"Boy" Rescues Himself From The Streets

Dog that recued himselfIn August 2010 "Boy" rescued himself from the streets of Detroit by jumping into the open car door of a social worker who, fortunately, was also a volunteer for the pet rescue PAAW.  He is a perfectly marked rottweiler who had been overly-trained, used for stud, then tossed out of a car in a strange neighborhood of Detroit.  He was near death with various illnesses and starving.

The rescue called me and asked if I could teach him to "come."  Sure, I said, bring him over.  However, immediately I ascertained Boy was about 95% deaf.  In spite of looking like a youngster with a puppy face, he was about 10 years old.  He'd been harshly treated and jerked back in terror when I tried to pet him.  He was near death with 1 1/2 lungs filled with pneumonia fluid; had parasites, e-coli, severe arthritis, a paralyzed vocal cord, ear and eye infections, and was 30 lbs. underweight.  But worst of all, he had never been loved.

The process began of vet visits, medications, special food and gently assuring him that he was safe.  The only name to which he responded when shouted loudly was "BOY!" - so I determined that should be his name.  It worked.

After two or three months a new vet gave Boy a grim prognosis - he is "unadoptable" due to two kinds of heart failure and kidney failure.  The severe arthritis in his front elbow was also in his spine and hips.  His heart is very large, flacid and congested with fluid.  His kidneys function less than 25%.  The medicine for the arthritis hurts the kidneys and the treatment for the kidneys hurts the heart.  It is a balancing act treating Boy.  Last October the new vet pronounced he would not live through this spring or summer.  As PAAW is a no-kill rescue, we determined to keep him as comfortable as possible and let him live the rest of his life in happiness. Click here to read the rest of the story

Emails from our Readers

Dear Peggy Jo,
The fantastic music that everyone enjoyed at Crawford-Armstrong's 'Fun Day in the Sun'. held at the DYC was provided not by a DJ but entertainer/musican, BRIAN BOSMAN. He was such a hit, not only with the 'guests' and volunteers but also with the DYC members who were so impressed, they have hired him for a future date at the club.
Suzanna Kain

[this was in response to last weeks letter below]

Dear Peggy Jo,

Who was the DJ at the Crawford/Armstrong Picnic at Detroit Yacht Club? It was wonderful and he was very entertaining.

Refactoring to a S.O.L.I.D. Foundation
Business and Professional Event

WED 2011-07-20
In this session we take a small, functional but tightly-coupled, software solution and improve its design using each of Robert C. Martin\'s S.O.L.I.D. principles as follows: SRP: Single Responsibility Principle OCP: Open-Close Principle LSP: Liskov Substitution Principle ISP: Interface Segregation Principle DIP: Dependency Inversion Principle Each principle is applied in sequence to the existing solution, making it possible for the attendee to observe the principle in relative isolation first while also evolving an understanding of how the principles all collaboratively reinforce each other when applied together. Before each principle is applied and the solution is refactored to introduce it, the attendee is presented with one or two simple PowerPoint slides to introduce the concept and provide some abstract understanding of its goals and benefits to OO programming. The principle is then applied to the existing solution, demonstrating the practical application of the principle to working software. At each step along the way, the existing solution (a simple console application) is re-executed, demonstrating that the overall behavior of the software solution has not been negatively impacted by the various refactorings. Speaker: Steve Bohlen Currently a Senior Software Engineer for SpringSource where he is the Technical Lead and Community Evangelist for the Spring.NET Framework, Stephen brings his varied 18-year-plus experience in software and technology to the design and delivery of Software Engineering Solutions and Frameworks for other Software Engineers. In addition to his work on Spring.NET, Stephen is also an active contributor to several other .NET Open-Source Software projects including NHibernate, NDbUnit, and others as well having developed a number of Visual Studio productivity add-ins. Active in the software development community, Stephen speaks publicly, blogs (semi-)regularly, and is the author of several popular screencast series focused on Agile and ALT.NET concepts and technologies including the widely-praised 15-part Summer of NHibernate video series introducing viewers to the popular open-source O/RM tool. Stephen is also a founding/organizing member of the NYC ALT.NET user group which meets monthly to discuss Agile-focused techniques and technologies in the world of Microsoft software development and beyond.
