunneley Rd., just off 16 Mild Rd., east of Gratiot in Clinton Township. We will dine out locally afterwards, and if the weather is nice, Metropolitan Beach is just down the road for a Sunday afternoon stroll . . . you might even bring your bathing suit "just in case". The Ann Arbor Art Fairs
Art Show

This event spans the period from 2012-07-18 to 2012-07-21
Wed. - Friday, 10 am to 9 pm
Saturday - 10 am to 5 pm
never on Sunday
This enticing extravaganza of art is officially divided into four events, listed below. In addition to this, every square foot of outdoor space in this area has been sold to people who did not jury into these four events. If there is something you have been hankering for, you can find it in Ann Arbor in July. People come from around the country and some shop all four days. Customers here for the first time are awed by the quantity, the quality and the creativity and vow to return next year. Come to add to your art collection, come to see the best in contemporary art, come to start your collection, you will not be disappointed.
Parking: The easiest way to avoid the traffic is to head to Briarwood Mall, on I-94, and take the shuttle to the fairs. Or, you can arrive early. There are a lot of parking structures adjacent to the exhibit areas that are full by noon (or sooner). The evenings are also a great time to shop and the nearby parking is easier to find in the downtown.
1. The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair
190 Artists On North University, near the Bell Tower
This is the original art fair that started the whole event. Established in 1959, it is highly juried - over 1000 applicants apply for the 190 spaces. The most avant garde work will be exhibited here, as well as many artists who rarely exhibit their work outdoors.
Townie Street Party on Monday night in the Street Fair area, near the Bell Tower.
For more info: www.artfair.org

2. South University Art Fair
200 Artists In the South University shopping district Held in the area where the Street Fair was originally, this event organized by the local merchants has very high standards and some outstanding artwork.

3. State Street Area Art Fair
330 Artists
This fair, coordinated by the State Street Area merchants, has been around since l963. It is located on Liberty, Thompson and surrounding areas. Often you will find newcomers to the world of art fairs exhibiting here---the stars of tomorrow!

4. Summer Art Fair
Two locations:
250 Artists on Main & Liberty
200 Artists on State Street
Organized by the The Guild, an artists organization, this show has the widest range of price levels of any of the Ann Arbor events. Uneven quality, it has some of the best in the show and some of the worst. It is easy to shop on Main Street with nearby parking and a plethora of restaurants.
For more info: www.theguild.org
