Bora Gulari, of Detroit's Bayview Yacht Club, Wins 2013 International Moth Class Title in Hawaii

Bora Gulari These sailboats reach a speed of more than 30 MPH.

International Moth Class History

The current International moth is a result of merging two separate but similar historical developments. The first occurred in Australia in 1928 when Len Morris built a cat rigged (single sail) flat bottomed scow to sail on Andersons' Inlet at Inverloch, a seaside resort, 130km from Melbourne. She was hard chined, was eleven foot long, and carried 80 sq ft in single mainsail. The craft was named "Olive" after his wife. The construction was timber with an internal construction somewhat like Hargreave's box kite. "Olive's" performance was so outstanding, that a similar boat "Whoopee" was built. Len Morris then sold "Olive", and built another boat called "Flutterby", and with those three boats, the Inverloch Yacht Club was formed. Restrictions for the class known as the Inverloch Eleven Footer class were then drawn up, with the distinguishing characteristic that of being not a one-design boat but rather that of a boat permitting development within the set of design parameters. At much the same time, 1929 in fact, halfway around the world another development class, the American Moth Boat was started by Captain Van Sant of Atlantic City, New Jersey with his boat "Jumping Juniper" built of Atlantic White Cedar from the Great Dismal Swamp. The US development class was formally organized in 1932 as the "National Moth Boat Association" and in 1935, due to increasing overseas interest, changed its name to the "International Moth Class Association" or IMCA.

According to Huffington Post and other sources, Charley was fired for telling patrons that they should only put mustard on their hotdogs. Here is Dirty Harry's (Clint Eastwood) opinion.

Parker & Thomas Duo: 17th Annual Edgefest Fringe Concert
Ann Arbor Ski Club

TUE 2013-10-22

Improvisational jazz by this duo of acclaimed avant jazz bassist William Parker and Ypsilanti pianist Kenn Thomas. This is a Free opening act of the week long festival. If you want more information on the Edgefest week's events. http://www.kerrytownconcerthouse.com/index.php/events/edgefest Diane Gledhill is the host for this event 734-368-5237 or diane82103@yahoo.com.

William Parker is a master musician, improviser, and composer. He plays the bass, shakuhachi, double reeds, tuba, donso ngoni and gembri. He was born in 1952 in the Bronx, New York. He studied bass with Richard Davis, Art Davis, Milt Hinton, Wilber Ware, and Jimmy Garrison. He entered the music scene in 1971 playing at Studio We, Studio Rivbea, Hilly's on The Bowery and The Baby Grand, playing with many musicians on the avant-garde school Bill Dixon, Sunny Murray, Charles Tyler, Billy Higgins, Charles Brackeem, Alan Silva, Frank Wright, Frank Lowe, Rashid Ali, Donald Ayler, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, Milford Graves and with traditionalists like Walter Bishop, Sr. and Maxine Sullivan. Early projects with dancer and choreographer Patricia Nicholson created a huge repertoire of composed music for multiple ensembles ranging from solo works to big band projects. Parker played in the Cecil Taylor unit from 1980 through 1991. He also developed a strong relationship with the European Improvised Music scene playing with musicians such as Peter Kowald, Peter Brotzmann, Han Bennink, Tony Oxley, Derek Bailey, Louis Sclavis, and Louis Moholo. He began recording in 1994 and leading his own bands on a regular basis founding two ensembles, In Order To Survive, and The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra. In 2001, Parker released O'Neal's Porch, which marked a turn toward a more universal sound working with drummer Hamid Drake. The Raining on the Moon Quintet followed, adding vocalist Leena Conquest and the Quartet from O'Neal's Porch. Most notable among many recent projects is the Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield. He has taught at Bennington College, NYU, The New England Conservatory of Music, Cal Arts, New School University and Rotterdam Conservatory of Music. He has also taught music workshops throughout the world including Paris, Berlin and Tokyo and the Lower East Side. Parker is also a theorist and author of several books including the Sound Journal, Document Humanum, Music and the Shadow People and The Mayor of Punkville.

Kenn Thomas is a pianist and synthesizer player who lives in Ypsilanti, and just happens to be Oluyemi's brother. He performs widely in different contexts in our area, and was featured at last year's Edgefest. He can be heard in a quartet setting together with his brother on Nigeria, released by the Polish label Not Two.

