Arts Beats and Eats

Logo

Royal Oak was empty during the Dream Cruise. More than likely, anyone thinking of going to visit the Royal Oak fun places, were scared off by the thought of crowd problems. Over the Labor Day Weekend it will be different-- it will be crowded with foot traffic because people will be parking remote and taking the shuttle busses into downtown.

Now in its 16th year, Ford Arts, Beats & Eats Presented by FirstMerit Bank takes place in Downtown Royal Oak. The festival will offer more than 200 performances on ten stages, a highly ranked Juried Fine Arts Show, local restaurants with some of the finest cuisine in metro Detroit and international, regional and local attractions that will make the city of Royal Oak the premier destination for Labor Day weekend 2013.

Festival admission is $3 until 5pm Saturday, Sunday & Monday and $5 after 5pm everyday. Ford Arts, Beats & Eats is free to enter until 5pm on Friday only.

Kayaking the Huron River
Catholic Alumni Club

SAT 2013-08-24
KAYAKING ON THE HURON RIVER IN ANN ARBOR Ann Arbor has one river, the Huron, but it has several spots for kayaking--let's try one! Meet at the Argo Nature Center, not far from downtown Ann Arbor to board your craft. http://www.a2gov.org/government/communityservices/ParksandRecreation/Cano eLiveries Single kayaks are $14 for a two hour "still water" rental, double kayaks are $18. If you are new to the sport, we'll teach you how to do it. Depending on the skill level of those who show up, we will have our choice. We can either to go upstream on a still water lake, or we can go downstream through the river's nine cascades and pools (costs extra unless we portage our way back upriver). Or maybe both, in that order! Bring a sack lunch, your sunscreen, a swim suit, towel, and a change of clothes (just in case). They take cash, check, or charge. There is no deposit but they require you give them either a photo ID or your car keys. The Argo Nature Center is at 1055 Longshore Dr, Ann Arbor, MI. The easiest way to get there is to take M-14 to the Whitmore Lake / Barton Shoreline Drive exit (Exit #4). Once off the expressway, make sure you end up on Barton headed east. After a quarter mile you will have to make a sharp right onto a dirt road named Longshore Drive headed south. Then make a right on to Argo Dr. which will o into the park. Parking can be tight but there is an overflow lot on the top of the hill, up the closest street. The rental phone number is (734) 794-6241 if you have questions. For a map, visit: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=42.2915,-83.7445&z=12 Please RSVP by Friday, Aug. 23rd. to your club contact: Mark 810-499-4831 or yesmarklapointe@gmail.com

ABOUT THE PLAY: "Waiting for Godot" is an absurdist play by Samuel Beckett, in which two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, wait endlessly and in vain for the arrival of someone named Godot. Godot's absence, as well as numerous other aspects of the play, have led to many different interpretations since the play's premiere, 1940ish. It was voted "the most significant English language play of the 20th century."
