" If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other"
- Mother Teresa

Dear Readers,

The following article should be approached with caution as it deals with the unpleasant subject of child sexual abuse. The Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter contains a comprehensive listing of things going on in this area, yes. But, it is also a forum for the ideals expressed in the slogan above the masthead. In this spirit, and because I was asked to, I decided to include this article. I believe its subject is terribly prevalent in today's world, but few are aware of what the visible results are. I think we all should be alert for these indicators and do our best to eradicate child sexual abuse in our society. Feel free to send us your comments.

The truth about child molestation: what happens once the victim becomes and adult?

By Stephanie L. Jones, Author, Speaker & Sexual Abuse Advocate

What is child sexual abuse/child molestation?
Child sexual abuse/molestation involves using a child for any type of sexual purpose.  Examples include, but are not limited to, fondling, inviting a child to touch or be touched, rape, intercourse, and pornography.

Child sexual abuse occurs at an alarming rate.  As many as 1 out of 3 females and 1 out of 5 males are molested by age 18, and 90% of the time the offender is a family member, close family friend, or trusted leader.

What are the long-term effects of child molestation?
Because sexual abuse occurs early on in the victims’ lives, most of them never connect the dots.  They don’t make the connection between the addiction to gambling, sex, drugs, and alcohol to what happened to them in the past.  Many victims attempt to move on with their lives as if it never happened.  More results of sexual abuse include low self-esteem, sexual promiscuity, teenage pregnancy, abortion, depression, poor self-image, excessive spending habits, panic and anxiety attacks, and problems forming and maintaining trusting and loving relationships.

According to leading organizations such as Darkness to Light and ChildHelp.com:

  • 66% of teen pregnancies and abortions are preceded by sexual
  • 96% of teen prostitutes are sexual abuse victims
  • 75% of rapists are sexual abuse victims
  • 60% of children who experience abuse and neglect are more likely to be arrested at some point in their lives
What are some of the signs?
Signs of sexual abuse vary per age group. While many people are abused during their childhood years, between the ages of 4 and 7, for a lot of victims the abuse doesn't began until their much older, between the ages of 12 and 18. Younger children are afraid of the dark and talk of the boogie man or monsters. They may appear to be afraid or very friendly toward certain teenagers or adults. They often wet the bed and play sexually with toys or other children. Older children and teenagers have poor self-image, show signs of depression, emotional instability, acting out in school, eating disorders, anger, and promiscuous behavior. Adult victims have problems that have built up over a period of time. They include care taking, emotional disorders, sexual/lustful thoughts, envy and jealousy, controlling behavior, and health problems.

More signs include:

  • Binge eating
  • Busy mind | racing thoughts
  • Fear of objects or people
  • Fear of being alone
  • Guilt
  • Shame
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

How can victims heal?
People are affected by sexual abuse differently, which means there’s no cookie-cut answer to the healing process.  Some victims suffer with alcohol and drug abuse, while other victims don’t have that problem at all.  Each person’s situation must be evaluated and handled accordingly.

However, there are some steps that are recommended for every victim/survivor:

  • Prayer and develop a personal relationship with God.  Find a scripture from the Bible to meditate on daily.  Example: Isaiah 54:4 (for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth).
  • Talk about it with a friend, family member, minister or counselor.
  • Forgive the person(s) who offended you.  Forgiveness is not based on the action or the offender.  It’s a choice that brings healing to the soul.

This Week's Now Famous Person"

Heather, The Manager of Andiamo Osteria, Royal Oak Heather is now famous because she is appearing in the "Got Mustard Campaign" . She is the manager of Andiamo's Osteria in downtown Royal Oak and is as pleasant as she looks. There are almost 500 people who have volunteered to participate and we have found it necessary to change the way the slide show runs so that people can browse rather than wait to see their photo with the "digital mustard" on their upper lip. Congratulations Heather.

The New Blog will help Your Newsletter.

As more organizations have elected to submit their events to the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter it has increased the size of the file that we send to you each Monday morning. Because the file is larger, some of you do not receive the information on Monday and maybe not at all. Sometimes, because of it's size, your internet service provider routes it to your bulk mail or even your spam folder.

With the blog, we can introduce a topic in the newsletter and provide a link to the blog which can give you more details.

Another feature of the blog is that each day's events will be listed on the "Events and News " page with a map to the event's venue. below is the link to the blog. It will also contain any up to date information and/or announcements.
