Labor Day

The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, in Boston, by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation's first integrated major trade union.[1] It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.[2] The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair, which it had been observed to commemorate.[3] All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.

Emails from our Readers

Hi, Peggy Jo,

I am emailing you with the suggestion to re-up the Buddy System telephoning.

My friend in Paris (Richard) had a birthday about a week ago.  Facebook notified me.  So I went to his FB page to send a greeting.  (We do not email or chat as a matter of course).  I was surprised to find that he had died exactly four months earlier!  His son had put up a notice!  I also noted that a nephew had written a FB notice to Richard four months earlier saying that he was quite concerned about him; that no one had heard from him in a while and to "please call or email.  We hope you are okay."  It turned out that it was the same day the son later posted the death notice.

I sent a message to the son whom I had never met, and I also sent a message to his niece here in the States.  (I had met her once I believe, at her father's house - who was Richard's brother).  The niece wrote back saying that Richard had apparently died of a heart attack in his sleep and it had been several days before anyone found him.  How horrible!  Further she said that her own father ('DJ') had been placed in a group home, as his recovery had not gone as well as had been hoped.

DJ had had a heart attack several years ago.  His girlfriend had left and had come back into the house for something and found him on the floor.  He had been there over 10 minutes.  She performed CPR and called 911.  He was brain damaged and the result was a functional child in an adult form.  The last I saw him he was giddy and unkempt.  The girlfriend was living in the basement taking care of him.  This is a man who had owned his own successful business and gave seminars to small business people.  He also taught at a university.  How very sad and tragic.

Let's hope we all have someone checking on us as we do for them so such sad stories can be avoided.

Sharon

Dear Peggy Jo,

I have many friends about my age that resist even thinking about texting. Most of them don't want to pay for the text messages that they might receive or they are afraid of the unknown.

My cell phone provider allows me to pay $6.00 per month for unlimited text messaging and I am sure other companies provide similar plans. Text messages will never replace a phone conversation. (I am sure that back in 1930's there were people that thought that phone calls would never replace an in person visit). However text messages can replace the requirement to engage in small talk prior to getting to the point of a phone call. Sending an email requires that the recipient opens their email, and we know that does not happen in a timely manner but a text message is almost immediate and it can be short , sweet and to the point. it can also be sent to multiple people at the same time. One does not have to initiate a conversation to just tell someone that they will be late for an appointment or to change the site or time of a meeting and the recipient can reply with a minimum of texting e.g. Ok!.

Our kids use texting to communicate because it is cheaper than using cell phone minutes for keeping in touch. Granted, that anything can be abused and overused but I think people of my age should open themselves to a very efficient communication tool.

Roy from Royal Oak.

" And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony."
