Parade of Lights on the Clinton River Sat Aug 6

From the Clinton River Watershed web site:

The Parade of Lights is a boat parade organized by Boat Town USA on the first Saturday in August along the lower Clinton River and Lake St. Clair. Each year, the parade attracts tens of thousands of spectators to marinas, backyard parties, and boat docks along the Clinton River and Metro Beach. Decorated boats and riverfront houses compete to win cash prizes. The Pride of Michigan, the research vessel for the Great Lakes Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps, leads the parade. The parade begins at dusk (about 9 pm) and runs from the Bridgeview Bridge on the Clinton River below Mt. Clemens, out onto Lake St. Clair, around Huron Pointe, and ends at Metro Beach Metro Park. An antique boat show, sponsored by the Michigan Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, has a free show throughout the day at Metro Beach, and the antique boats precede the Parade of Lights with a splendid parade of their own. The parade can be viewed by the public (if you aren't lucky enough to know someone with a backyard along the river) from the DNR boat launch at the end of South River Road or at Metro Beach Metro Park (boats usually arrive at the park between 10:00 and 11:00 pm). For the first time in 2004, the Clinton River Watershed Council had an entry in the parade, thanks to the sponsorship of longtime member, David Linsdeau. David is owner and captain of the Oceanis, a one-of-a-kind 65-foot vessel that started life as a near-shore oil tanker on the Atlantic coast and is now being converted for personal use, complete with a kitchen and living space. David welcomed CRWC and 20 guests aboard the Oceanis for the 2004 Parade of Lights. With the help of volunteers, we outfitted the boat with two 8' x 10' maps of the Clinton River watershed, two 12-foot banners announcing our name and website, hundreds of white lights, and a sound system broadcasting water- themed tunes. A fabulous time was had by all! We are pleased to report that the Oceanis won third place in the Business Over 36' category, and David Linsdeau donated the $200 prize to CRWC!

    Miracle League season extended

The season scheduled to end on August 14 has been extended to the end of September with games only on Sunday. The teams will be combined and shuffled to accomodate all kids that want to play. If it was up to the kids who participate, they would like it to last all year.

I attended a Wednesday night game and met Sam Miller, who is one of the kids even though he is 25 years old, and his father Greg (in the picture). Steve Peck hopes to start a league for adults so that sam can continue to play.

The Miracle League was happy to get the money we raised at the fundraiser and we hope to hold another in September. Come out to see one of these games it will do your heart good.
