Crime Scene Investigators

We are sure that many of you have watched the TV shows that solve crimes by getting a technician to examine the hard drive of a suspect's computer and find out many incriminating facts that solve the mystery. We have also heard about secrets being stolen by looking through files that people thought were deleted. Remarkably, these stories are largely true .

Hackers can go through a computer hard drive and pick up financial data that the computer user thought was purged.

Deleting a file and then clearing the recycle bin does not remove the file. It only removes its' address from the directory and marks the space as being available for another file. Because the capacity of new hard disks is much larger, a new file might not use that space for quite some time and the original data is still there and available to programs that can scan all sectors of a disk.

Email programs store messages, etc., in database files, so it is impossible to erase individual messages directly using a program such as Eraser. The best you can do with an email program is delete the messages in the normal way, then compact the email folders and then erase the free space on the drive using Eraser.

Just compacting the files makes the deleted messages non-recoverable for most users. Someone with reasonably good computing skills, the right recovery program and the time and access to your machine required, however, might be able to recover some deleted emails under some circumstances. The Eraser free space erase makes that less likely, particularly if you compact your email store reasonably frequently.

This Eraser program is meant for personal data. Businesses should be aware of laws that prohibit the erasure of emails and other data.

Eraser is a free program and is described in further detail on
this page on the Peggy Jo Studio Blog.

Need Sharpening

A PENCIL MAKER TOLD THE PENCIL 5 IMPORTANT LESSONS JUST BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE BOX :

1.) EVERYTHING YOU DO WILL ALWAYS LEAVE A MARK.
2.) YOU CAN ALWAYS CORRECT THE MISTAKES YOU MAKE.

3.) WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS WHAT IS INSIDE OF YOU.

4.) IN LIFE , YOU WILL UNDERGO PAINFUL SHARPENINGS, WHICH WILL ONLY MAKE YOU BETTER.

5.) TO BE THE BEST PENCIL, YOU MUST ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE HELD AND GUIDED BY THE HAND THAT HOLDS YOU.

We all need to be constantly sharpened. This parable may encourage you to know that you are a special person, with unique God-given talents and abilities. Only you can fulfill the purpose which you were born to accomplish. Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot be changed and, like the pencil, always remember that the most important part of who you are, is what's inside of you and then allow yourself to be guided by the hand of God.

" For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, "

Legal Issues with Mobile
Business and Professional Event

MON 2012-08-20
This month's event will feature speakers exploring the myriad of legal issues related to the development and/or use of mobile technologies. Speakers will include:

o Robin Luce-Herrmann, Attorney, Butzel Long
o Mike Watza, Partner, Kitch Drutchas Wagner Valitutti & Sherbrook and General Counsel, Mobile Technology Association of Michigan
Attorney Luce-Herrmann will discuss one of the hottest topics in digital media today, mobile data management. As we all know, constantly evolving legislation and regulation plays a major role in the management of personal identifying information and protected health information. Advances in geo-location and geo-social tools have opened new questions that push the boundary of our understanding of privacy. Even with data management tools, data use by individuals, businesses and law enforcement creates new hazards and perils for users and programmers alike. Attorney Luce-Herrmann will highlight the issues you will likely see as tomorrow's headlines in the area of mobile data management.

Once again Mobile Monday Detroit will take place at Compuware headquarters in downtown Detroit, and as always, attendance is FREE, but advance registration is required for security purposes. Free parking is available (with ticket validation at sign-in) in Compuware's parking deck directly behind the headquarters building, and refreshments will be served.

SPONSORSHIP: Mobile Monday Detroit is sponsored by Mobile Monday Michigan, Compuware and the Mobile Technology Association of Michigan.
Starts at 5:30 pm.. Location: Compuware. One Campus Martius, Detroit Mi.

Downtown Networking event
Business and Professional Event

TUE 2012-08-28
We're a group of Detroit Economic Club members who are trying to get together a regular (on the last Tuesday of every month) networking event at the Sky Bar at 1150 Griswold in downtown Detroit. We need people to show up! Right now no web site is set up or admission charged but that could change in the future. We just want to get something started in Downtown Detroit on a regular basis that is a "networking event". If you can show up at the next meeting please do so. But also remember that we are in the beginning stages of the process and things may be a little rough at first. But the bar manager knows who we are and what's going on so show up and let's network! See you at the Sky Bar at the next networking event! Thanks.
