Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; so does the sweetness of a friend's counsel that comes from the heart.
Proverbs 27:9

"As We Were"

The Cauleys On May 27, 1984, James J.Cauley died at the age of 81. His wife Eleanore wanted to find a special way to say goodbye to the man she had loved for over 50 years.

At the age of 76 Eleanore enrolled in an adult education english class in the pursuit of a high school diploma which she had always wanted. She had to quit school at the age of 13 to go to work. The class was given the assignment to write a poem. Eleanore was not confident that she could complete the assignment.

Not only did she complete the assignment, but went on to write several poems which her teacher described as very good.

The poem below was read at a seminar on Aging in Washington D.c., it appeared in the Macomb Daily and was read at the funeral of James Cauley who spent his last years in a nursing home.

Eleanore turned 99 yesterday (August 19, 2007) and is looking forward to her 100th.

As We Were
by Eleanore Cauley

"Goodnight Sweetheart"
"I'll see you in my dreams"
Songs on the casette, favorites of Frank Fontain....
Can it be more than half a century ago!
My thoughts drift back to the ballroom where we first met....
It was intermission, you walked in
Tall, dressed in a blue serge suit.
We made eye contact-I pretended not to see....,
Just knew you would ask me to dance, which you did!
Knew I looked smashing in my brown satin gown,
with yoke of ecru lace, hair marcelled.
We danced the night away.
The last dance was always....
"Goodnight Sweetheart."
Years swiftly passed by, our family grew....
To You--"Girl of My Dreams" I would always be...
Now my hair is silver, yours almost gone.
I hold your trembling hand;
See your bandaged feet.
The music plays on, "Oh How I Miss You Tonight,"
"Let Me Call You Sweetheart."
I go home alone,
You left in someone else's care.
"Goodnight Sweetheart"
I'll remember always, As We Were.

James and Eleanore met in the spring of 1931, 76 years ago. Some things never change. The dance goes on.

Emails from our readers

HI Peggy Jo,
A friend of mine that receives your newsletter forwarded it to me. He said you may be interested in doing an article and taking a photo with the fastest sailboat in the Great Lakes, Earthvoyager. It's a 60 foot trimaran and has the speed record for the Trans Superior, Trans Erie and Port Huron Mack races. This year it has joined forces with a nonprofit called the Friends of the St. Clair Watershed in Port Huron. We are trying to use the boat to spread the message about water quality in the Great Lakes and especially in the Huron-Erie corridor.

The boat and members of the board will be down on Grosse Isle as part of a reporter's tour on August 23rd. We would love to give you a tour of the boat and provide you with more info about our organization while we are down there if you are interested in helping us promote our cause.

You can reply by email or give me a call on my cell: 810 887 7801
Hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Kristen Jurs,
Friends of the St. Clair River Watershed

"A great Michigan songwriter and her special guest!" A Detroit-area songwriter who has garnered lots of national attention, Jan Krist began writing music and performing in folk clubs in 1980. She fascinates audiences with her thoughtful, challenging songs, clothed in the most straightforward of pop melody-making. Entertainment Weekly opined that Krist "makes soul-searching more enjoyable than it has any right to be." Jan Krist is joined by Curtis Armstrong, actor, singer, and fellow Berkley High School alum. The two sang a duet at the BHS Folk Show in January of 1970--and they'll be doing a reprise of that duet tonight! (You might want to watch "A Mighty Wind" to set the mood.) Best known for his immortal role in "Revenge of the Nerds," Curtis has appeared most recently in "Akeelah and the Bee" and "Smokin' Aces." He's also an internationally recognized expert on the music of Harry Nilsson, and he'll be performing a set with Jan's band backing him up. Starts at 07:30 PM. Price is $15.
