Royal Oak was empty during the Dream Cruise. More than likely, anyone thinking of going to visit the Royal Oak fun places, were scared off by the thought of crowd problems. Over the Labor Day Weekend it will be different-- it will be crowded with foot traffic because people will be parking remote and taking the shuttle busses into downtown.

Now in its 16th year, Ford Arts, Beats & Eats Presented by FirstMerit Bank takes place in Downtown Royal Oak. The festival will offer more than 200 performances on ten stages, a highly ranked Juried Fine Arts Show, local restaurants with some of the finest cuisine in metro Detroit and international, regional and local attractions that will make the city of Royal Oak the premier destination for Labor Day weekend 2013.

Festival admission is $3 until 5pm Saturday, Sunday & Monday and $5 after 5pm everyday. Ford Arts, Beats & Eats is free to enter until 5pm on Friday only.

The official site is here.

Charley and Shannon Hogan

Charley the "Singing Hot Dog Man", who has been selling hot dogs at Comerica Park since the beginning of this century, is pictured here with Shannon Hogan of Fox 2 Sports.

Charley was recently featured on a Tom Greene show and here is a link to that video.

Not only a baseball fan, Charley has become a fan of soccer by attending the games played at Cass Techinal High School Field by Le Rouge, the Detroit City Football Club.

You can find him at most Tiger home games in section 131. Tell him you saw his photo in the PJSN

Detroit City FC is a minor league soccer team that plays in the National Premier Soccer League's Midwest Great Lakes Conference. Founded in 2012, Detroit City FC has established itself as one of the most talked about soccer teams in North America and the grassroots embodiment of a resurgent city.

Le Rouge played their games in front of very large enthusiastic crowds while mounting a very successful season.Their website is here

IT in The D, Episode 11: Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of All Ages---
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-08-26

Back in our second episode, we had a great conversation with the ladies from Girl Develop It -- Detroit about the various grass roots organizations in the metro Detroit area that were providing training opportunities. Specifically, that there was a bit of a disconnect going on because you have all of these helpful, dedicated, well-meaning people out there providing these free and/or low-cost training classes---and then on the other side of the fence you have a lot of companies in the area that are dying for developers with any level of skill whatsoever---

---but not in what's being taught. Using the resources available to them, most of the grassroots organizations out there doing these free or low-cost trainings are conducting classes using what one might term "basic" open source tools -- PHP, MySQL, Ruby -- while the companies are looking to hire .NET and mobile developers by the dozens at this point.

Enter Grand Circus to the scene. They'll be offering classes running the gamut of technologies, as well as having space available for co-working and events that you can take advantage of. You can read a little more about them here: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130808/BIZ/308080094

We'll also have the hosts from our July event, Atwater Brewery, in-studio with us to talk about their latest offerings and what they see happening downtown. Listen live, Monday nights 9pm to 11pm: http://rawradiox.com/it-in-the-d-by-detroitnet-org/ Listen to previous episodes of the show: http://www.detroitnet.org/index.php/it-in-the-d-listen-live/

Mobilizing Education
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-09-09

Mobile technology is on the minds of education professionals now more than ever before; but those education professionals are involved in a variety of education sectors, including:

  • k-12
  • higher education
  • business education
  • self-education service providers.

It's a big topic, with far-reaching implications for our children - their current education and their future careers, our businesses and ourselves. To help gain an understanding of the topic, Mobile Monday Detroit is presenting Michigan-based experts to provide us with a wide range of perspectives on the topic of 'Mobilizing Education'.

Speakers and their areas of focus will include:

Elaina Farnsworth of Mobile Comply

Christian Marcillo and Glen Konopaskie of Future Help Designs Who will jointly be presenting a case study which showcases how these firms are working together to bring technology, curriculum content, and stakeholders to the table to move the needle in how education is approached from an interactive classroom.

Lisa Toenniges and Matt Kurtin of Innovative Learning Group

Who will discuss how learning technologies are providing new opportunities for learning and performance support and will identify technology-based solutions to fulfill performance needs using a standard performance improvement model, as well as providing several examples of performance improvement solutions successfully using today's new technologies.

Jeff Muglia and Dave Zabihaylo of Sprint

Who will be presenting "What works (and what doesn't) with Wireless for Education".

Godot's absence, as well as numerous other aspects of the play, have led to many different interpretations since the play's premiere, 1940ish. It was voted "the most significant English language play of the 20th century."