THU. Oct. 24 Events

United Nations United Nations Day isn't solely an American holiday but a holiday celebrating all of the peoples that came together to form the United Nations. It was the United Nations General Assembly that established the holiday in 1948. The date set for the holiday is October 24th, the same day that the United Nations Charter was adopted in 1945.
United Nations Day is just one of the events that take place during United Nations Week which runs every year from October 20-24th. United Nations Day isn't just a holiday to celebrate the beginning of the organization. Its purpose is more to uphold what the United Nations stands for; international economical development, security, social progress, human rights and world peace. Though none of the dozens of UN member states are required to recognize the holiday, the General Assembly did request it in 1971. Since 1946, even before its official inception, every year the U.S. President has proclaimed a United Nations Day. There are also various learning institutions and international schools across the world that recognize and celebrate United Nations Day as a day to show pride in their cultural diversity.

Proof
Stagecrafters

This event spans the period from 2013-10-18 to 2013-10-27

Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony® Award for Best Play! Catherine, an emotionally fragile young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. After his death, she struggles with guilt, relationships, and the fear of inheriting her father's mental degeneration. The story climaxes with the discovery of a valuable notebook in her father's desk. Despite the heavy subject matter, Proof is the perfect blend of drama, wit and mystery.

Located in the former balcony of the Baldwin Theatre, 2nd Stage is Stagecrafters' Contemporary Theatre. With its 100-seat intimate setting, the 2nd Stage is a black box theatre with a simple, unadorned performance space, and a versatile and easy-to-change stage. The audience sits in close proximity to the stage which lends itself to the types of shows mounted. The focus is on the story, writing, and performances rather than technical elements of the show.

2nd Stage's 2013-14 season includes Proof, The Fantasticks and [title of show] - click for a snapshot of the entire 2nd Stage season. Join us as we continue our uncompromising dedication to creating an enriching, quality theatrical experience for the community. Season tickets are available - visit the Season Tickets page in our Box Office for more information.

This 25th season of Stagecrafters' 2nd Stage is dedicated to the memory of our dear friend Barbara Clarke (3/29/35-11/11/12) in appreciation for her service and dedication to the 2nd Stage.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Ann Arbor Ski Club

FRI 2013-10-25

Since The Rocky Horror Picture Show got rained out at Top of the Park and I have never experienced the live in the theater antics that have made this a cult classic, join me for a Time Warp night. Don't forget to bring the props - rice, toilet paper, newspaper, noise makers, etc. For a full list you can refer to http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/proplist.php Diane Gledhill is the host for this event 734-368-5237 or diane82103@yahoo.com.

Midnights are only $7!

This low-budget freak show/cult classic/cultural institution concerns the misadventures of Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) inside a strange mansion that they come across on a rainy night. After the wholesome pair profess their love through an opening song, their car breaks down in the woods, and they seek refuge in a towering castle nearby. Greeting them at the door is a ghoulish butler named Riff Raff (Richard O'Brien), who introduces them to a bacchanaliancollection of partygoers dressed in outfits from some sort of interplanetary thrift shop. The host of this gathering is a transvestite clad in lingerie, Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry), a mad scientist who claims to be from another planet. With assistants Columbia (Nell Campbell) and Magenta (Patricia Quinn) looking on, Frank unveils his latest creation - a figure wrapped in gauze and submerged in a tank full of liquid. With the addition of colored dyes and some assistance from the weather, Frank brings to life a blonde young beefcake wearing nothing but skimpy shorts, who launches into song in his first minute of life. Just when Brad and Janet think things couldn't get any stranger, a biker (Meat Loaf) bursts onto the scene to reclaim Columbia, his ex-girlfriend. When Frank kills the biker, it's clear that Brad and Janet will be guests for the night, and that they may be next on Frank's list - whether for murder or carnal delights is uncertain. And just what is that mystery meat they're eating for dinner, anyway? In addition to playing Riff Raff, O'Brien wrote the catchy songs, with John Barry and Richard Hartley composing the score. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi 1975. 100 minutes. Rated R.

Fall Color Hikes
Catholic Alumni Club

SUN 2013-10-27
FALL COLOR HIKES

You can't miss the peak of the leaves changing colors if you make a point of going out on a one to two hour hike - every week! Please, able-bodied individuals only, since we will travel "over hill and dale" in search of the perfect view! (Those who want to attend for the cider, donuts, and fellow- ship but won't be hiking can meet us at the rendezvous location either before or after the activity.) Each Sunday will be a different location, and at a different time. Bring a comfortable pair of sneakers, water and snacks, clothing for cold or rainy weather, a camera, compass / GPS, and money for the cider mill or buying dinner if the group wants to go out afterward. A staff or a pair of hiking poles is recommended but optional. Backpackers are welcome to use these trips to practice gearing up. Maps will be distributed upon arrival. There are no parking fees and most of the time no park entry fees. Your only cost will be how much cider and donuts you purchase! RSVP to: Our host by the Saturday before each hike. See each hike described in detail under Activities for October for each date.
