Sukkot

Speak to the people of Israel, saying: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month, and lasting seven days, there shall be the festival of booths to the Lord.  - Leviticus 23:34 (NSRV)

The Festival of Sukkot begins on Tishri 15, the fifth day after Yom Kippur. It is quite a drastic transition, from one of the most solemn holidays in our year to one of the most joyous. Sukkot is so unreservedly joyful that it is commonly referred to in Jewish prayer and literature as Z'man Simchateinu , the Season of our Rejoicing.

Sukkot is the last of the Shalosh R'galim (three pilgrimage festivals). Like Passover and Shavu'ot, Sukkot has a dual significance: historical and agricultural. Historically, Sukkot commemorates the forty-year period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the desert, living in temporary shelters. Agriculturally, Sukkot is a harvest festival and is sometimes referred to as Chag Ha-Asif , the Festival of Ingathering.
  Significance:
Remembers the wandering in the dessert; also a harvest festival.
Observances:
Building and "dwelling" in a booth; waving 3 branches and a fruit
(the Four Species) during services.
Length: 7 days.

(In honor of the holiday's historical significance, we are commanded to dwell in temporary shelters, as our ancestors did in the wilderness. The temporary shelter is referred to as a sukkah (which is the singular form of the plural word "sukkot"). Like the word sukkot, it can be pronounced like Sue-KAH, or to rhyme with Book-a.)

This Week's Now Famous Person

Beverly PhotoAva from Port Huron is now famous for appearing in the "Got Mustard Campaign"

She is also famous for driving down to the Detroit area dances. She misses the dances sponsored by Phil but does like to attend dance parties on the East Side. She says Port Huron does not have that many singles events and she appreciates the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter to keep her informed.

So when you see or contact Ava be sure to tell her you saw her in the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter. You can see the other hundreds of people by clicking on the underlined words above.

You can browse rather than wait to see a particular photo with the "digital mustard" on the upper lip. Just replace the phrase in the section box with a first name and delete any other text in the box. Then only the slides that contain that name are displayed.

If you had your photo taken and can't find it in the slide show please send us an email. If you would like to send a photo to be included, send it to webmaster@peggyjostudio.net. We will supply the "digital mustard".

Congratulations Ava!!

Emails from Our readers

Dear Peggy Jo,
I was able to rescue Billy, a domestic black and white medium hair cat. He is very sweet and affectionate. He is currently at the vet because his large wound is infected and the skin is dying. The wound covers his left side. I do expect him to recover. I am still looking for a wonderful home for him when he is well as he deserves the very best after what he has been through. Please let me know if you know someone interested in having this special little kitty

. Thanks for your help,
Patty- 248-540-0991 .
