Detroit Soup

How it works

  • $5 gets you soup, salad, bread and a vote.
  • Bring a chair if you don't want to sit on the floor
  • At each SOUP dinner there are four presentations on projects ranging from art, urban agriculture, social justice, social entrepreneurs, education, technology and more.
  • Each presenter has 4 minutes to share their idea.
  • Audience members can ask each presenter up to 4 questions after their presentation.
  • After the presentations, audience members are encouraged to discuss/debate before voting.
  • Audience members then vote on what project they think benefits the city/their neighborhood the most.
  • Whichever presenter gets the most votes wins all the money collected at the door!

He also says to the Son, In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands.
Hebrews 1:10

Bikes, Beats & Eats on the Lakeland Trail
Meet at 5:00pm at the Zukey Lake Tavern parking lot (5011 Girard Drive, Pinckney, MI). We've been given permission to park our cars at the far end of the parking lot (just as you enter off Girard, and before the first speed bump) with the assumption that most of us will stay to enjoy refreshments and live music after the ride We'll peddle east to Hamburg Road, turn back, peddling west to the end of the paved trail before turning back (about 17 miles round trip on a predominantly flat, paved trail).
For those wanting a shorter ride, meet the group at the same spot to catch us on our return ride-by at 5:30pm (this would give you a 12 mile ride). At the end of the ride, we'll gather on the roof-top deck at Zukey Lake Tavern for refreshments and live music, featuring different performers each week. Questions? Call Joe Knopp at 810-923-1567.

Scarab - Exhibitions
Created by
tericson@scarabclub.org
Curated and assembled by Stephen William Schudlich, The Printer's Devil is an exhibition of selected work that presents a new evidence of Detroit's thriving print making tradition. This collection looks particularly at methods, madness and the creative fruit associated with the process of letterpress, silk screen, risograph, and other "less formal" printing procedures being actively practiced in Detroit's unique creative community.
A printer's devil was an apprentice in a printing establishment who performed a number of tasks, such as mixing tubs of ink and fetching type. They also took worn and broken lead type that had been thrown into a "hellbox", to the furnace for melting and recasting.
It was a fanciful belief among printers that a special devil haunted every print shop, performing mischief such as inverting type, misspelling words or removing entire lines of completed type. The apprentice became a substitute source of blame and came to be called a printer's devil by association.
Business partner of Johann Gutenberg, Johann Fust, sold several of Gutenberg's bibles to King Louis XI of France and his court officials, representing the bibles as hand-copied manuscripts. When it was discovered that individual letters were identical in appearance, Fust was accused of witchcraft – the red ink text was said to have been written in blood, and Fust was imprisoned. Though Fust was later freed after the bibles' origins were revealed, many still believed he was in league with Satan, thus the phrase.
