KIM KOMANDO ON TECHNOLOGY

Q: I’ve disabled Java on my computer because of its recent security problems, but my browser still wants me to use Javascript. How can I turn that off?
A: I can see why you would confuse the two, but Javascript and Java are two different platforms. A program that’s written to use Javascript won’t run on Java and vice versa. Both programs have very different security structures, so the security issues that Java is dealing with aren’t affecting Javascript. Because Javascript is built into most browsers, you’d disable it from your browser’s settings menu. However, there’s not really a reason to do that. If you did, many newer websites would not work. I do recommend uninstalling Java in your browser until Oracle releases a secure version, though.

One-legged soccer star scores most amazing, inspirational goal you’ll ever see

By Cameron Smith | Prep Rally – Fri, Sep 21, 2012 6:01 AM EDT

Email

Let's not beat around the bush: What Nicolai "Nico" Calabria pulled off Wednesday in Massachusetts has to be one of the greatest goals ever scored. That's not because of the arc of his shot or the power of his header. It's because Nico Calabria only has one leg, and he scored one of the most acrobatic goals of the season in an able-bodied, varsity soccer game.

Calabria is a high school senior who competes for the Concord-Carlisle (Mass.) High soccer team. He was the captain of the junior varsity squad as a junior. He is also a wrestler for the Patriots. He does all these things with just one leg, which is about as remarkable an achievement as one can come across.

On the soccer pitch, Calabria motors up and down the field on crutches. Incredibly, they don't seem to keep him out of the action much, either, because Calabria can really move on his two crutches, as he showed with his celebration after his recent goal during C-C's 9-0 victory against Newton (Mass.) South High.

Massachusetts teen Nico Calabria, who is a one-legged soccer star — TeamUSAAmpSoccer.comMassachusetts teen Nico Calabria, who is a one-legged soccer star — TeamUSAAmpSoccer.com

How he managed to score that goal, however, is more remarkable still. Balancing on his crutches, Calabria positioned himself in the penalty box for an oncoming Concord-Carlisle corner. As the ball floated in, Calabria was in position to get his boot on the ball, if he could get it high enough to make contact.

What followed next was incredible, with Calabria swinging his leg as if he was attempting an overhead volley. He made contact with the inswinging corner with his leg over his head like a full scissor kick, and the ball sailed into the net with ease.

Even if you've already watched the goal above once, go back and check it out again. It's well worth it. It would easily qualify as one of the top goals of the week if Calabria had taken the shot with both of his lower limbs, let alone scoring it with one.

That Calabria has even made it to the Concord-Carlisle varsity soccer team is a major accomplishment. The Patriots are among the strongest teams in the Dual County League (DCL) each year, and the DCL hosts some of the best boys soccer in the Boston area. Suffice it to say, Concord-Carlisle doesn't need Calabria on the field just to make up the numbers. He's there on his own merit.

Though he is still in high school, Calabria is already a member of the U.S. national amputee soccer team. His bio on that team's website claims that he has been a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show and has been profiled on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered."

Based on what he accomplishes on the field, Calabria deserves all that attention and more. Yet his accomplishments aren't limited to soccer and wrestling, either; Calabria also summited Mt. Kilamanjaro, reaching the top of the mountain at age 13.

That expedition may have set the stage for Calabria's future triumphs, but it certainly didn't stop him. Now the high school senior can comfortably look back and realize that he's succeeding in things that some able-bodied athletes could only dream about.

Bluegrass Bird

This is sooo cool..watch this bird unexpectedly light on the guitar and stays as long as the guy sings! THIS IS AMAZING!!!! This one is good, watch the reaction of the guitarist--- This is fun to watch. About half way through in this song a little wild bird lands on the lead singer's guitar and watches the singer. The singer is then able to pet the wild bird. Put it on "full screen". It will be better to see the bird. The bird really looks straight at the singer.

A Tale of Three Lightning Talks
Business and Professional Event

THU 2012-09-27
Join the Detroit Google Developers Group (GDG) for an evening of three fine lightning talks (hence the title). Each speaker will get 15-20 minutes to present and at the end of the evening we will have a question and answer period.

The order of the presentations will be:
Lightning Talk No. 1

Mat Stollman will present on Behavior Driven Development (BDD) and testing Mobile Applications using the BDD style. In particular he will cover UI testing of mobile applications. There are many tools out there currently to UI test mobile applications and Mat has experimented with many of them. He will cover how he recently started using a testing tool called Cucumber to run automated acceptance tests on Android and iOS devices.

About Mat Stollman
Mat Stollman is a mobile software quality assurance analyst for Quicken Loans. He helps build Quicken Loans mobile testing infrostructure using and testing it out with various open source frameworks. He also likes cats.

Lightning Talk No. 2

Build a Gateway with Google OpenID APIs

Google offers many services and some of these (like Google Apps) are federated; that is, a user can use a non-Google account to log into Google Apps. On the flip side, can a Google account be used to log into non-Google services? The answer is yes, since Google is an OpenID identity provider.

This lightning talk describes how to federate Google identities with non-Google services. In particular, we will demo a prototype that gateways Google identity (based on OpenID 2.0) into the InCommon Federation (a SAML federation of higher ed institutions).

About Tom Scavo

Tom is a long-time developer, teacher, and general technologist (you know the type). An enterprise SAML technologist by trade, Tom is finally coming to appreciate the utility of lightweight APIs and the security technologies springing up around them.

Tom lives and works in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is Operations Manager for the InCommon Federation (incommon.org), a trust federation of higher education institutions in the US. He loves to write, cycle, and enjoys films of all kinds.

Lightning Talk No. 3

Accessing Google API's with OAuth 2.0 Google has a wealth of information hidden behind its API's. Much of it requires user authentication, OAuth 2.0 is Google's preferred mechanism for authenticating users. This talk will focus on what OAuth 2 is, how it works, registering an app on the Google API console, Google's libraries for performing OAuth 2 authentication, and some examples of working with Google API's. About Dave Turner Dave Turner loves to code, and has been doing it in some form since 1999. He is experienced in many areas of software design and development including; database, web, desktop, automation processing and mobile devices.
