Thanksgiving:

In the winter of 1620 The Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower to reach North America, settling at Plymouth, Massachusetts. They came for religious freedom — a desire to worship God and live according to Holy Scripture. But the country they found was bleak, with several inches of snow already on the ground. By the fall of 1621, only half of the pilgrims had survived. Thankful to be alive, they decided to give a thanksgiving feast. Thanksgiving, then, was a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to God, family and friends.

The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford, organized the first Thanksgiving feast in the year 1621 and invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians and their chief, Massasoit. They were the people who had taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.

President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with Godey's Lady's Book magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1846 and it was the result, largely of her efforts, that Abraham Lincoln issued a 'Thanksgiving Proclamation' on the third of October, 1863, and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving (whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held).

President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving as the 4th Thursday in the year 1939 (there were 5 Thursdays in November that year). He did so to make the Christmas shopping season (which started on Thanksgiving) longer and thus stimulate the depressed economy of the country. In 1941, Congress passed the current federal law and declared that from now onwards, Thanksgiving would be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

Emails from Our Readers

Dear Peggy Jo,

To The Airline passengers who want the government out of their life

This popular political slogan is being used to confuse the travel industry about passenger rights. The following procedure should protect all passengers
Protecting the rights of all passengers.
  1. Require the airlines to designate a certain restricted area in the terminal for all passengers who have passed the screening for a particular flight.
  2. Allow those passengers to vote on the acceptance of any people who have not passed through the screening system.
This will allow the people who want the goverment to protect their safety to vote on acceptance which will take it out of the government hands.
I can't imagine anyone allowing these people to fly on their flight. Perhaps the non-conforming fliers could shop around for a flight with passengers who don't want the protection.

We are allowing a fringe group to gather headlines

Most passengers object to the system but recognize it's neccessity.

" singing a song of thanksgiving and telling of all your miracles."
Psalms 26:7
