Kevin Smith Partners with EmpowerMind for Pepsi Refresh Challenge to Support Detroit Public School Student Athletes

EmpowerMind and Kevin Smith battle for Pepsi Refresh Grant to help Detroit Student Athletes. The Pepsi Refresh Challenge kicked of at 6am Septembr 1, 2010 and will run the entire month of September. During this time Kevin Smith of the Detroit Lions is requesting the voting support of Detroit and surrounding areas to put Michigan on the map for the wonderful local initiatives of EmpowerMind to win the $250,000 grant through Pepsi Refresh to help Detroit Public School Student Athletes improve their grades and study habits.

EmpowerMind is the brainchild of Detroiter, Kimberly Kassner,"It is evident that kids in the athletic programs throughout the city have great athletic ability and talent however; the missing component is the commitment and the grades in the classroom to take them to the next level." EmpowerMind was developed for just that, to provide the needed coaching to our athletes in the classroom to keep their star potential for grades as well. With the support of Kevin Smith, a very successful professional athlete that played football from a young age to high school, into college and now for our own Detroit Lions, we are able to show and encourage Detroit's youth to take their commitment they have on the playing field into the classroom.

"I am very happy to help and support this effort. It's important for kids to know that they have to do good in the classroom, off the field in order to take their talents to the next level and having EmpowerMind come in and help these athletes will be great for them."

Throughout the month of September, EmpowerMind and their volunteer team will be canvassing the city of Detroit and surrounding areas to promote the Pepsi Challenge project for the EmpowerMind program. Along with the support and partnership of Fathead, the Detroit Public School, city officials, local companies and sponsors we are hoping to pull the city together to help vote!

To VOTE visit www.refresheverything.com/empowermind daily and please vote once a day along with texting 102690 to PEPSI (73774). Each individual can vote once daily online as well as through their mobile phone via text. Please help support Detroit Public Schools to win!

EmpowerMind helps all types of students from struggling students to honor students cut study time in half, and improve overall test scores and grades. It's accomplished by helping them discover HOW they learn best by capitalizing on their strengths. Once they learn this, they can take information they are being taught in schools and convert it into their unique learning style to accelerate learning with better results and greater confidence.

Emails from our readers

Dear Peggy Jo,

Sorry to inform you that during set-up for the Birmingham Art Fair, the high winds ripped my entire unit away from me while I was hanging on screaming for help. The booth was anchored to a parking meter as well as had 200 lbs. of weight in addition to me, but it was no match for mother nature. At least half of my heavy iron tent forms were bent in half and some completely broke away from their welds rendering my entire unit unsalvagable. My heavy vinyl tent was also ripped and the zippers torn apart as the wind carried me and the tent down the street. Several people tried to help, but even my 50 lb. weights were blown and rolled a half a block away while many other parts blew all over the place. I'm not even sure I have all the parts. Needless to say, I will not be in the show this weekend.

Dear Peggy Jo,
Would you please put a very nice ad in for him? He is WONDERFUL! Also I will attach a write-up about him on petfinder.com.Thor
He does need a loving home, preferrably as the only animal and no cats. He's had a rough start in life and deserves a home with the love and understanding which he gives back boundlessly. He plays like a puppy with a tennis ball and is house broken and trained to walk on a leash quite well.
The name the rescue organization gave him is Thor - but he now answers to just the name "Boy".
Thanks, Peggy Jo,
Love,
Sharon

Crocker House Museum The first mayor of Mount Clemens, Joshua Dickinson, built this Italianate house in 1869. His daughter Katherine, the great-granddaughter of city founder Christian Clemens, and his son-in-law, George M. Crocker moved into the house after their marriage in 1870. Crocker, a former prosecuting attorney and justice of the peace, became mayor upon Dickinson's death. Mount Clemens was known as the great health and pleasure resort of Michigan. People from all over the world and from all walks of life came to Mount Clemens for the healing powers of mineral baths. A visit will take you back in time to when the Crocker family lived in the home and also offer a glimpse into Mount Clemens' famous Mineral Bath era. Many art pieces are also on display by local artist Franklin Harold Hayward. The museum is open March through December, Tuesday thru Thursday 10 am - 4 pm and the first Sunday of each month 1 - 4 pm, excluding holidays. The Crocker House Museum also offers many special and educational programs including a Cemetery Walk, Garden Walk, Garden and Christmas Teas, Etiquette Classes, and historical lectures.
