From the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter

We have noticed that every once in a while, many people complain that they do not get their newsletter which we send out every Monday morning. The various internet carriers are lobbying for the right to offer premium services for an additional cost which seems reasonable on the surface but that would mean that our newsletter would have to wait to be delivered after all the big spenders had their stuff distributed. Net Neutrality is a concept that has been the foundation of the internet and it means all users are treated the same no matter what they pay for their service.

The email providers are deciding for us what emails should be delivered and when. They are not informing you of their actions. What they want to do is charge for sending email. Right now it does not cost us anything to send an email. If the providers get their way, we would have to pay a fee to guarantee that it would be delivered. You already pay a fee for receiving the email which is buried in your monthly charges. The articles below will explain more, but it seems many comcast addresses have had difficulty getting our newsletter on a regular timely basis.

Senators want probe of Comcast content blocking

Two Senators on Friday(10/26/2007) called for a congressional hearing to investigate reports that phone and cable companies are unfairly stifling communications over the Internet and on cell phones. Sens. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, said the incidents involving several companies, including Comcast Corp., Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc., have raised serious concerns over the companies' "power to discriminate against content." They want the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee to investigate whether such incidents were based on legitimate business policies or unfair and anticompetitive practices and if more federal regulation is needed

From freepress.net

Comcast has given us a glimpse of a world without Net Neutrality, and it's a chilling sight. An investigation by the Associated Press caught the cable giant secretly inspecting online communications and crippling users' ability to share information with one another. This is a gross violation of Net Neutrality -- the longstanding principle that ensures a free and open Internet. More about net neutrality here

Emails from our readers.

Dear Peggy Jo,

Is Sailing Singles still having events other than their meetings? I'm not seeing any thing in your newsletter lately and I really like the people and was thinking of joining.

G.S.

Dear G.S.

Yes they are still having monthly happy hours and dinners of the month and they will be covered in future issues.

Peggy Jo .

Dear Peggy Jo,

What happened to the colorful UML add. I have been meaning to ask what UML was about.

G.R.

Dear G.R.

UML stands for Universal Modeling Language which is touted to be the future of software development. IBM and Sun have embraced the standard. Compuware's Optimal J is based on the standard and Microsoft recently announced that they were embracing the concept but have not indicated that they would comply with the UML standards. The purchaser of the add did not receive enough response to continue the add.

Peggy Jo.
