Be Careful of Scams Now That the Census is Beginning.
For years, the Better Business Bureau has educated consumers about not giving out personal information over the telephone or to anyone who shows up at their front door.
With the U.S. Census process beginning, BBB is advising people to be cooperative but be cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft.
The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers begin verifying the addresses of households across the country.
Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will attempt to count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race and other relevant data.
The Census data will be used to allocate more than $300 billion in federal funds every year, as well as determine the states’ number of congressional representatives. Households are actually required by law to respond to the Census Bureau’s request for information.
“You should always be cautious to avoid giving out personal information whenever an unknown person calls your home or knocks at the door, however assisting census workers is an exception to that rule,” said Tim Burns, public affairs director for the Better Business Bureau serving Detroit and eastern Michigan.
“Assisting with the U.S. Census is an important responsibility that people should cooperate with, but also keep your guard up,” Burns said.
During the U.S. Census, households will be contacted by mail, telephone or visited by a U.S. Census worker who will inquire about the number of people living in the house.
Unfortunately, people may also be contacted by scammers who are impersonating census workers in order to gain access to sensitive financial information such as Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers.
The BBB has started receiving information that scammers are posing as Census Bureau employees and knocking on doors asking for donations and Social Security numbers.
“Scammers know that people will be more trusting about things associated with the Census and will be looking to take advantage of that,” added Burns. ”Watch out for e-mail scams involving the census or people stopping by your house or calling you on the telephone posing as government employees attempting to solicit money or sensitive financial information.”
The big question is — how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? The BBB offers the following advice:
• If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home.
• Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, it will not ask for Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations.
• Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail or in person at home. However, they will not contact you by e-mail, so be on the look out for e-mail scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an e-mail that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Cocktail Cruising Race.
As of press time we have not received the complete final results of the race because Bob Cowles is on his way to the North Channel and out of reach of an internet connection. We do have some preliminary results here.
We understand that all but one of the fourteen boats finished all four legs of the race. The only one that dropped out was the Hunter 19 that stopped at Port Sanilac. Perhaps Richard Davis the Skipper of the boat will come back next year with a bigger boat See it here

This is still getting many people to click each week so we are keeping it in. Let us know if you think it is worthwhile.
I found that it did work to highlight a coupon and then printing it to to avoid printing the entire newsletter .
Carl the Ump.
Thank you for your input. Unfortunately all systems are not the same. Some people can't print period. That is why we have the request for an email message with the coupon which can be routed to a friend that has print capabilities. You get the request for email by clicking on the coupon.
Hi Peggy Jo
- what a wonderful news letter you send out each week. I don't know how you keep up with all you have to do to put it together. I do have one question. I have never been able to open any of the coupons at the end on the news letter. I do receive "Mail Coupon RequesT." I am sure I am doing something wrong. Thanks and keep up the good work. I enjoy my Monday morning news.
The coupons are picture files (.jpg). If your ISP (internet service provider) has disabled the printing of pictures by default, you can call their customer service department to find out how to turn this feature on. If that is not posible, then when you get the "Mail Coupon Request" form use a friends email address and then they can print it for you.
Dear Peggy Jo,
Thank you for your answer regarding partial printing of your newsletter however I am using Microsoft Outlook and I could not find a print preview function ?
We have updated the frequently asked question page to further explain partial printing. Print preview is a function of your operating system and not the email reader. The addition to the faq page explains how to use your browser to read the newsletter. at the very top of every newsletter one can find the phrase "Would you like to get a better view?" clicking on that option will send the newsletter to your browser which is more capable than the email reader.
Dear Peggy Jo,
Channel 4 has nominated Fitness Unlimited as one of the best local businesses in their "2009 4 the Best" contest. (More information here: www.clickondetroit.com/4thebest ) However, we need YOUR votes to WIN!
You can vote one time per e-mail address. You can also leave a review (as long as it's a nice one! :)
But as for me, Lord,
my prayer to You is for a time of favor.
In Your abundant, faithful love, God,
answer me with Your sure salvation"
