The Scaling Habits of ASP.NET Applications
Business and Professional Event

WED 2011-09-21
As our ASP.NET web applications become more and more successful we switch our focus from adding feature to performance, scale and management. Richard has been in the lab studying the scaling habits of the average domestic ASP.NET solution and has emerged to discuss his findings (no applications were actually harmed during the capture of this data). Come and learn where ASP.NET stumbles and how to get it back on its feet. In this session you will learn about the web acceleration equation, identify common ASP.NET bottlenecks, explore solution alternatives, uncover the secret sauce and determine a reasonable strategy for scaling ASP.NET applications. Speaker: Richard Campbell Richard Campbell has been involved with microcomputers and software since 1977. His career has spanned the industry both on the hardware and software sides, from manufacturing to sales, service, game development, line-of-business software and large scale systems. He's been deeply involved in creating new businesses around software, hardware, services and products in a huge range of roles, including technical, management and financing. During the halcyon days of the DotComBoom he was a consultant to venture capital firms providing technical due diligence and architectural direction. Today Richard is on the board of directors for Telerik (www.telerik.com), a leading vendor of development, team productivity, automated testing tools, UI components and content management solutions in the Microsoft space. He is one of the co-founders of Strangeloop Networks (www.strangeloopnetworks.com), developing an appliance for web site performance. He's a partner in PWOP Productions, creating a variety of multimedia programs including ".NET Rocks!, the Internet Audio Talk Show for .NET Developers," (www.dotnetrocks.com) a podcast produced twice a week for more than 150,000 listeners in 120 countries. In addition he's the host of RunAs Radio (www.runasradio.com), a podcast for the IT Professional using Microsoft technologies. Richard also serves as a technical director for Penton Media, planning the content of magazines and conferences that engage technology professionals all over the world. TED isn't a who, it's a what. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, three broad subject areas that are shaping our future. TEDxDetroit is an independently produced offspring of the annual TED gathering of big brains and cool creators. Learn more about the TED conference at TED.com

What's with the X?

We are the X. The multipliers. The catalysts. The connectors. The amplifiers. We challenge the status quo. We come together to collaborate, to share fresh ideas and to find inspiration. We are optimistic about our future. We believe Detroit's best days lie ahead. We are the people who are making it happen. We believe that is an idea worth spreading.

Why in Detroit?

Because we love Detroit. And we're not alone. Innovation, artistic expression and entrepreneurship in Detroit are on the rise. How Duggan, Gilmour and Schlichting are Remaking Detroit's Midtown

Urban living is making a comeback in the center of Detroit.

The revitalization and growth of Detroit's Midtown neighborhood has been a success story in a city that, overall, is shrinking and facing huge challenges. Private-sector investment by Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Health System, along with the commitment of Wayne State University, have made a big difference in making that community an attractive place to live, work and spend time.

This event, will include:
. Lofts, new construction and more: Why living in Midtown is attractive.
. Beer, bread and baklava: Where to experience the real Midtown "scene."
. How the Live Midtown program, which provides cash incentives to employees who move to Detroit, came about.
. A chance to meet the three dynamic leaders involved and hear their insider perspectives on what's worked with the Live Midtown campaign what hasn't, and what's next.
. The prospects for applying lessons learned in Midtown to other parts of the city and/or the region.
Special Feature: Also included in this program will be a special PechaKucha 20x20 about the revival of Midtown narrated by Rochelle Riley. Don't know what a PechaKucha is? Come find out!

Speakers:
. Michael E. Duggan, president and CEO, Detroit Medical Center
. Allan D. Gilmour, president, Wayne State University
. Nancy M. Schlichting, chief executive officer, Henry Ford Health System
Moderator:
. Rochelle Riley, columnist, Detroit Free Press
