This Week's Now "Famous Person"

George George is now famous because he is appearing in the "Got Mustard Campaign" .George has been selling plants and herbs for years out of the Royal Oak and Birmingham farmers markets. If you see him be sure to tell him you've seen him in the "Got Mustard" campaign. You can see the other 500 plus people by clicking on the underlined words above.

There are over 513 people who have volunteered to participate and we have found it necessary to change the way the slide show runs so that people can browse rather than wait to see their photo with the "digital mustard" on their upper lip. One can replace the phrase in the section box with their first name and then only the slides that contain that name are displayed. If you had your photo taken and can't find it in the slide show please send us an email. If you would like to send a photo to be included, send it to webmaster@peggyjostudio.net. We will supply the "digital mustard".

Congratulations George

For Your Safety Check The True Age of Your Tires

I always wondered why I'd see tire treads on the roadside.

In a television documentary aired on ABC on July 24, 2008 it was revealed that there are no regulations in the United States regarding the sale of tires manufactured more than six years ago. In Britain they do have that law.

Older tires can lose their tread when they dry out. If they sit on shelf for any great amount of time they do dry out. You can see when your tires were built by finding the date code stamped on each tire. They are on the outside of the tire but are not visible when the tire is mounted unless you crawl under the car or have it hoisted on a lift. The code specifies the week and the year manufactured. So 249 whould mean the 24th week of 1999; 2402 (as shown in the photo would mean the 24th week of 2002.

The televison documentary is at http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897

Help our Children

One of our readers, Lois sent this plea to support bill #1738 Which is being considerd by the Congress. It is a bill to supply more money to the police to rescue our children from predators.

DO YOU USE YOUR TURN SIGNAL WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING?

I asked several people I know if they'd be interested In writing something for the newsletter--one person
came up with the need to use turn signals. I thought alerting us to using our car turn signals was important,
but the way it was written I decided to omit the writer's name.

The seat belt thing and the turn signal thing seem very different to  me. My feeling is that people who don't
wear their seat belts are just being rebellious, while people who don't use turn signals are just not thinking about it.---there hasn't been the same kind of campaign for turn signals as seat belts-- I thought it interesting that the writer equated not using the turn signal with not washing one's  hands after using the rest room (a real bugaboo of mine)-- I hate seeing women & children walking out of the restroom without washing their hands--especially when they are classy, elegantly dressed--(well, that's beside the point) Anyway, now I have something
else to say besides,"excuse me I'll get out of your way so you can wash your hands" --I'll ask them if they
use their turn signal. I'll let you all know what I find out--readers, let me know what you find out, too.
  Peggy Jo

As a result the following is from one our our readers:

So, why do you think people don't use their turn signals? Do you think, maybe, it's the same reason people don't use seatbelts? That's probably not the case. After all, most people have gotten the idea that they will be safer if they wear a seatbelt. They may believe that the odds against them getting hurt without one outweighs the inconvenience of putting one on, but everybody, I'm sure, sees it as a personal safety issue.

Not using a turn signal, however, is merely a manifestation of disinterest in anyone else's welfare. Clearly, the driver knows he/she is going to turn or change lanes some period of time before he/she actually does it. The poor, anti-social drivers who don't use their signals just don't care if their 4,000 pound carriages suddenly drift into someone else's space without warning. They probably got poor toilet training from their parents, too. (Someone should do a study comparing not washing hands after using the toilet and not using turn signals after deciding to turn or change lanes.)

Maybe, if not using turn signals was seen as the purely selfish act it really is, more moral force could be brought to bear on those who self-centeredly practice it. I find the middle finger of the left hand is an appropriate symbol.
