Art, Beats & Eats No Record, But a Boost to It's Image

Attendance at the Ford Arts, Beats & Eats was 50 percent better than the Labor Day crowd in 2010, making the attendance for the four-days to be within only 20 to 25 percent less than last year's record total, according to Jon Witz, event producer, in the photo with Peggy Jo.

The  four-day attendance, estimated at 335,000, didn't come close to last year's record of 423,000 in 2010, but ranks as the third-best in festival history, according to Witz.

Peggy Jo and Jon Witz

The cooler weather on Sunday and Monday brought bigger crowds, after the first two days when attendance was down because of the extremly hot weather and a rainstorm at night Saturday, Witz said.

According to Rob Swope, manager of Jimi's Family Restaurant, this year's event was even better for their operation. On the first two days the hot weather drove the people into their restaurant to cool off. On the third they came in to keep dry and on the fourth to warm up.

Monday's crowd was 85,000 — which also ranks as the best-ever Labor Day attendance in the festival's 14 years — followed this year's best one-day total of 125,000 on Sunday, Witz said.

The peak for attendance in 2010 was the festival's third day when so many people attended that gates had to be closed temporarily to allow some people to leave before letting more people inside, Witz said. This year's attendance on the third day, 125,000, ranked as the biggest one-day turnout in 2011, and with four additional blocks in the festival area, there was no threat to close down gates, he said.

Attendance spiked again on the final day, and attendees got to stay an extra hour as the festival was extended to 10 p.m. to make up for some of the lost time Saturday, according to Witz.

“I'm pleased. It demonstrates how great a home Royal Oak is for the event. I don't think adverse weather discourages people as much as it would in a different location.”

“We showed we can weather storms, hot weather, and still have success,” he said.

Emails from our Readers

Dear Peggy Jo,

This might be something you can use in your newsletter---

from Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Things
Treat your shoes
Spray WD-40 on new leather shoes before you start wearing them regularly. It will help prevent blisters by softening the leather and making the shoes more comfortable. Keep the shoes waterproof and shiny by spraying them periodically with WD-40 and buffing gently with a soft cloth. To give the old “soft shoo” to squeaky shoes, spray some WD-40 at the spot where the sole and heel join and the squeaks will cease.
Separate stuck glassware
What can you do when you reach for a drinking glass and get two locked together, one stuck tightly inside the other? You don’t want to risk breaking one or both by trying to pull them apart. Stuck glasses will separate with ease if you squirt some WD-40 on them, wait a few seconds for it to work its way between the glasses, and then gently pull the glasses apart. Remember to wash the glasses thoroughly before you use them.

[Editors Note: We put the rest of this almost 30 uses on the blog and you can see them by clicking here.]

Regards ,
H.

What's with the X?

We are optimistic about our future. We believe Detroit's best days lie ahead. We are the people who are making it happen. We believe that is an idea worth spreading.

Why in Detroit?

Because we love Detroit. And we're not alone. Innovation, artistic expression and entrepreneurship in Detroit are on the rise. How Duggan, Gilmour and Schlichting are Remaking Detroit's Midtown

Urban living is making a comeback in the center of Detroit.

The revitalization and growth of Detroit's Midtown neighborhood has been a success story in a city that, overall, is shrinking and facing huge challenges. . Beer, bread and baklava: Where to experience the real Midtown "scene."
. How the Live Midtown program, which provides cash incentives to employees who move to Detroit, came about.
. A chance to meet the three dynamic leaders involved and hear their insider perspectives on what's worked with the Live Midtown campaign what hasn't, and what's next.
. The prospects for applying lessons learned in Midtown to other parts of the city and/or the region.
Special Feature: Also included in this program will be a special PechaKucha 20x20 about the revival of Midtown narrated by Rochelle Riley. Don't know what a PechaKucha is? Come find out!
