A Special Message to Those Who Will Be Staying Up To See the Mars Landing

We hope to have the newsletter ready and eMailed by 11:00 PM (EDT) on Sunday August 5. Which will give you plenty of time to open the newsletter and to explore the links to items we have on the blog. While your waiting we hope that you will not only click on the links but also use the comment section to tell us what you think about the items in the blog.

  1. Keeping in mind that every dollar spent on space is spent right here on Earth, do you think the cost of the Mars trip is appropriate?
  2. Do you think any of your grand or great grand children might live on Mars?
  3. If there already was an Earth colony on Mars, attractively terraformed, would you be interested in living there?

Don't be afraid to click. We hope you trust us. Be careful about links suggested by people you don't know or web sites of strangers.

Here is the Mars Landing Discussion Page

Some of the videos require javascript to be enabled but don't let that stop you. Javascript runs on your device and makes good things happen. You can switch it on and off. We want to make our blog, an extension of the newsletter, to be something that you will enjoy. Tell us what you think -- good or bad. Please leave a comment. You can use a screen name instead of your own name.

Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is a robotic mission to Mars launched by NASA on November 26, 2011 that will attempt to land a Mars rover called Curiosity on the surface of Mars. Currently en route to the planet, it is scheduled to land in Gale Crater at about 05:31 UTC on August 6, 2012 (1:31 AM EDT our time). Curiosity rovers' objectives include determining Mars' habitability, studying its climate and geology, and collecting data for human missions.
Curiosity is about twice as long and five times as heavy as the Spirit and Opportunity Mars exploration rovers, and carries over ten times the mass of scientific instruments. It will attempt a more accurate landing than previous rovers, within a landing ellipse of 7 by 20 km (4.3 by 12 mi), in the Aeolis Palus region of Gale Crater. This location is near the mountain Aeolis Mons (formerly called "Mount Sharp"). It is designed to explore for at least 687 Earth days (1 Martian year) over a range of 5 by 20 km (3.1 by 12 mi).
The Mars Science Laboratory mission is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort for the robotic exploration of Mars, and the project is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of California Institute of Technology. When MSL launched, the program's director was Doug McCuistion of NASA's Planetary Science Division. The total cost of the MSL project is about US$2.5 billion.

There will be a "Blue Moon" This Month!

From Wikipedia:

A blue moon can refer to the third full moon in a season with four full moons. Most years have twelve full moons that occur approximately monthly. In addition to those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains roughly eleven days more than the lunar year of 12 lunations. The extra days accumulate, so every two or three years (7 times in the 19-year Metonic cycle), there is an extra full moon. Lunisolar calendars have rules about when to insert such an intercalary or embolismic ("leap") month, and what name it is given; e.g. in the Hebrew calendar the month Adar is duplicated. The term "blue moon" comes from folklore. Different traditions and conventions place the extra "blue" full moon at different times in the year.
In calculating the dates for Lent and Easter, the Clergy identify the Lent Moon. It is thought that historically when the moon's timing was too early, they named an earlier moon as a "betrayer moon" (belewe moon), thus the Lent moon came at its expected time.

Folklore gave each moon a name according to its time of year. A moon that came too early had no folk name, and was called a blue moon, retaining the correct seasonal timings for future moons

.
The Farmers' Almanac defined blue moon as an extra full moon that occurred in a season; one season was normally three full moons. If a season had four full moons, then the third full moon was named a blue moon.
A "blue moon" is also used colloquially to mean "a rare event", reflected in the phrase "once in a blue moon".

You will need to bring work gear (listed below), business cards, your dancing work boots, smile and the energy to have a great day.

You should download, print and sign the waiver form posted here: http://motorcityconnect.groupsite.com/group/MCCRGS/discussion/topic/show/212931

Downtown Networking event
Business and Professional Event

TUE 2012-08-28
We're a group of Detroit Economic Club members who are trying to get together a regular (on the last Tuesday of every month) networking event at the Sky Bar at 1150 Griswold in downtown Detroit. We need people to show up! Right now no web site is set up or admission charged but that could change in the future. We just want to get something started in Downtown Detroit on a regular basis that is a "networking event". If you can show up at the next meeting please do so. But also remember that we are in the beginning stages of the process and things may be a little rough at first. But the bar manager knows who we are and what's going on so show up and let's network! See you at the Sky Bar at the next networking event! Thanks.
