Emails from our readers

Dear Peggy Jo,
Please let the former members of Kirk Singles know about a special memorial service to honor Dr. Patricia Hollencamp who passed away. It will be on Saturday November 23 at 2 p.m.

After the sevice there will be a Memorial Tea including light refreshments in Heritage Hall

Pat's family had their service for her in Kingsport, TN last week. This is where she & Tom grew up & where she still has family. This Kirk in the Hills service is being hosted by Michigan friends who felt like she was family. Fortunately we found a date that both Dawn Kurc, Pat's daughter, & Tom Duckwall, her fiancee, will be able to attend & be our honored guests. We know you'd all like to share your condolences with them.

Dawn & Gary Kurc - 9051 Killochan Court, Dublin, OH 43017 Tom Duckwall - 5 Holly Crest Ct., Greensboro NC 27410-9124

We look forward to seeing you there in remembrance & to pay tribute to our friend Pat.

Sincerely,
Deb Lawson, Becky Gepner & Marty Wunsch

Context-Aware Computing
Business and Professional Event

MON 2013-11-11

What do these scenarios have in common?

  • While you are out shopping for a sweater, you receive a coupon on your mobile device for 30% off one particular sweater brand sold in the store you're shopping in
  • Inclement morning weather will cause delays in travel, so your alarm automatically wakes you earlier than your normally scheduled time
  • A doctor walks into a patient's room and the patient's records are automatically pulled up on the doctor's tablet device
These are all examples of context-aware computing. Research firm, Gartner, defines context-aware computing as a style of computing in which situational and environmental information about people, places and things are used to anticipate immediate needs and pro-actively offer enriched, situation-aware and usable content, functions and experiences.

The advent of social networks, the pervasiveness of mobile-computing technologies, and a myriad of other technologies are coming together to offer capabilities and services that can greatly improve our personal and professional lives.

The Annual Black Tie Awards Night is the Major Fundraiser for the Detroit Repertory Theatre and one of the most important nights of the Year for the Theatre. The Detroit Repertory Theatre's artistic commitment and accomplishments help keep Detroit's rebirth active and alive. The Black Tie Gala brings together past Detroit Repertory Theatre artists and actors and civic minded Citizens who value the Detroit Rep's contributions to the cultural life of Metropolitan Detroit in an effort to bring hope to the community, vitality to the city and a promise of a future for the City of Detroit and the Detroit Repertory Theatre.

Individual tickets are $75 per person and include: a champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception followed by a Ceremony hosted by Mistress of Ceremonies, noted TV Host and Author, Amyre Makupson. Keynote Speaker Rochelle Riley of the Detroit Free Press will speak about the importance of the arts and the legacy of the Detroit Repertory Theatre followed by the annual presentation of the Subscriber Awards given to the Best Artists of the 2012/13 Season as voted by the Theatre's Subscribers. The evening will feature a presentation of the first play of the Rep's 57th Season, the Comedy about Seniors disobeying in an assisted living facility, A FACILITY FOR LIVING. The night winds down with a Champagne and Dessert Afterglow in the Lobby Gallery with the Detroit Rep's Artists of the past, present and future.

More information may be found on the Rep website: www.detroitreptheatre.com

About the Keynote Speaker

Rochelle RileyROCHELLE RILEY's commentary on social, political and cultural issues appears in the Detroit Free Press two to four times each week. She makes frequent television and radio appearances on National Public Radio and WDIV-TV 4's "Flashpoint." Rochelle writes passionately about public education, pop culture and local government. But no subject is off limits. At the Free Press, she has waged a 12-year campaign to improve adult literacy, recruiting thousands of volunteers and tens of thousands of dollars to the cause. Rochelle has worked at The Dallas Morning News, The Washington Post and the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., where her 1996 debut column, which called for a museum honoring Louisville native Muhammad Ali, helped spur an $80 million campaign to build the Muhammad Ali Center, which opened in 2005. Rochelle has won many state and national honors. She is the author of three collections - "From the Heart," "Life Lessons" and "Raising A Parent: Lessons My Daughter Taught Me While We Grew Up Together." She has just completed her first novel. About the play A FACILITY FOR LIVING

Set in the not so distant future, the play centers around seniors trying to live a meaningful life in an assisted living facility. Nurse Claudia is a tough love practitioner who runs Federal Nursing Home #273 by the book. Resentment runs high when Joe joins the residents. Joe's acting history coupled with the help of facility aide Kevin, who wants to make 10 second cell phone movies for viewing at red lights, inspires the residents to take over and life at the facility becomes a hilarious camp of rebellion.

About the Detroit Repertory Theatre

The oldest professional (Union) non-profit theatre in the State of Michigan, the Detroit Repertory Theatre's mission is guided by the belief that the sense of community is stronger than the forces that splinter and that efforts to preserve unity deserve the same attention and support as the justly cultivated efforts to retain diversity. The implicit goal in all the theatre's efforts is to produce the best possible professional theatre while fostering cultural democratization of the arts, and fighting by example, the disturbing level of racism that still exists. www.detroitreptheatre.com

Day of Recollection
Catholic Alumni Club

SUN 2013-11-17
DAY OF RECOLLECTION The Miles Christi group of priests and brothers sponsors a FREE monthly day of recollection at Madonna University. Their theme is always seasonally relevant and spiritually profound. (Plus, the pot-luck meal is really top-notch!) Treat yourself to half a day "away" from things before the rush of the holidays temporarily takes over. The location is in the Felician Sister's Main Chapel, at 36800 Schoolcraft Rd., near the intersection of I-96 and Newburg Rd, between Newburg & Levan. (It is the really big church to the north and west of the college--enter via Chalice Dr.) Parking is difficult--expect to walk a ways unless you arrive early. Drop off a cold dish of your own fixing down- stairs, then go upstairs for the talks. Confessions are available; there will be a Rosary before Mass; and the Mass will be at 3:30 PM. For event info, please contact Miles Christi at (248) 596- 9677 but they don't need an RSVP. For club info and to let us know to look for you, contact our host. 810-499-4831 OR yes- marklapointe @gmail.com
